    This should be titled : Alex Honnold and Jim Zellers: Two Very Different Backpacking Philosophies.
    Also love how Honnold suggests a bear can is unnecessary, then Jim heavily implies he has fought a bear over his food, and won.

    Funny watching Jim getting mildly annoyed at Alex's comments. Most companies would edit that kind of stuff out but it makes it feel more real and less produced

    This series is great! The people felt balance of correct information and conversation, and everyone has different ideas of what to bring and how to do things.
    Also, it’s so refreshing to hear a ‘how to’ video not prescribe that you must do things a certain way. Just be prepared and get out there!

    The most important thing to do before backpacking is to make sure you tell someone where you are going, what trail you intend to take, and when they should worry if you are not back. Tell someone you know, leave a note on your car dash (you do risk theft with this one), some trailheads will allow you to post your departure and expected return info, and if you get a permit that info will be known to the officials but you don't want to rely on them alone.
    One slight injury or change in the weather can snowball into something fatal. Your best bet is if someone outside your group knows you are in trouble.

    • @michaelb1761
      @michaelb1761 3 года назад

      I always leave my itinerary with at least one other person, but I never leave it at my car for the very reason that you mention. I can't see a reason that leaving my itinerary posted on my car has any advantage over just leaving it with the person who is most likely the one contacting authorities if I don't get back on time.

    • @nealteitelbaum8660
      @nealteitelbaum8660 3 года назад

      @@michaelb1761 I agree. Leaving it in the car window is kind of a last resort. It's much better to do it the way you do.

    My wife and I use water shoes over flip flops at camp. Light and airy for letting your feet breath after a long day of walking but secure on your feet unlike flip flops. Plus you can throw socks under then if it’s cold.

    • @michaelb1761
      @michaelb1761 3 года назад

      They are. On the permit, at least everywhere that I hike, they want you to include your itinerary. This is primarily so they know where to search if you don't return by your exit date.

    I'm team Alex. That first aid kit looks too big and that bear canister will hold about 8 days of food for one person. Additionally, a cat hole should be 6 to 8 inches deep, not at least 8 inches deep. I asked a ranger about this, and a deeper hole isn't necessarily better as the biologic activity will be less the deeper you go, increasing how long it takes to break down the waste.
