  • Today I'm comparing three different nibs: a cursive italic, a journaler's grind, and a 1.1 stub.

    Thank you so much! Newbie fountain pen addict and was looking for a comparison like this! So helpful!

    It's a small gripe (and I never shame anyone for it because I dont know their situation) but Im always surprised by videos of people dropping hundreds and thousands of dollars on fountain pens who dont seem to put in the effort or practice to improve their handwriting.
    Its just really nice to see these nibs being competently utilized to show off what they can do in the practiced hands of a skilled writer.
    I think I'm going to try my luck with a cursive italic nib. Thank you for making this.

      I'm glad you enjoyed it! I must admit, I don't practice my handwriting as much as I'd like. I just don't have the time for it currently. Most of my fountain pen use at the moment is for work notes! Which are on the sloppier side. Ha!

    This is soooo good! What a difference between the line width of the 1.1 stub and the Medium custom grinds. Now I know why I prefer a broad nib to start on a custom grind. 💚💚💚🖋

      Thank you, I'm glad you liked it! If I get custom nib work down again, I'll have to try a broad. Maybe one day, at a pen show...I can dream!

    Thank you for doing this for me! I love them all in your handwriting 😆 I can’t make a stub nib look that good in my own handwriting. I really like the CI and JG. They are nearly the same but I think if I had to choose, I would go for the JG because you say it’s a little smoother. Thanks again 🥰🥰

      @@sarakatieee Hi Sara! CI is one of the grinds I'm considering actually. There's someone here in CO where I live who does great work (Kirk Speer) so I'm going to reach out to him & see about a CI grind for one of my pens. Btw - I love the ink you used for the comparison. I'm normally a 'you can never ever have enough purple' girl 😄 but I'm currently on a green/greenish-brown ink kick (expanding my ink horizons, if you will ;) specifically, mossy, kelp, chartreuse, olive tones. In fact, I think I'll re-check out your tea-inspired inks video again! 🤔

    Gina Salorino is so aw3some!! She did the "Needlepoint flex" on my gold flex nib!
    I've since moved on to steel Stub nibs. I may see what kind of nice smooth gold stubs she can work up this winter.

      Yes, she is wonderful! I look forward to having her do another nib someday in the future. I’ve not heard of a needlepoint flex. I’ll have to look it up!

    She's done two of my cursive italic grinds, and one smooth & tune. I love her work, and I agree, I think my cursive does look better with the CI grind too. I do think I may compare it to the Nemosine .8 stub since they might be super similar.

    • @sarakatieee
      @sarakatieee  3 года назад

      Yes, you're right! It does write very similar to that one.

    Ooooo I’ve never had a nib grind done before, there is a guy local to me who offers this service and is regarded highly, and have wanted to drop a pen off there however was unsure of what to ask for! I love the look of the journalers grind! Is this something I could request or is it special to an Esterbrook pen? The other two are lovely but I think would be too ‘boxy’ for my handwriting is you get what I mean? Also, that INK 😍

    • @sarakatieee
      @sarakatieee  3 года назад

      I think the Journaler grind is special to Dromgoole's (a store in Houston, Texas), but I'm not entirely sure. You might be able to have something similar if you have a M nib ground to a cursive italic, but slightly rounded on the sides, so it's not sharp? And isn't that ink gorgeous? It was my first time using it in pens!

    How is the journal nib different than a broad?

    • @sarakatieee
      @sarakatieee  2 года назад

      The journaler’s nib is like a medium stub, while a broad nib is still larger, with that more rounded line.
