      he is. Him and Todd Sucherman amazed, the level they're on. Todd should def be in a more prog band, no offense to the legendary Styx, but Todds playing is so far beyond what's needed for their music. It's like taking steroids to bench 135 pounds once.

      Maybe his solos can be boring with a few tricks added in here and there? I'm not saying Benny is bad, but there are different drummers out there for sure. Drummers with spice and flavor and emotion, like Keith Carlock.

    • @EnervatedSociety
      @EnervatedSociety 6 лет назад +11

      I looked up Keith Carlock and decided to watch based on your recommendations. Watching with uneasy tension while this man had seizures on the drums, sweat pouring everywhere, and gyrating as if the throne has too hot, 14 people were shot outside my window, the whole block was set ablaze, and we had evacuate the neighborhood. When the smoke cleared one question came up more than any. Who did all this? It turns out Keith Carlock drumming was so terrible people started shooting and setting things on fire to make it stop, then lost all memory of it. I myself, killed all my fish. If it wasn't for the cameras recently installed throughout the neighborhood we'd all be in an episode of Scooby Doo, in search of the Mystery Machine. So thanks for nothing.
      True story.

    I always enjoy seeing the “thumbs downs” from the self-appointed masters of percussion. They have an old issue of Modern Drummer magazine, a “Pearl” t-shirt from eBay and a 4-piece drum kit their mom picked up at a yard sale. They have been trying to master Wipe Out for three years and they hang out at drum shops, looking at sticks, hoping some kid will ask “Hey man, are you in a band ?” Yet, they post their negative wisdom and insight in comments, so future generations may benefit from their teachings. We should all be grateful for them.

    • @Nowhy
      @Nowhy 5 лет назад +1

      @@edwardbrown2142 yes, feeling like you seem to be talking about is about experience but there is also an exception of a feeling outside of experience; a "feeling" from within where one doesn't follow any "pre-made" plans. Originality lies there and it has to do with trust. If somebody only trusts what experience teaches is (feels) right, then one is bound to fail to hear the silence between the notes and so can't hear the most beautiful song - in silence. It seems impossible to find the right words to express directly what I am getting at... Expressed negatively one could say, that if someone beliefs that a person consists of all the experiences of his past then that person denies any originality in himself.
      What made Benny Grep groovie might not so much all the practice but his showing of humility in regards to his lack in groove. Would he had believed that he was already groovy back then and wanted to be always right, then there would be no way for him to find his, let's say, true groove/mastery (which almost all famous musicians nowadays lack - like their fans which don't dance). Surly, one has also to practice what one preaches ;).

I've been playing for several decades, and even though I've had many favorite drummers, I've never bought signature gear - with the exception of this one. It's SUPER versatile; you find plenty of Benny solos where he uses two of them, for different tones/pitches. It cost me roughly $950 USD, and I don't regret it one bit...

      Adil Lukman - I'm pretty sure he uses clear resonant heads on the resonant side of the drum. I'm not 100% sure of this - but I'm fairly confident for several reasons. One of those reasons is at the end of his "Art & Science of Groove" DVD. He spends an hour talking about how to tune your drums, and he does a demonstration on the snare. In that demonstration, he shows clear on the resonant side...
      This isn't proof, of course. However, I don't know many kit drummers who use batter heads on the reso side, and I assume from Benny's demonstration, he probably doesn't do it very often either. Hope that helps!

    I have to say, that was the best drumming I've ever seen. I thought of Stuart Copeland but, this was so fluid and easy like creek water flowing over rocks.
