Here are my top 8 tips when it comes to styling your bookshelves. Combine the tips or isolate just one to focus on before you move onto the next. Once I started color coordinating my book spines, the kids’ toy storage/organization made complete sense on the same shelves 💡
Oh man, I NEEDED this video! I'll watch it a few more times before I tackle the shelves in the living room that just aren't "right" yet. Thank you Julie!
Thank you Julie! I am a bibliophile. I have a lot of books that are very special to me that I read over and over. I also have many for references and direction for creating my artwork. Your idea for kid's cubbies is simply perfect and fits right in with any decor. I dislike backward facing books too! It makes me a bit crazy, but now I know why there are so many decorating books/pictures with them facing that way or are blurred out. The same goes for why they don't reveal artwork. Who knew? I copyright my art, so why wouldn't others? Thanks for all your har work and your professional insight. You're a gem!
Hi Julie, I have collected a lot of antique books. Some for their beautiful covers, and some for art and some signed. I have some turned to see the old pages and others for their covers. I have mixed it up a little and they look great, with small oil paintings, statues pottery, and other things. Even have a cool old Chinese long brass covered letter holder, box, that is embossed with chinese figures I got at an estate sale.
Watching this for the second time! I just put bookcases in our cozy living room and I am about to start filling up the shelves. We love books so they will take up most of the space. But I love the idea of hanging things on the back of the shelves and of adding some collected personally meaningful items. Thanks, Julie!
Love, love, love ❤. I can tick some of these 8 off, but still need to work on others. Slowly, slowly. The examples you've shown are just gorgeous. Sibongile.
I love a good shelfie moment. I would say wait to add things that are meaningful to you. I hate seeing generic stuff on ALL the shelves. I find it more interesting if the items have a story..
Can’t tell you how many HomeGoods accessories I’ve donated over the years. The pieces that stuck are usually the ones I thrifted, was gifted, or made! 👍
I love this video so much your tips and the images you showed were so beautiful and inspiring . I wish had space for more bookshelves I already have a big one but I love books so much. Your videos are wonderful. I was wondering will you ever do a video on choosing a colour for the bedroom and how to decorate your bedroom space for different personalities
I enjoyed this video very much - some great ideas, thank you! I've been working on the bookshelves in my husband's office as they were muddled up, the books were all over the place and since he does a lot of video meetings for work, I think it's important that it looks good behind his head!! I also threw a few Feng Shui element colors and items in for good measure and luck! You've given me loads of inspiration - I plan on doing more changes this weekend 😃
Julie I love your videos ❤ These tips are great and I’m looking to have some built in book cases made in our snug room so I will definitely take your suggestions on board. First I need to be ruthless and get rid of a lot of books!
Nope on the books by color. Unless you have only a dozen books or unless all your books are 1 genre, how fast can you locate a particular book if they are organized by color? How do you remember what color each book jacket is?
This is my bugbear. I have a lot of books and the fiction are by author and the non-fiction by subject. Sure it would look neat by colour or size but I'd never find what I wanted!
Great video, like always! I was going to comment on turned books. 😬 I do think wrapping them in a neutral thick paper can look nice if one doesn’t care for their colours/design.
when designing a bookshelf we have so many books but we also want to have a glass partition for collectables. Would you have the glass in the middle (books flanking both sides) or on the end for more fresh look?
Dear Julie, I adore you very much. I wish you can do two things for me: speak slowly and break out your contents into two sessions, so that each session is not too long. I love all your ideas, suggestions, photos, consultations. / from the hearing declined, cognitive declined senior.
I like this video but it would be helpful if you slowed it down a bit and show some examples of how specific things work together. E.g. at 3:55 I can't tell what you mean by that instruction with the example you show.
Thank you But they say Not to leave any shelves open because of poison arrows. because of that i cant have bookcases it is not fair. plus they say Not to put the books in vertical and horizontal mixup. and you are advising the opposite as a feng shui knowledgeable person. i am really confused. Could you explain this if possible please?
My books are always arranged by genre, topic and author. For example: Africa, then its history, culture, literature and religions. These tips wouldn't work for me. I couldn't find a specific book, easily, if they were organized by size and color. I do stack some verically and others horizontally.
I laugh every time I see books flipped with pages out. My bookstore did that in the mystery section on April 1. I place my books by category, or I couldn't find what I am looking for. Guess my shelves are more of a library. I do mix in objects that relate to the category.
Arranging books by color? What the hell? How empty headed is that? Books are not for some color expose. We all learn our colors in pre-school. No need to reinforce this basic elementary knowledge. I read my books, there for like a level headed honest person I arrange them by subject matter. I guess crazy is in vogue....... so sad........
Believe it or not, some people espacially buy books in a special colour just for decoration nowadays!!! I have seen it in some "home" videos. Couldn't believe. What ist happening here? I don't understand. Maybe I'm too old or too old- fashioned or whatever for this..... Greetings from Germany.😊

