- Since discovering the Mountains to Sea Trail myself, I've been able to figure out a few things that are really helpful for me when it's time to plan a trip on the MST. This video couldn't possibly cover everything out there but hopefully it points you in the direction of something that will work for you! Please let me know in the comments if you have another resource that you use to get out on the MST!

Thanks so much for helping your listeners learn more about how to hike the trail. Great video. We appreciate your love and support of the MST! Kate Dixon, Executive Director, Friends of the MST
Thank you for the kind words and thank you for all of the work you all do for us!
Still a great video after three years, can’t wait to check out the MST on FarOut
Thank you! I’ve actually been procrastinating on putting together an update to this video but glad this one is still helping!
@@SideTrailAdventures Well, you should still do that update for sure
Cant wait for the MST app. Thanks for the information!
Yeah, I'm excited to see how they develop the app...should really turn into a great tool. Thanks for watching!
👌 Thanks for the Day Hiker info.
I'm here for you good sir. Maybe we get out there together one day👍
Thanks! I’m going to use the Neuse River mileage chart.
Awesome! Hope it helps!
This is a great resource for the Mountains to Sea Trail. Thank you so much for putting all of this information together and out there! That spreadsheet for the Paddle portion is FIRE 🔥. And thanks for plugging the Podcast! Really appreciate it! I think it's time to get you on the show!
Thanks Julie...it was fun just sitting down and thinking about all the different stuff that's out there to help hikers get on the trail. Would be honored to be on the show! I've really enjoyed listening!
Plethora, a beloved word, from a beloved film.:-)
I could watch that movie over and over and laugh at the same lines every single time...just a classic. I can't say the word plethora without thinking of it🤣
Very Thoughtful and detailed tips.. Thank You. I will be doing the MST over the next 2 years and hope to have it completed by January 2023 maybe a bit later. This will be extremely helpful.. thanks brother..
I salute you sir...you'll definitely complete it before me. 2020 was a good year for getting some segments under my belt but I don't think 2021 will be as easy. Looking forward to the pics!
Glad to see information on this trail wish there was more that covered the whole thing
Thanks! A few things have changed since I made this video but the paid trail guides on the MST website are second to none for trail info. Thanks again for watching!
Good information, thanks for sharing Austin
Thanks Billy! I think it's time we got together somehow. I wouldn't mind being a sponge for some of your Uwharrie knowledge👍 Thanks for watching my friend!
@@SideTrailAdventures Yes sir! I sent you a message on FB messenger, I know it may be late notice but I've got a little proposition for you!
It’s nice that the hiking community is so helpful ( usually) and willing to share information resources . I don’t know if i’ll ever hike this trail , but I appreciate you taking the time to help others out . Thanks !
The hiking community is like no other...everyone is looking out for everyone else. With all the craziness in the world lately, hikers seem to be doing it right. Hope you're able to enjoy the trail out where you are and thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for the informative video. I'm doing the first section in two days and had no idea that there's a app. for the MTS.
Awesome! Hope you have a great hike. The MST Guide is good but I would use it with caution. Since I made this video, the app stopped being updated with changes from the trail. You should be ok with segment 1 but just something to be aware of. I'm hopeful that a replacement app will be out in the future 🤞 Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the kind words about The MST Guide! It's still a work in progress but I'm glad that it has been helpful for you in your planning and hiking. I definitely second the request to give back to the trail. Getting involved as a volunteer is especially rewarding!
Thanks for your help and allowing a peak behind the curtains! The app has been a staple for our trip planning and can't imagine going out without it now. Hope to see you out there one day!
This is a great overview of resources for the MST. Thank you for this video. I’m considering a thru-hike of it at some point in the future. Subbed! Cheers!
Right on! Some of the info is dated now (the segment guides aren't free anymore) but glad it helped. The MST isn't a traditional "thru-hike" but I love it because there's more than one way to get there (hike, bike, paddle). Thanks for watching and thanks for the sub!
Awesome video...I learned a lot about parking and gpx files. I have the Garmin and Gaiagps
Glad it helped...thanks for watching!
Great video and information. I haven't hiked in 2 years and I think my attitude is showing it, especially with NC weather lately! LOL
Yeah, I'm ready for some blue skies and high 60's for sure! Hope to see you out there...thanks for watching!
Nice work here. I'm certainly in the group that's watched more than one of your videos. Seeing all the terrain in video has been very helpful for my planning. I'm going to try to hike (bike on the road sections) the MST this summer. My wife will be supporting me from our camper and we'll be posting video on our channel Trail Me Away. We may get to your level of videography eventually.
Awesome, I can't wait to see the videos! Good luck on the trek...sounds like a blast. Thanks for watching!
