I am only 37 and when I heard "Is The Who a real band?" I STILL just about died. Like, I was minted in '86, but I still know Journey, Styx, Mamas & the Papas, Queen, Lovin' Spoonful, etc! And those are WAY before my time! I even know about Cab Calloway, Billie Holiday, and Louis Armstrong. Who is failing to educate the younger generation on music history here? Because THAT'S who I feel I should be mad at right now.

I saw recently the best explanation of this, from the other reaction channel, Lost in Vegas guys, where they are two black guys reacting to music, and they had to say they do not know the "white" rock and roll bands because they grew up listening to "black" stations and music, so why or when would they have ever heard songs like stairway and such. The band members are very talented, and have to come up with the song on the spot, but yes, the rest do know what styles they are aware of, just like others know what ppl the guys can imitate are.

The Who are an English rock band formed in London in 1964. Their classic lineup (1964-1978) consisted of lead vocalist Roger Daltrey, guitarist Pete Townshend, bassist John Entwistle and drummer Keith Moon. They are considered one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century and have sold over 100 million records worldwide. They are cited as an influence by many hard rock, punk, power pop and mod bands. The Who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.

The improv is based on "My Generation" if this channel wants to react to a Who song. The guitarist is known for the large windmill motions to play a chord. The bassist was very stoic, and his bass had a long neck. Also the band is infamous for the guitarist and drummer breaking their instruments at the end of a concert.

So Ryan wanted Colin to say "An Owl" but Colin twisted it cause he didnt know know where Ryan was going with it. People are laughing at backstreet boys because, 1. No bird (maybe a parrot) in their right mind goes Backstreet boys. 2. It felt so forced. like Colin was trying to think of a random style of music or band that Brad and Wayne had to sing.

I think Colin did know, he just didn't want to make it easy for Ryan and try to get a laugh out of it. Ryan actually helped him in a way by asking what sound an arctic tern makes. It's like the time Ryan asks, "what comes to mind when I say Ricky Ricardo and great cigars" and Colin, instead of saying "Cuba", says "tapioca".

My guess is…the second Colin heard the word “bird,” the first thing that came to his mind was the song “Turn, Turn, Turn” by the Byrds. And when he realized it’s not what Ryan was going for, he somehow tried to get things back on track…until he delivered the sound of the Arctic Tern.

The game is called "Greatest Hits" and the goal is for Ryan and Colin (the pitch men) to sell the latest CD compilation album. This would be an example of them trying to sell 'Songs of Gunsmoke." Ryan and Colin use the most insane ways to try and transition into the next real band style and fictitious song title. It is then up to the others to make up the song using the style they provided - in this instance, The Who singing 'Ms. Kitty Left Me So I'm Sleeping With My Horse' and 'Two Asses In A One Horse Town' in the style of an opera. The ladies playing the actual music are also improvising a generic tune that resembles the band's actual sound. Everything is improvised - EVERYTHING!

yes TheWHO is a band so is THE Guess Who
Remember this is improv.. So Collin is trying to follow Ryan's lead and this was all he could come up with. It's so funny because none of what Collin is saying makes any real sense
The musicians are playing in the style of the band that Ryan picked, so in the first case, they are playing in the style of a "The Who" song
Right, you are explaining the idea here. This is a kind of "Infomercial" where they would do like a 30 mins commercial and try to sell these types of things. This was done for a lot of different products not just music CDs

This is absolutely my favourite bit on WLIIA, well top three, always makes me laugh. A great example of Colin coming up with the most random things and trying to break up Ryan. Of course, Ryan wants him to say "an owl" because the next song is by The Who (an owl always says whoo, the name of the band). Instead, Colin says a tern (an arctic tern to be precise) and when prompted to say what sound it would make, Colin thinks so fast he says Backstreet Boys and cracks up everybody. Wayne finds it so funny, he can't stand up. This bit is up there with when Ryan crashes his head on the desk and breaks the lights and stays in character as Carol Channing and Colin trying to figure out which sex people are. Both these last two are party quirks game.
The Who are a real band. One of their best known songs is My Generation ("talking 'bout my generation") from the '60s. Not surprised you don't know them but you probably have heard some of their songs.

8f nobody has mentioned it, the song styles of any given Greatest Hits game are a preselected list for Ryan and Colin to choose from. The singers have that much warning of what styles they might have to sing in, but that's it. The subject of the songs comes from audience suggestions, and the titles are improvved by Ryan and Colin.
I don't know if the ladies decide the list, or if the producers select it from a list that the ladies have said they can play.

"Greatest Hits" is the game. Ryan & Colin are playing two late-night commercial salesman supposedly promoting a CD collection - the theme of which the audience picks. Then Wayne and whoever's the fourth person has to make up a song based on the theme and whatever music style & weird title Ryan and Colin come up with. And yes, Laura Hall more or less improvs whatever music style they meed.
Ryan expected Colin to say "an owl" so that he could use the band "The Who" for the style. Colin - being Colin - said an Arctic Tern...then needed to come up with a band name that the bird's squawk sounded like...and did his "Backstreetboys" squawk.

