Speaking from experience, when a drop or speck of lava gets on your skin, yes brush it off immediately or it will burn into your bone. Brushing it off right away will take all layers of skin and most of the muscle or nerves etc... The actual spot is now a beyond 3rd-degree burn and no pain as your nerves are severed and cauterized. The surrounding area gets a 2nd-degree burn and blisters instantly. That area stings. Clean, bandage and carry on with your day at the volcano. Its just a flesh wound. Well, that's what I do :-) Those fire protection suits won't do you any good if you fall into a lava flow. I remember when those two were found dead out by the lava flow. I hiked not too far from them not knowing they were lying there dead as it was dark. People breathe that crap all of the time. I wear a respirator because I'm in the area for hours. That's just to keep my lungs safe from long term damage.
