      I don’t have a service dog, but once, when I was dog sitting for my sister, I had a pretty bad toothache. I was in tears, crying from so much pain and my sister’s dog could tell. That night, she came into the bedroom with me (I left the door slightly ajar so I could hear her if she needed to go in the middle of the night). She stayed in there with me for a few minutes and then went back out. Instead of going to her bed, she laid right outside the door, like she was making sure I was ok. Whether it’s a service dog or just a pet dog, it’s amazing how intuitive dogs are.

    Jesus christ that airport staff. Honestly, you should report it. Not to get the person in trouble but hopefully to have the management educate the people that work there on how to approach a dog.
    As a dog owner to a very excited and social dog, having someone do that to my dog is literally a nightmare. It WILL result in jumping and biting and you don't want a 30kg dog jumping and playbiting at your arms. I was once literally being squeshed against a car, because I was holding back my excited dog that weighs more than half my bodyweight, because a grownup wanted to say hello and kept coming closer, hands outstraight insisting on saying hello eventhough I told to please back the eff up. Don't EVER greet a dog without the owner's permission first.

      I have people calling and try to pet my dog all the time and then complaining because she jumps ( she is a very friendly pup). When this happens I am taking no shit and literally shout at them " you shouldn't have called her in first place". Please always ask the owner if you can pet the dog. If a service dog please don't even try, your distraction can cause so much distress.

    • @reneephillips1880
      @reneephillips1880 2 года назад +13

      Absolutely agree. The best thing you can do for a dog when you see it out and about is to ignore it. Let it continue its calm walk, let it continue sitting at that Cafe table quietly and nice and still. I am that person that will say no you can't pat my dog or that will smack away your hand if you don't ask. One of my dogs is deaf and this is how she developed severe anxiety and leash reactivity from people touching her when she didn't know they were there. She now wears shirts and jackets when we walk that say do not touch in fluoro orange.

      I was just thinking the same. But apparently it’s still not the case. I am confused anyway about the fact that so many people don’t seem to know that the guide dog is working when in his harness. I mean, as a human, you don’t like it either to be distracted when you are working or the quality of your work might suffer. And if the quality of a guide dog’s work suffers, it might have serious consequences for the dog itself but also for the blind person. I just can’t understand it.

They just didn’t care about the danger they left the blind person in or the discomfort of the guide dog. I am mentioning that here to show that some people are just egoistic scumbags, who don’t care about the safety or the possession of others, let alone the safety of a disabled person. It might be an idea to keep an eye on him re: separation distress as there has been a few little flags that have popped up in the last few videos and if he is getting adrenaline surges when away from you then his body goes into fight/flight and therefore blood goes into muscles and away from his stomach and skin. This is why a lot of dogs that are anxious have skin issues. Could be a reason for his itchiness despite no medical cause. Especially given he sought comfort in your slippers previously and gets very excited upon seeing you even after you've only been out of sight a short time. It could be worth videoing him when he is alone in a room and seeing what he does (can he eat/drink/sleep) etc. Not as much of a concern for a dog that will be with you almost 24/7 but something to be aware of if it is a stress trigger for him. Loving the videos and wish you and the pup all the best!

    It’s such a powerful thing to be recognized by people who are experts in what you do. It’s totally different, I know, but for example I keep farm animals and when people who have never seen chickens and goats and whatnot say that they look good I’m kinda like “oh thanks, I’m doing my best”. But when like, a 70 year old farmer dude tells me my goats look really healthy and my chickens are so friendly it always makes me cry haha. It’s important to be recognized and complimented by people who know what they’re talking about! It’s a whole new level.

    Please, report that staff member. Since airports are so commonly used by people with all forms of disabilities, staff (whether security, gate attendants, concierge, workers at restaurants or shops, cleaners, pilots, flight attendants, etc.) are specifically trained to know how to handle an encounter with a service dog. This goes for airports in North America (United States and Canada) at least. Although I’m sure the employee meant no harm, their actions are quite concerning when they should know better. Either the person who trained that person dropped the ball and didn’t train them properly or the staff member specifically chose to ignore their training. Either way, that needs to be addressed.