The firs son is a parody of the song "My Generation" by The Who.
Is a great song and a classic if you want to react to it in the future.

The band is Laura Hall and whoever she has with her. She tries to mimic the style of whoever the "musicians" are. The lyrics and the music are improv.

The melody that they play is similar to My Generation by The Who. Usually they play something similar, different enough so they don't break copyrights, of the most well-known or popular song of the singer or band they mention. I heard that before the show, they get together and decide on a couple of singers or bands they'll mention but I don't know how true that is. If it is, Colin should have known they would do The Who but Colin being Colin just deviated from that. One story I heard is that the Backstreet Boys were discussed as well as The Who and that Colin just got confused and that's where the arctic term saying Backstreet Boys comes from. Whatever the real story, it's hilarious what he did.

This is the game that I thought you should be reacting to, not this particular one, which I don't remember, but the type of game. As you guessed they are selling a CD collection on late night TV. They are given a theme for the collection, but otherwise they make up what kinds of music on the fly, so the musicians have to adapt. It is always Ryan and Colin doing the selling. Wayne always sings, and the guest sings if he or she is a singer. Some are, some aren't. Not surprisingly this is the game that Wayne excels at the most.
As for The Who, when I started listening to rock in around 1980, The Who was probably the third biggest band in the world after the Beatles and Rolling Stones. (At least they were top 5 if you thrown in Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd). These things shift, and they do not seem to have the same following on RUclips. They were a very good 60s band that turned into a truly amazing 70s band. (Actually the shift comes in 1969 with their rock opera Tommy). But besides the music they were well known for Pete Townsend's windmill guitar playing, Roger Daltrey's spinning of his microphone by the wire, Townsend and drummer Keith Moon's habit of destroying their equipment on stage, and base player John Entwistle's ability to not move at all as everything is going crazy about him.
The obvious song to do by them is "Won't Get Fooled Again." But if you want to see what turmoil they could do on a stage you could try "My Generation" as done on the Smothers' Brothers Comedy Hour, although I doubt Dick Smothers was as surprised as he pretends to be.

While the show consists of mostly male comedians, there have been females from time to time. Denny Siegel, Kathy Kinney, Kathy Griffin, Kathy Greenwood, Whoopi Goldberg (only for a couple episodes though). They even had from across the pond Josie Lawrence on the show, who was a regular on the British version of the show, and the only Brit to appear on the American version.

Okay, we may have been remiss in guiding you through your 70's music experience. The Who was huge and influential. On the plus side, great music like I Can See For Miles, Baba O'Reily, Teenage Wasteland... To many to mention really, oh, and of course, the rock opera Tommy... On the other hand, they were also famous for smashing guitars on stage, destroying hotel rooms, and for people getting trampled trying to get to the front of one of their concerts--The Who helped lead the change to the existing 'first come, first serve' seating policy at many venues for the safety of their fans and other audiences--so despite some very human faults, they also saved lives making it safer for future generations to attend concerts. They are worth your time to listen to... And, as a bonus, you'll appreciate the comedic parody of the actors in this skit just that much more...

A little behind-the-scenes info regarding the band:
(Spoiler warning for those who don't want to ruin the mystery.)
The ladies prepare their music ahead of time and then showcase it for the performers (aka "the boys" although sometimes there's also a "girl") before taping so they'll know what music styles are available to choose from on that day.

The Who were the bad boys of rock.. They are what every punk band wished they were.. You are familiar with at least a dozen of their hooks.. They sold their catalog years ago and are used in an endless stream of TV shows and movies ..All he hard hitting sound clips from CSI were Who samples..... Since you are familiar with theater you might have heard of Tommy .. A 1969 Rock Opera turned Movie and later a Broadway show. Their Other opera was called Quadrophenia which was also turned into a movie.
The who is not just a rabbit hole, there is something a lot more dangerous down there than just silly rabbits.. And now that I just spent 2 hrs down the rabbit hole looking listening for the right video for you to start with.. try "The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again (Live at Kilburn 1977)"

The premise of the game is that Ryan and Colin are TV pitchmen. They are hyping a new CD set, while trying to throw off Brad and Wayne by giving them a group or genre to sing and the name of the song. Laura is the pianist. The and the other musician (I can't remember her name) both improv the music while Brad and Wayne improv the melody and words.

Almost any band you hear referenced by Ryan and Colin are real, they're improvising and setting the other two up, either with a genre or a style as defined by a band. I wont rag on anyone for not knowing a specific band, we all hear something for the first time *sometime* . The Who is definitely up there in the "WHAT?!??!"-o-meter though. I'd wager even if you don't know them by name, you've heard one or two of their songs in TV shows and movies.
