I own a lathe and find the bit about hot chips landing on your person to be spot on. PPE seems like the OBVIOUS solution - as if those giving you flack have never operated a lathe in their life.

Your a very talented guy, do your thing your way. The internet is full of guys who always know everything so just do your thing. If your taking requests however this build should be one that takes the rice buggy in a race..

It's funny and also kinda sad that you had to point out why you are taking safety precautions.
i always wear gloves. its simple, just dont put your hands on the spinny bit and you will be fine.
its not only the hot chips that really hurt but its also the part having sharp burrs or the dead center getting hot, or the drillbit getting hot.
best rule is not "dont wear gloves", best rule is "dont be an idiot and be aware of where your hands should and will be"

Being honest and sharing lessons learned from mistakes makes you the opposite of a "horrible" machinist - super cool video I wish I had the opportunity to learn how to use tooling like this. Your videos also serve to inspire/motivate others to take on similar work!
Please use the rpm gauge. It would be awesome if you could use the front and rear tires as rear tires on a single axle, that would allow you to use the speedometer as well.

Wow...Nice shop. I've been machining for +30 yrs. ALL machines throw chips on your arms, chest, legs, butt crack, etc. , at least lose the gloves. Man up. That piece of plate is going to warp like crazy when it heats up. That's why rotors are cast. Make mistakes, lots of mistakes, you usually won't forget what you learn from them. Looks like you're off to a great start. I wish I had that equipment 20-25 yrs ago. You be careful, I'll be watching. Really good videos!
It's called the chunk. Great build btw! But if u keep poking on the keypad of the mill with anything other than your finger, you'll damage the board.

Great work Chris, I've followed your progress from the start of your lathe build, I can see you have dialed your lathe in a bit more and it looks to be running well, well done. Now you have a mill revisit your cross and compound slide. I guess what I'm trying to say is don't settle for that's good enough for a home made lathe. With your milling machine you have the tools to really bring the lathe up to spec. In machining there really is not a lot of room for that's good enough. I had an aprentice hand me a piece heavy plate and his square and ask me is this square enough, I asked him is it square he said just about, I said well it's not square then. Once again keep at it don't cut any corners and follow the process. I think people might find it interesting if you showed your project planning phase and how you determine where to start and why you have made that decision, you could tie in your process for costing as well. These are very important aspects or the industry.

The issue with using steel plate for a disc brake is warping from heat. Disc brakes require certain steel alloys to prevent warping from use. They also require a certain design for cooling.
I have no idea why you think videos should be short. I watched Hert @ Hoonigaan bumble around with a Steam game for 2 hours yesterday.
RUclips 'short attention span' is a very old idea.

Im sorry but your not a horrible machinist, you do amazing work i wish i had a set up like yours , all the parts you make are professional looking to me . I want to build a rear end for a buggy build but will never be able to do anything as good as you , most likely i will just do a crappy solid axle , poor boy build lol or butcher we will see lol . Keep up the good work and positive attitude, really enjoy watching your vids .

Love watching the videos, you have some of the best engineered work on RUclips. I'm really impressed at the quality of your work, and dedication to doing top notch work. I'm a machinist myself and I can tell you (for a fact) that the burns, cuts and scratches that you get from the hot chips are just part of your every working day. It's little differant than putting your pants on in the morning. You get used to it!
Ignore the criticizers out there. You have your (valid, it seems to me) reasons for wearing protective equipment. Yes, certain clothing and jewelry items should not be worn while doing this kind of work, but ppe should be balanced out against what you are doing. As far as the length of your videos goes, make them as long as you need to. The first video of yours that I watched was when you made that lathe. I loved it and still like your videos, and would not mind at all if they were a little longer.

Merry Christmas rule of thumb let it cool down before the final cut's so the metal won't be expanded and sneak up on the final one. I've enjoyed watching your show's for a while now keep making them great.

Tough luck on the undersized shaft,I've been a machinist going on 30 years now,I don't make as many mistakes as when I first started,but they still happen.The difference between a master machinist and an apprentice?The master knows how to correct his mistakes.
If you don't have a pair already,get yourself some digital calipers.When turning set the calipers to your finished size,then zero them.Then when you take a measurement the calipers will show you the total amount your workpiece is oversized at that point.Whatever dimension they read,remember the amount your cutting tool needs to move in is 1/2 of dimension (cutting on the radius).
If your lathe doesn't have accurate dials on the crosslide,you can use a dial indicator mounted on the carriage to precisely measure it's movement.

What MrWreeve says about Your choice to protect yourself is true.The chips fly and burn your hair,etc,if you don't know how to protect yourself.When a person is cautious,you won't burn yourself,or get shredded by the ribbons of steel.You do as you choose.(I had a steel sleeve for my cig lighter,so chips didn't make me Pop.I quit btw.Years ago.)

By the way, are you sure the disc will be enough ventilated ? I would have done more holes
be cool to have a semi narrow bench that can fit two, with steering wheel and pedals that can slide center or left in 30 seconds.
I like the Star Pattern Cross-Drill, but more holes = More Dissipation and Less Weight, in turn cooler Brake Disc/(s) if you plan to have two brakes.

I think you should do a 2 seater IN LINE instead of side by side.. all you need to do is make the person behind the driver sit with they're legs spread around the driver seat to shorten the frame length... It's doable... Raise the rear seat just high enough the rear passenger can see right over the driver's head.. then head back to the rice ranch and rip it up!!!

Don’t beat yourself up. People that are afraid of making mistakes never learn from their errors. They don’t bother trying new things.
You need compressed air around your large to blow the chips away cos they can be caught in the chuck and pull your arms in and potentially cut you very badly.
Learnt that from an engineer who had seen it happen
As far as burning chips go im sure there is something that you can wear thats more skin tight and not baggy like a leather bracer thats super simple that snaps on

do a jack shaft setup as its hard to get low gearing for the added mass of the buggy. i had to have custom sprockets made to get the gearing down on my custom buggy and its still needs more as the bikes are geared really high. and your best bet would prob be trailing arms for the rear. easy to do and strong
Your not bad at it , you just have to remember. A 10thou cut is 20 thou off the diameter. Also a proper lathe with dials and power feed would help. I see your lathe has a lot of runout. So by the time it cut round the parts were to small. Nice little mill. You need a coaxial indicator to get your hole centers. The boring bar wasnt even coming close to being center. Unless the hole placement didnt matter.
For everyone wondering what cv axles he is using just go look at Go Powersports website where he gets all his parts.
They have 2 types of CV Axles. Neither is rated for 600cc though. 🤔

Awesome project!! What are the CV axles from? Never fear man. The bearings that don't fit, you can use a smaller bearing. Those are rotor bearings, so maybe look up the application to see if they are the inner, if so then look up the outer ones which are usually a little smaller inside diameter. Or find another application. If you still need the shafts.
