A Sea Biscuit's Life

  • This video shows the life cycle of the sea biscuit Clypeaster subdepressus and is part of my master's thesis project at the Biosciences Institute of University of São Paulo.
We collected adults from sand beds of São Sebastião Channel (São Sebastião, SP, Brazil) and induced gamete release (eggs and sperm). We did the fertilization in vitro and followed the embryonic development in the laboratory, under light microscopy. Embryos become swimming larvae, approximately 0.2 mm wide, which we fed with microalgae until metamorphosis. A diminute sea biscuit grows inside the larva. When the minuscule podia and spines are formed the larva sinks and undergoes metamorphosis. The juvenile sea biscuit resorbs the larval tissue and begins to explore its new habitat, between sand grains.
The formal description was published in 2010:

We did the footage in the Marine Biology Center of University of São Paulo (CEBIMar-USP), located in São Sebastião, SP, Brazil, northern shore of State of São Paulo.

the absolutely ephemeral soundtrack to this incredible video has made me feel a spectrum of human emotion that was previously thought unobtainable by modern scientists. This song haunts my waking thoughts and illuminates the mindscapes of my dreams. I think of nothing but this melody and it dances in my steps and fuels my very existence. Thank you, truly. My life will never be the same.

This video is outstanding and I use it in my organismal biology class before they induce gamete release and observe syngamy in sea urchins in laboratory. Thanks for making this! I'm glad you have it here too; the one on vimeo seems to jump to the end and/or need more-recent browser updates to work. RUclips rocks! Bruno, YOU rock!

Dear Ross, thanks for using it in your classes, this is awesome! I have put a video with a few extra scenes here: figshare.com/articles/Sea_biscuit_life_cycle/763232 Can be useful if you want to show a specific process only or edit it into a new video. Cheers!

I tried... but I couldn't get the right conditions and food to make them grow happy. Nobody really knows how long they could take to grow to their adult size (about 20-30cm wide). Possibly years!

Hei! During early gastrula stage the embryo has radial symmetry. The tube that grows during gastrulation goes straight until the top tip of the embryo (left side) and then bends to the ventral side. This is what you see at 1:28, a tube slightly out of focus in the background and its tip (focused) closer to the ventral epidermis. Think the issue is that these photos are oriented with the top of the embryo to the left... Take a look at the photos from the article (linked in the description)!

@afy282 Do you mean the juvenile (at 3:00)? I was not able to follow the complete development until the adult form, but from this point on they basically grow and their skeleton gets thicker. In the video the juveniles are 0.5mm wide, but the adult of this species can reach up to 30cm! They might take decades to grow this big. Other species are smaller and have a shorter life cycle.

if you pause the vid at 1:28 the cell has radial symmetry.. yet the larva's mouth appears to be on the side.. so my main question is why the "tube" inside the embryo does not bend to the side? it seems like its going straight to the opposite side of the sphere around 1:28 min mark.
