Dick York left the show because he had a bad back that was giving him too much pain to work. Apparently, he made a western movie many years prior to Bewitched, where he was hurt during a scene when he and Gary Cooper were trying to move a trolley car with a bunch of men on it. One of the other cast members let go of the trolley car, and it made Dick sustain all the weight of the car that was 180 pounds. This tore some muscles in his back, and it made him walk with a hunchback for the rest of his life. His back never was the same again. This injury was never surgically corrected, and it had deteriorated his spine so badly as he got older. Besides the back injury, he also had emphysema from being a long-time smoker, and he had to be on oxygen therapy wearing a mask. Because of this injury, he was never able to work again as an actor, where he died pennilessly in 1992 at the age of 62.
Somebody else posted this better explanation on a Bewitched fan site as to what happened to Dick York after leaving the show: "Dick York's back injury happened in 1959 when he was making the film "They Came To Cordura" with Gary Cooper. It was the second last day of shooting and Dick and Gary were doing a scene pulling a trolley car carrying several men. Something went wrong and when one of the other cast members suddenly let go of the handle, Dick was left holding the weight of about 180 pounds. This caused all the muscles on the right side of his back to rip. Although he was in severe pain for days, apart from taking a few painkillers, Dick did not really worry too much about it at the time. His spine healed but incorrectly. Over the years the pain became worse and Dick literally depended on numerous painkillers every day. It's believed that a combination of both is what caused his seizure on the set of Bewitched in 1969 which forced him to leave the series. Over the years, the discs in Dick's spine slowly crumbled. It is said that he also shrank from his 6'1" frame to 5'10" and was almost totally hunched before becoming bed-ridden in later years."
Here is another explanation from IMDB.com as to why he left the show:
"During the filming of "They Came to Cordura" (1959), Dick York suffered an excruciating back injury. This later led to a dependency on painkillers and to York missing a handful of Bewitched episodes in seasons 3 and 4. In January 1969 during season 5, he underwent a seizure on the set of Bewitched and resigned from the show while talking to producer William Asher in the hospital. In January 1969, Dick Sargent was announced to be taking over the role of Darrin. The rest of the fifth season was still airing on ABC that was mixed with episodes York filmed prior to leaving and several non-Darrin episodes filmed afterward."
It's so sad that Dick York had to die this way because he was a great actor. Rest in Peace, Dick York, you will always be the original Darren Stevens. You are still sorely missed by so many people all over the world. Thank you for your good work and your contribution to television as well as to film history.

"...you will always be the original Darren..."
      WELL, NOT QUITE...
Mr Asher and/or Ms Montgomery ORIGINALLY wanted Dick Sargeant for the role of Darren, but chose Dick York when film commitments kept Dick Sargeant from being available.
As I have commented after other Bewitched videos: it APPEARS ( I have no actual evidence to say this) but it appears that the Ashers picked cast members that 1 or the other had worked with or who had impressed them as easy and enjoyable to work with. They (obviously?) realized that it was going to be a better show if folks got along/had fun.

Agnes Moorhead was truly an actress of great class and stagecraft skill. Actors just don't possess that level of elocution, gesture, or sense of performance these days. She was truly unique and she seemed like such a decent person when I've seen her interviewed. She was always graciousness and class personified. A remarkable person.

I always felt that Jim Carey should've played the Darrin character in the Bewitched remake with Nicole Kidman. He is the spitting image (the jawline and facial features of Dick York and he would've recreated those unique York "bedazzled" and gobsmacked facial gestures so amazingly well as Jim Carrey has a cartoonish plasticity to his face as a comic actor). Nicole was a good choice for Samantha as she looks so much like her and has a similar prim girlish quality as Elizabeth Montgomery but unfortunately they mis-cast the movie with Shirley Mc Laine as Endora which was a disastrous and unfortunate choice (she's too short and doesn't have the high-style or grandeur of Agnes Moorehead) and the very unfunny and annoying 'what's his name' Will Ferrell as Darrin - which ruined the whole movie entirely. Such a bad, bad casting decision whoever made that! I can also perhaps see Meryl Streep as Endora, as she may be able to pull off the high-camp kinaesthetics and vocal registry which defined the Endora character as well as the high fashion style and theatrical stagecraft which is what made Endora unforgettable. Agnes was a highly trained and skilled theatre and Shakespearean actress and it shows in how she enunciated her lines and moved across the screen. She interpreted it like a George Bernard Shaw British drawing room comedy almost and gave the show a wonderfully mannered style which was still in fashion in the 60s but out of date by the 70s - but superb nevertheless. Agnes was Absolutely brilliant!! Meryl Streep could potentially pull that off (she is the right age now to play Endora) although I'm not entirely convinced because sometimes Meryl can come across as hammy in comedies but she would most likely pass and be great in it. My reasoning for this is that her character as Vogue Editor Miranda Priestly in 'The Devil Wears Prada' is very much in the lineage of Endora: a stylish, grand, older egotistical yet lovable "witch". Another possible good choice for Endora could be Helen Mirren or even (maaaaybe) Maggie Smith? Agnes behaved like a British actress even though she was American and so a British talent would probably capture that haughty thespian "star-text" more successfully. The Bewitched remake script was also terrible, disjointed and weird. The whole premise didn't make sense. It was awkward and not fun or funny. They need to simply remake it as it was and just tweak it slightly. The best remake of any 70s series was the original Brady Bunch remake which was very well executed and directed and brilliantly cast. Casting is everything in series remakes. I would love to see a proper remake of Bewitched where they remain true to the original characters and bring back the whimsical and camp spirit of the show and just write a better and more updated screenplay. Problem is Nicole (and Jim Carrey) are too old to play those characters now but I'm sure they could recast with great modern young talent. I hope some Hollywood producer reads my comments and does what I'm saying!

Paul Lynde was funny as hell. But the comic genius is lessened when reading about what a virulent racist he was in real life.

Yes, I know she makes fun of his name all the time. It's just that this particular version of it caught me off guard and I was also thinking of the ShowTime series "Dexter" which made it even more humorous.