    Getting praise from people who actually know what they're talkiing about is so heartwarming! Like so many times if you get compliments as a blind person it's for the weirdest things, like being able to dress yourself... So to actually hear that you have done something "properly" within the means available to you, it'ss rare to get tht feeling of getting real praise and coming to terms with the fact that you might actually be deserving of it.
    Dogs and toys are so funny... My pup's favourite game is tug, so he will play tug with anything soft or anything rubber. But if I leave a tug rope out, he will chew it to smitherines! At the same time he has this big teddy bear that he is so careful with and only chews on just before bedtime. And he usually brings the teddy to me if he thinks it's time to go to bed (and has at one point brought it to me when I was sick, trying to make me feel better). But my parents' dog, same breed, is an absolute marodeur and will destroy basically ANY toy.

My second dog, a poodle mix, came to me only for me to put task work on him for him to move on to his family and ended up mine when the contract fell through. He was VERY much like Gallop, did not wag his tail pretty much at all UNLESS I asked him “who has a happy tail?” He would then wag that tail so hard I was sure he would fly away lol. My students had so many questions about it and we talked a lot about these tools. I had lots of information to tell them about it because of watching your videos. Thank you so much for sharing them with us.

      Good luck on your journey towards a service dog! Do know that alerts for fainting are natural alerts, so a dog either has it or not. It cannot be trained, unless they know for sure that you give off a certain smell right before you faint and sadly that is something that is rarely ever found. Any service dog school saying that they deliver dogs that alert perfectly before placing (except for diabetic alert dogs) is a scam. Service dog schools that train for seizures or fainting actually train a response and/or micro reaction in the dogs. I have an alert and response dog myself and I got very lucky that my boy alerts to all that I need perfectly, but originally his main training was in response to my medical issues and not as an alert. When we got linked he showed potential alerts within the first month, though. Of course at the time I didn't call it an alert, as you need a minimum of 5 months of logging potential alerts before truly being able to call it an alert.
      I just got very very lucky and I hope you can get what you hope for/ need in a service dog too.
      If there's anything you'd have questions about feel free to ask me anything either here or on my service dog's social media (@koda.the.helper.dog on fb and ig). I know the laws for the UK by heart too, so that shouldn't be an issue even though I am from Belgium and not the UK (used to travel there and hope to go back to the UK soon)

    You know I think that for Molly, this time around, having a dog that was a little more experienced and had extra training is even more helpful. She's in constantly changing environments with all her travels so Bennex had a little more exposure to help with that. Honestly, all of Molly's dogs have always been amazing and been exactly who and what she needed when she needed it. Welcome home Bennix

    Glad Bennix did so well with the overly excited airport staff person. I don’t have a guide dog, do have a large german shepherd. I’ve been so fortunate recently with people asking if they can greet him. A person stopping and asking first is considerate, and much safer. Also, I was taught to ignore a dog who was working. Surprised an airport employee didn’t know this.

    When you were crying about how getting Bennix gave you your life back, I started crying too - because that's how I felt when I got my wheelchair, and my disabled parking placard. I still want to cry sometimes when I use them. It's so much more trouble to deal with - but it's also so liberating (my wheelchair is actually named Libby for that reason).
    I think something people don't understand about a lot of disabilities is that the accommodations we have aren't actually 'easy.' They make OUR lives better, but if someone who didn't have that disability tried to use them, it would end up being WAY more trouble than it's worth. But for us it's lifechanging.
    I'm so happy you have the tool you need to live your life fully.

When I heard your story about Gypsy which made me emotional I felt like someone felt the same way almost as when I lost Coco, Coco was not guiding me physically but he guided my emotions in accepting my disability with his love and companionship. Like you said about Gypsy, maybe someday I can have another kitty that might fill my heart as much as Coco did without thinking about replacement. I can't ever replace that kitty ever in my life. Your story inspires me. Thanks a lot.

    Hi Molly! I know this is probably pre filmed and Nico has already left, but since I watched the video where you talk with Nicholas about training I've been so interested. I am a sighted viewer from Argentina and service has always been my passion. Right now I am finishing my studies to be a flight attendant but I know it is not a career for life since is very tiring and taxing on your body. This series you've been doing made me realize the amazing work that is done with guide and service dogs and I would love to, in a future, help train this beatiful companions! I was wondering if you could ask Nico what skills or carreer paths would be necessary or convinient for someone like me who would like to train dogs.
    Love you, Molly! Keep the nice work and sending you the best luck with sweet Bennix!
    PS: as an almost flight attendant (hehe) I cannot believe the airport staff would be so unprofessional. This is something we are taught from the very begining of our studies and you should absolutely report it!

