- Watch again as new MPs are sworn into the House of Commons on Tuesday 9 July, following the general election.
There will be 411 MPs representing Labour thanks to their landslide win, while the Conservatives form the opposition with 121 seats.
The Liberal Democrats take 72 seats in the Commons, with the SNP on nine, Reform UK on five and the Green Party on four.
Once sworn in, Labour’s Diane Abbott will earn the symbolic title Mother of the House.
The moniker is given to the female MP with the longest continuous service.
Ms Abbott, 70, was first elected in June 1987 - becoming the first black woman elected to the House of Commons.
Some believed that her ally, Jeremy Corbyn, would become Father of the House.
But Sir Edward Leigh, 73, Conservative MP for Gainsborough, pipped him to the title, as he was sworn in moments before Mr Corbyn after the June 1983 election.
Elsewhere, the youngest MP is believed to be Sam Carling, 22, the new Labour MP for North West Cambridgeshire.
He narrowly won the seat, with Conservative candidate Shailesh Vara just 39 votes behind.

Despite this horribly negative comment section, seeing Starmer and Sunak walking, talking and laughing together is uplifting
Anyone fancy time stamping it so I can find my MP?
Who is your MP?
That was trippy when they all went quiet for no reason...then slowly started talking again
1st day in class you all behave or pretend to be good.We give them 6 months, bfre some true colours start showing.😂😂😅.Either way may they ALL be guided by GOD in their Leadership AMEN.
Lets hope they all show up like today when it comes to voting laws that affect us!
@isag.7468 voting and speeches I the house is a small part of the job - there is also a lot of networking and lobbying companies to improve situations for their constituents who need help.
This room is so cramped and outdated.. will we be using this is another 50 years? 100 years? God what a state.
history and tradition mate it's one of the few good things we have, we don't need some bland minimalist chamber like other countries
nah those seats dont look comfortable at all very upright and crammed next to other people
So how long do you think we should keep it looking like this with 'history and tradition' being the only aspect keeping it that way? The year 3000? Do you suppose it will still look medieval then?
@@555droid6 yeah why not. it'll be like machu pichu or something
I wish people would read the WEForum on global government. Chuck your TV.
Thank you.
A lot of crying tories and reformers in the comments. You lost, get over it, democracy has spoken. Now you've all lost you suddenly want the voting system to change. We had a referendum on it in 2011, the people wanted First past the Post, listen to the people.
They also fail to mention that the Tories and Reform/Farage people maniulated this system in the 2019 election to put Boris into power. It's only undemocratic when they don't get their own way.
You have Reformers all wrong! We wanted the Tories out; they were terrible, and we knew Labour would increase its majority by voting for reform. But Labour will build our future success.
If you believe democracy still exists
We’re truly lost.
Shut up Claire.
Mrs Thatcher said in 1983 that the first past the post system gives strong goverments .I didn't hear too many tories complaining in 2019 when they won on a minority vote share and now when it hasn't gone for them they are throwing the toys out of the pram .
Where’s Guy Fawkes when you need him….
@mrwilliamz311 most of these MPs are completely new - at least give them a couple if weeks to set up and see what they can do!
@@quintuscrinis That’s a fair point looking at it from an individual perspective, but the problem most people overlook when thinking about institutions is the hegemonic and pedagogical function of all institutions meaning: it’s not about what they think, it’s what the institution allows; they’re employees after all.
Over the last 4 years, Parliament has demonstrated an absolute inability to hold people who have clearly breached their own rules much less ministerial rules, to account; parliament corruption has never been so rife and so blatant and that’s before we get into partygate, PPE, VIP lanes, corporate infiltration and bribery.
The voting system needs a complete overhaul preferably to Single Transferable Vote and whilst it is the case that we elect parties, how is it right that people we didn’t and wouldn’t vote for in a month of Sundays are able to occupy the highest positions in public office, namely PM??
It’s absurd and we need to remember we don’t work for this lot, it’s the other way around!!
We can talk about the WEF and Starmer’s self-proclaimed love for unelected globalists. Blair, his war-criminal handler is the infection that just won’t go away.
Noisier than a stadium!
And how manyof them are really well prepared for the job?
Room full of traitors and liar's! That will get karma for swearing in God's name and treating their constituents as second-class citizens who without them wouldn't have this position or even this country or it's tax money.
@Gamerlinkzz give them at least a few weeks to set up their offices and see what they can do then. The majority if these MPs are completely new to parliament and stood for election because they felt the same as you do about the last lot.
Go away now please.
that is a lot of over payed lazy people in one room
@@christhompson861 at least give them a few weeks to set up and be tested on what they can actually do.

335 seats on the gravy train and they are all rocking as much from the coffers as they can .
Remember; these people get £361 per day for just turning up to that place. And you pay for it. On top of their £91,346 wage, and expenses, etc, etc.
They do a lot more than just turn up to the house of commons. Most of their job is negotiating with other MPs and businesses to help their local constituents improve their situation, at least if they are any good.

@Vinsent1022 and what is the alternative? Living in a Putin-esque dictatorship where ruling is all about being rich and fleasing everyone else constantly.
Basic MP salary is £86,584. I would much rather MPs got paid a salary rather than needing to be mega rich so they can do it for free.
@@BobSmith-s7j I think you're quoting last years numbers... "The basic annual salary of a Member Of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons is £91,346, plus expenses. as of April 2024."
New mps and not old mps? Where’s all the old MPs gone to? 😊
We live in a weird country don't we?

Father the House ? ? Jeremy Corbyn has served as an MP the same length of time 1983 to Present, as has Edward Leigh, why is Corbyn not Father of the House?
Leigh was sworn in just before Corbyn back in 1983, so pips him to the post.

The exodus from the UK stepped up considerably during Labours last term and look at what they backfilled with. I think we’ll see a lot more go now and that’ll be the country done as a majority white country for good.
@SP-lw7mr sad isn't it. I remember this great country in the 70s onwards. Wonderful people wonderful patriotism.
@@darrell3716 I remember the silver jubilee street parties as a kid and growing up in a community that was overwhelmingly white, British and proud. Everything wrong with this country today can be traced right back to ‘97. Even down to silencing dissent by accusing people with ‘isms’ and made up phobias. So, people moved away from cites and large towns and some left for the EU, Australia and Canada.