This is an awesome video and I also subscribed. I love hiking and backpacking. I early retired from law enforcement (Rowan County, NC) in 2020 and this is something I've been wanting to do for a long time. I'm definitely gonna have to do it in segments and have wondered about planning these. I really need to look into the length of those segments. Winter / cooler months will be my time to hike these. I plan on downloading that chart...great job. I always carry a paper map with me also.
I really look forward to doing this....thanks again!!
Right on! This video is a little dated at this point so I would highly recommend downloading the Far Out app on your phone. There's a fee to download the MST maps/info but it is well worth the price of admission. I'd also recommend the "Friends of the Mountains to Sea Trail" Facebook group if you have a question that needs answering. Lots of good folks on there with lots of knowledge. Thanks for watching!
@@SideTrailAdventures Okay, thanks for the info, I'll check it out.
@@SideTrailAdventures I joined that group and uploaded that app...thanks for that info!
Sweet! Nice video. Love this Austin. I want to continue the MST. I love it. Crow✌️
Thank you my friend! We're eyeing segment 4 later this year if I can get the time off of work. You and the Alabama crew are always invited up here to NC if you're able👍👍
After talking with Betsy at FMST, I learned that they are moving away from printed guides and they will begin charging for the digital guides. This has already happened for the Piedmont Section. The digital guides are currently $3 per section or free if you are a FMST member contributing over a certain amount.
I saw the email about the digital guides. I think paying a fee is a good idea. This products don't just happen and if we as hikers/consumers like quality products, well sometimes that's going to cost a little bit. Money well spent in my books!👍
Hey Hiking Dude! I was just now reviewing segment 12 to walk. You are absolutely right about the guides. Trail Angels have been very very helpful. Could not have done 10 or 11 with out them. I am not a paddler so I am Walking/Hiking. Would like to do the western segments in the spring and summer. I did first 30 miles of 1. Fleece- looking for another hiking dude to hike those longer remote segments- 2, 3. 4, and 5.
Maybe I'll bump into you while I'm out there. I'm going to be doing 15-20 miles per day starting from Clingman's Dome in June.
Trail angels are awesome! I haven't experienced segments 3-5 yet but segment 2 can definitely be broken down into chunks. It follows the BRP for the most part so it wouldn't take much to stage a car here or there for a shorter trip. Thanks for watching!
I see I'm not the only one who obsesses over trail information! :-) One can never have too many maps! As an iOS user, I'm really looking forward to the app -- did you get a hint at a timeframe that you can reveal?
Hah, I tell me brother there's no such thing as too much trail information...but I think we might be getting close to that threshold😎 No official timeline for the app. PBS wasn't ready to put out a date which I respect but from what I gather, it's priority #1.
Awesome video, answered questions I have had. Made a subscriber out of me. Thank you!
Right on! Be on the lookout for the MST to be released on the FarOut app in the future. Not sure on timeline but I've been told its on the horizon. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video and the resources. After watching your videos on segment 1 this Is definitely one I want to do...assuming I am allowed to leave the state of Ohio this year.
I hear ya...COVID has definitely been the fun police lately. Segment 1 is awesome! I wasn't sure I would like the road walking on the BRP but it was just right and a really cool way to have a "trail experience". Thanks for watching!
Great info Austin. Beautiful trail. I’ve only been a small part of the Smokys section. The trail segment guides are good to know. 👍👍✌️
You can't go wrong with the Smokies for sure! The trail guides are super handy, even if you're only doing a small section out there, they've got great info that's hard to find elsewhere. Thanks for watching!
Great information! I’m looking forward to the iOS version of that app! I used it a little before I switched from Android. These days I make plans from the “Great Day Hikes” book and also will usually check out what’s in the area I’m headed with the AllTrails app.
Thanks for the shoutout! 👍🏻😀
Thank you my friend! I've thoroughly enjoyed watching your videos and learned a few things along the way myself. Thanks for watching as always!
This trail comes about 4 miles from my house in jacksonville. Adding it to the listof my trails yo do before i die
Right on! It's a great trail to break up into chunks. I started by just hiking the sections near my house. Thanks for watching!
Wonderful video! Thank you for all the Tips! I don’t know you could download other trail maps to Gaia GPS. And the MTS is now on FarOut. But I like to use Gaia as a backup. I’m making plans to backpack the first 500 miles or so. (West to East)
Right on! This video is a little dated at this point but obviously FarOut is the gold standard for trail apps. I downloaded it the minute it came out but Gaia is on there too since it's so versatile. Good luck with the hiking plans and thanks for watching!
Great video! Very informative, can’t wait to get out and do some hiking when England’s lockdown is lifted!
COVID has definitely been the fun police lately...hope you can get out there soon. The weather is going to start getting pretty nice soon. Hope its the same across the pond👍 Thanks for watching!
App pitch was so cringe. Gross.
Sorry that's all you got out of the video.
