    I learned the Polari in the British merchant navy in the mid 1955.

    Round the horn radio program brought polari into the mainstream and eventually it got picked up by some celebrities although the word and meaning of naff got mis-used.Princess Anne told someone to naff off,wrong.! Naff means, not nice,horrible tasteless etc. An example would be the reaction to an ugly dress for instance,you’d say,”What a naff frock,or, naff drag dear!

      Naff in polari stood for not available for fucking....so it described anything straight and not bona....naff omi is a straight man. Nantie trade there dear he's naff

      I always thought it referred to straight guys who were NAFF meaning Not Available For Fucking

    Polari (or I guess a modern Afrikaans sytle) is still being used in South Africa, if im not mistaken.
