So true and so rare in filmmaking. Another example of this is ‘The Exorcist’(1973) Almost 50 years later and still the scariest movie ever made. The lack of a score trying to manipulate the audience in that movie adds to the psychological impact. The opposite of this is the movie ‘Se7en’ in which the ridiculously overdone score detracts from the atmosphere. Constantly reminding you that you’re watching a movie.
The way he makes the viewer uncomfortable in this scene is powerful in itself. Unbelievable performance from Johnny and impeccable writing. A roller-coaster of emotions in a matter of minutes followed by an even more uncomfortable laughter between all. Basically inferring that if you talk about this with anyone I’ll kill ya. I love how he did this for two reasons one to send the message to keep his mouth shut but also to stand up for Flemmi who he knew was upset about killing his girlfriends daughter and who didn’t want to be there and had just caught flak from Morris for not talking much.
The level of tension in this scene is incredible. I watched this movie in the theater and it was quiet during this particular scene I'm serious there wasn't a single solitary person in that theater that said a word including me. Johnny Depp was horrifying in every scene especially this one.
When I tell my friends and family about this movie, this is the scene I go to. The intensity, the death stare, the tension you can cut with a paper towel. Watching the scene you feel scared and intimated for the guy. Johnny's acting is A1 right here.
This is a good example why you should steer clear of mob like folks, or else you can’t EVER lose your guard when interacting with them. They truly do take a paranoid, ruthless approach to protecting THEIR interests and gain even so much as a simple lighthearted conversation can turn dangerous if not deadly very quick.
I had a similar feeling when I joined a friend who was getting some weed. I don't smoke and did not care for his weed. But I was like, what the hell, how bad can a weed dealer be. Oops we ended up in the shadiest motel room where they had piles of white powder and made strips with credit cards. I remember thinking everybody there seemed bat shit crazy. One guy had vibrating eyes. Another one was indulging in his fantasies about how he loved beating up people, while high. And my dumbass friend had such a big mouth. I was waiting for him to say something stupid that would get our ass kicked. He had almost screwed up when we got in there by saying the N-word, not realizing one of the dealers were black. Fortunately he had not heard him say it. I counted every second I was in there. Listening to every word said. Watching every emotion of on the people in the room. We got out fine. This was in the US. Later I lived in the Netherlands were pot is legal. That experience made me favor legalization. Nobody I knew who smoked pot in the Netherlands EVER got in contact with that sort of people. You buy your pot in the middle of downtown in a coffeeshop from some harmless looking hippie. You never get close to bad people. I don't want people to smoke pot. I saw a lot of bad effects from it. But those bad effects seemed to have gotten amplified in the US from it being illegal.
only problem is that this scene was played so much in trailers that it lost its luster in the movie,. btw,. am I the only one who tried garlic and soy on their steak after this?

well written scene and great performance by Johnny Depp and of course such a good movie
"Where's the wife?" - Johnny Depp
I love how he did this for two reasons one to send the message to keep his mouth shut but also to stand up for Flemmi who he knew was upset about killing his girlfriends daughter and who didn’t want to be there and had just caught flak from Morris for not talking much.
Depp was so terrifying in this shit that it was borderline a horror movie. Even the music kind of supports that concept.
He is so scarey in this scene. Not just some boogey man jumping out of the bushes scarey. Makes you believe he is a total nut case
That was unbelievable... he had me going all the way!
Mike Kollin He wasn't joking at all, though!
Joe Pesci: How am I funny?
Johnny Depp: you were just saying?
He was more scared of Whitey in this scene than he was of the Demogorgon in Stranger Things.
The level of tension in this scene is incredible. I watched this movie in the theater and it was quiet during this particular scene I'm serious there wasn't a single solitary person in that theater that said a word including me. Johnny Depp was horrifying in every scene especially this one.
Funny how quickly it turned into it’s a ‘family secret’ to ‘everyone knows the recipe’
Jonny Depp is the best actor I've ever seen.
Holy shit man that intense feeling you get just watching this scene alone DAMN!!! honestly whu didnt he get an oscar really???
only problem is that this scene was played so much in trailers that it lost its luster in the movie,. btw,. am I the only one who tried garlic and soy on their steak after this?
no lol
Jim M Yess I did
Jim M Agreed the trailer ruined the scene for me. I shouldn't have watched that trailer before I saw it. But the trailer was just so dam good.
+Charlie Myers
So was it good?
Jim M I always use that in my steak marinades lol
This and fear and loathings HST's character is his best work. EVER.
The easy answer was "Well shit, Jimmy, I consider you family. If I can't share a family secret with my family, what's the point of family?"
This scene is so intimidating and makes you really uncomfortable watching it. I'd put this up there with Waltz in inglorious Bastard. Depp played Bulger so well and did actually scare you everytime he was on screen.
"How am I funny?" Boston Edition. 😏
Depp was great in this scene, and the writing is fucking fantastic
I took a xanax pill after this scene.
😁😁👍

Scenes like this are so predictable but always great and effective at bringing so much tension.
i have a feeling he's not "fucking with him".
Brilliant scene... With a valid point!
This almost ranks up there with Joe Pesci's 'How am I funny?' scene for tense awkward put-ons. Awesome scene. I haven't even seen this movie yet but want to.
Him: well I consider you family that's why I told you.
This film, in it's entirety, isn't one of the best. But this scene (and especially Johnny Depp's performance) stole the show for sure.
Really not a bad film The more you watch it the better it gets in my opinion. It's like a biopic I don't know what people are expecting I guess they were expecting Goodfellas
I remember as a kid reading in the Boston Globe about "the Winter Hill Gang". Wicked pissah great movie!
most tense scene in a minute
