  • In this video I will show you how to replace and upgrade speakers with aftermarket Rockford Fosgate speakers in your Jeep Cherokee. This process is very similar to other Cherokees but today I will show you how to do it on a 97-01 Jeep Cherokee XJ. This process may be similar on other Jeep models such as the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler. I will show you how to do the whole job from start to finish. If you have any other questions that the video doesn't cover make sure to comment below and I would be happy to answer.

    For anyone who has a 97-01 Cherokee XJ and they’re thinking about replacing all four speakers, for the front doors, you can do what this guy did or splice your new aftermarket speaker wires to the back of your aftermarket stereo (that’s what I did)
    LF: Positive + White
    LF: Negative - White with black Stripe
    RF: Positive + Gray
    RF: Negative - Gray with Black Stripe
    For the Rear speaker replacement, for plug and play replacement speakers, you can save yourself some time by using a pair of Speaker Harness Adapters without having to hack your factory wiring (part number 72-6512) which was also what I did.
    You can use whatever sizes works best for you. I used 6.5’s for my four speaker replacement with a bit of modifications (had to drill new holes) hope this helps someone who needs help replacing speakers.
    Happy Jeeping friends

      Yup you probably can fit 6.5 speakers in the front doors or rear without mods. My 6.5 pioneer speakers fitted right on the front doors without modifications. For 5.25 speakers install, you may need to drill new holes

    Side note, for anyone looking at speakers: the doors can handle 6.5" speakers, even though factories are 5.25 in the doors. while doing this project, it may also be a good idea to run new wires to each speaker if you have the time. A friend assisted me in this endeavor and we ran the rear wires down the trim and along the floor up to the dash. The doors are known problem areas for cracking and splitting, and although I had originally fixed the busted factory wires before, it was time for new wires to run from the doors up to the head unit. New speakers will help the sound, but a worn-out head unit will kill almost any performance increase you were looking for. I finally got a new one and it was a massive improvement.

    • @OutJeeping
      @OutJeeping  5 лет назад +10

      I wouldn't worry about the rear wiring as there is nothing to really go wrong from the head unit back. But for the fronts its always good to check or replace those wires which I mentioned in the video.

      @@alexwang3669 they're fine for the windows, the depth is hardly different, if at all. They take up the same outer circumference as the stock speakers, the cones just take up more of that space.

    When you screw the speakers into the front doors it is really important to seal them in if you can, that means absolutely no air gaps between the chassis and the car door. If there are any gaps it just diminishes the bass coming out of the speaker.The air being pushed by the speaker can "short circuit" through any air gaps stopping the bass from being very deep. If possible all the holes in the door panel should be blocked up, but there's a limit to what is possible, the ones close to the bass driver are the most important to block up. Hope that might help someone out and thanks for the video :-)

    • @OutJeeping
      @OutJeeping  3 года назад

      Not necessarily... You do want it sealed up for the most part but as you look at sub-woofer enclosure's, there are air channels cut in them to allow air to be drawn and pushed out. You wouldn't want it 100% sealed because then it would act as a vacuum on the back side making the speaker work harder if you know what I mean. I am by no means in audio expert but that is my 2 cents.

    • @Sunsetseven
      @Sunsetseven 3 года назад +2

      @@OutJeeping yes you do want it 100% sealed, a ported enclosure is something different, if you put it in a door then you want to seal up all the holes if you can, you can only port a speaker if there are NO other holes in the cabinet it is in, else the air will leak out of them ruining your porting. A sealed cabinet uses the density of the air trapped in the cabinet as its "spring" to stop it moving too far and damaging itself. In a car door its very difficult to seal up all the holes so its always a compromise, that's why generally speakers with bigger magnets are better as they have a larger force trying to keep the cone where it should be! Cheers

    Informative video. The only thing I think was missing with putting aftermarket speakers is letting your audience know which wires are positive and negative colors. This makes a difference on your polarity of your speaker and sound quality. Kudos on the install though.

    Hello, So I have a problem with my 2001 XJ Sport, there is no sound, The radio has time and when my dad took it out and hooked it up It worked, so we don't believe it’s the radio. While doing research I saw that a lot of people said there can be bad wiring in the door, we checked the wiring in the door and all the wires were fine, Now I'm not sure where to look. If its a wiring problem I'm not sure where, and all the speakers look good, but I can't promise the speakers are good, it just seems weird for all of them to be bad. Has anyone else had this same problem and were you able to fix it? Thanks in advance for all answers.

    • @OutJeeping
      @OutJeeping  4 года назад +1

      Yeah if you were to have any wiring issues it would be in the door jams in the front. It could also be a ground issue with the head unit. You have to make sure that the one wire that goes to the back of the head unit is grounded. If it's not hooked up you might still get a display but it might not have the speakers work.