    • @khanhhm5762
      @khanhhm5762 2 года назад +1

      Hi Marcia:
      I'm not Molly, but I am a guide dog handler with over two decades of experience as well as intimate knowledge of the guide dog field. I hope what I am about to share will be of some help to you.
      First, while it is great that you are interested in training service/guide dogs, you need to know that it is an extremely physically and emotionally taxing job, in some respects much more so than being a flight attendant. In guidework for example, depending upon the organization, you can be working up to ten dogs at a time, all at various paces and levels of pull. You are out in all weather conditions--rain, snow, sun, etc. But while loving dogs is great, you MUST love working with people more to do this job well. You must be okay with the amount of stress that say, a guide dog, must be put through to learn to be someone's eyes. Your ultimate goal is to help make the lives of humans better, which takes priority over dog training. This does not mean that the dogs' well-being isn't important--it is, but the clients for whom the dogs will be providing service must always be the first reason you do this.
      You must be comfortable with being around all kinds of people and obviously, people with disabilities. You would be working with a variety of people, and people come with baggage. As Molly has said in numerous videos, getting a guide dog is an intense and emotional experience, and each handler deals with it differently depending on a variety of factors. You must be very comfortable with yourself emotionally because you will have clients who are angry, hurt, don't like their dogs initially--or never--and who may take some of that out on you. The bonding process isn't always smooth, and I know this from firsthand experience. (It took two years for me to completely bond with and love my second guide, for example. We ultimately had a successful and long relationship together, but I nearly gave up multiple times; it helped that I had incredibly patient and empathetic trainers who never took my misgivings, despair, and frustration personally.)
      You also must be comfortable with the idea of failure. In guide dog work for example, the failure rate can be very high; many teams will graduate, then for a number of reasons not work out. Matching a handler and dog is not an exact science, it is part science and part art. Dog matches don't always work out in class, even when you think you've made the best choices.
      I can't speak for other areas of service work, but as a guide dog instructor, you are also expected to travel and provide follow-up support for graduates as well as interview prospective applicants. It is a rewarding career but can require plenty of time on the road, so having a good support system is critical.
      Most service dog trainers have some kind of college degree, but the important thing is they have worked with and love people; volunteer get involved with something in the disabled community is a good starting place.
      If you are specifically interested in guide dog training, there is a book called Forward Together: An Inside Look At Guide Dog Training by Christie Bane that is worth reading. It is very long and technical, but it was written by a senior guide dog mobility instructor who now has over three decades of experience in the industry. You can find it on Kindle/Amazon.
      Other suggestions: Reach out to other service dog trainers, get to know a variety of service/guide dog teams, and if possible raise a service dog puppy.
      It isn't easy, but if you have the passion and determination, it can be a rewarding career. Good luck.

      @@marciapatt4428 I am glad you found it useful. Good luck. It is an extremely difficult area of work to get into, and I do not know if there are any guide dog schools where you live. It is one thing to read about it, though I am glad that you are interested (which is a good place to start). I will tell you that having spoken with many young instructors over the years and worked with them, many do leave because of burn out.. You really don't know if this is the right kind of work for you until you actually get into it. Do not just read about it. Get involved in the disabled community. It is not just about dog training, more about people training. The most critical part of a guide dog mobility instructor's job, for example, is making the right match between dog and person. The most well-trained dog can look like the worst dog if placed with the incorrect person.. One can be the best dog trainer, but not necessarily make an effective guide or service dog instructor. In her book, Christie Bane freely admits that she is an average dog trainer, but she loves this career because it is all about people. (You can look up her website, and email her if you are very serious.)
      Even if you ultimately do not become an instructor, there are still many ways to contribute to the service dog industry. Puppy raising, for example. That can be incredibly rewarding, and it is the hardest part of the dog training aspect because you are shaping a young dog to potentially be a future worker. But the wealth of experiences and lessons you will learn along the way are invaluable, not to mention there is an incredible community of people out there. I have had the pleasure of meeting and befriending many wonderful puppy raisers, some who have gone on to become trainers, many who are content to do what they do. I mean, who doesn't love cute little puppies?