Start by removing everything from the shelves and let them breathe for a few days Martha! I’m sure inspiration will strike with a blank canvas 🙌

I never thought about decorating the back of the bookshelf! ❤

Even tho we’re ‘post covid’ bookshelf styling is still a thing. Espeically with people still doing video interviews from home. ❤ this.
Consider it your rotating gallery 📚 🖼️ 💖

Thank you for watching Sibongile 🙏💖
Thank you. So concise and creative.🎉
Yes I have book shelves in our home office and living room. This is great to refer to when I’m struggling to redecorate them!

8 terrific tips! I'm changing mine up today!! Thanks Julie!!!
Thank you julie for your inspiration

I like the idea of using wallpaper
Way to go Julie! My fellow Asian Sister!!
This video is a solid 10/10.
Julie that was another fabulous video. Thank you for sharing. Stay well♥️
Thank you so much, you are a lifesaver
Great video and tips Julie!
I hate all the conflicting colours of books so I really liked the pages facing outwards lol. I'll try it a few thing, thanks :)

Awesome tips...thank you!
Thank you for watching 🙏😊
Thanks!
Thank god someone finally said turning your books back to front is annoying 😂 as an avid reader it drives me nuts! How would I find anything!?
this is perfect timing! My issue is that my bookshelves are deeper and taller than wide.
Those deeper and taller cubbies are perfect for lining the backs with artwork!
Great video, like always! I was going to comment on turned books. 😬 I do think wrapping them in a neutral thick paper can look nice if one doesn’t care for their colours/design.

Hello, can you make a video with sofa recommendations? Please , thanks
Can you do one with a bookshelf that is open.
If I like a more minimalist kind of look, is it good to go with floating shelves instead of a built-in bookcase? Any other tips or thoughts?
Thanks for confirming my suspicions about hiding the book titles! My initial response to these photos was not positive.
I don’t know anyone that leaves them that way in real life 😅
Dear Julie, I adore you very much. I wish you can do two things for me: speak slowly and break out your contents into two sessions, so that each session is not too long. I love all your ideas, suggestions, photos, consultations. / from the hearing declined, cognitive declined senior.
Thank you so much for watching and sharing feedback Sheila! I will take note for future videos 🥰
Coordinating by book type is what I do. Health, bibles, etc. I would never find what I was looking for if I coordinated by color.
Perish the thought of organising books by subject! lol some nice ideas though

Imagine space with a comfy chair and blanket and foot stool snore ah yes!
The perfect retreat 😍
❤
Thank you for watching Ellis 🙏💖

Definitely a library. Jam packed despite massive culling....😂
Clever bookstore 😂
“Group by size and colour”, or “How to signal to your guests that you’re an idiot who doesn’t actually read the books but just has them for show”
How about books by subject sub-heades by author? For goodness sake.
That works too 😊 whatever makes your sees h easier
As I look around, I realize I missed one key point: EDIT! Hoh boy; do I need to edit!!!
The KEY to a designer look! It’s harder than it looks 😅
This looks really expensive and really time consuming. I feel defeated 😞
How to design a bookshelf if you don’t read.
I wouldn’t bother with bookshelves you haven’t read most or if have recycle your not going to read again waste of space
Arranging books by color? What the hell? How empty headed is that? Books are not for some color expose. We all learn our colors in pre-school. No need to reinforce this basic elementary knowledge. In this digital age you put books together by colour and size? Because you never read them because your'e busy checking your smartphone for likes?
🤡Bernays' wisdom is TRICKLING still, much to Dieudonné's "Arriere-Gout de Pisse planetaire" 😂
Thanks!
You’re the best Sheila! Thank you for your support ❤️
