First time viewer here. I'm 66 and retiring in 2 months, 19 days. And, yes! I am counting. Love your tips and subscribed. Finene's Basement was the best. Mom would let me take a day off of school and take me shopping for back-to-school after we saw what everyone was wearing. Mom was smart and stylish. Lunch at the Cafe Marliave. Such wonderful memories. Miss the Basement, Marliave and mostly Mom. ❤

I'm 72, I tend to shop in independent stores, not chains. I absolutely cannot wear heels anymore 😢. I spend more on clothing now and buy just quality mid range - no fast fashion. I'm in Canada, many of the stores you mentioned are not in Canada. I also think it's really really important to have very nice glasses/ sunglasses and great bags.

Yes depending on which city/province you are in it can be very challenging to find clothes for anyone in the 50+ range. Seems to be lots of florals and oversized clothes and the stores we do have assume we all want to wear tunics and large prints and huge scarves with everything…. I tend to find some nice clothes when going to Florida or traveling. I hear you about the foot wear. I have found a very nice pair of white sketchers sneakers that I can do a lot of walking in that look good with most things. Looking for a sandal now 😅 as my go to have worn out

@@rosemarie9956 I'm in Calgary. There are some good independent stores like Something2Wear in the city, also Okotoks has some really good stores like Ginger Laurier and Fisher Crescent retail. I can almost always find something at those places. Where are you located?

    • @antoniaz
      @antoniaz 6 месяцев назад +3

I'm 73, in Toronto, and I love indie stores too. During the Covid lockdown, I spent a lot of time on eBay and thrifted, a a dozen pairs of kitten-heeled pointed toe pumps by Vionic. Those and platform-y wedges and low block and cowboy boot heels are my limit.
Here, there are so so so many, fortunately. But I've also online bought from stores in BC, AB, QC and NS. I try as much as possible to buy Canadian: Smythe, Mackage, Hiso, Danier, La Canadienne, Brave Leather etc.
Unfortunately, none of these are inexpensive, but they are quality and they last. I have leather trenchcoats from Danier I bought 20+ years ago which look like I just picked them up at some high-end store. In fact, I can produce many many pieces acquired over the years, including a Biba coat I bought in London in 1974!!! that look fresh and even on trend.
It pays to invest in good clothes that last. It's better to thrift, if you can, than to buy fast fashion crap.
As far as international, Nordstrom is once again shipping to Canada, yay!!! I also order from Sezane, Washlab Denim, White House Black Market, Saks and Nation Ltd.
After years and years of career dressing as a TV journalist and presenter, I find myself passing on my collection of tailored/fitted blazers, many bespoke, and going for denim and leather. I have an embarrasing number of cropped or peplum-ed denim jackets which suit my 5'2" hourglass frame.
I collect belts and bags. Accessories make an outfit. (I find that necklaces draw attention to a crepey neck and earrings to sagging jowls and double chins.
I sometimes suspct that some people think I dress "young" for my age, whatever that means. But I refuse to fall into the floral tunic and matching culottes trap that I see so many women our age give into. One can be both comfortable and stylish.
      NEVER GIVE UP!!!

I'm in my sixties and finally starting to figure out my style. I tend to shop at op shops (thrift shops) but yes it can be a challenge to find the gems. I also like to go into T K Max, Myer, Katies and Witchery . I started teaching myself to sew when I retired and learned quickly that's it's important to look on the inside of the garment. The way a garment is finished e.g. the types of seams used to sew it up etc, give really important information about the quality of the item. Also learning about the different fabric types and how this affect drape/fit etc has been so eye opening. I still go into stores and I'm now more confident about what I am looking at and for. Thanks Nada!

I was going to a store near by and they were very good at advising what to buy. Then for a yearly work type event where there is a party and long term prizes awarded. I bought a floral dress on line. This was a few years back. I wore it but then one day I looked at it and thought that looks like what SOMONE ON MAMA'S family would wear and gave it away. MAMA'S family was on the CAROL BURNET SHOW.

I grew up in Montreal and my mother sewed many of my clothes. They always fit impeccably and the shoes in Montreal were to die for. Unfortunately I moved away to frumpville and gained 60 lbs in my 40 and 50s. I have now shed 50 of those 60lbs and changed my style quite a lot, I will be moving from this extreme cold climate to a coastal environment in the next year and look forward to not wearing heavy winter boots and coats for 9 months of the year. BTW I sew most of my clothes and like the freedom it gives me in terms of fit, style and colour as well as fabric choices. Thank you Nada for this video.

Aaaaaagh: "Golden Years"! Nooooo! I'm too young for these to be my golden years! Maybe in another 20 years! Granted, I did not follow the path of most women (no children, no husband), but I'm still trying new things and looking for the next adventure. Health challenges? Yes, since my mid 30's! But you deal with it and move on! I don't have a go-to store; I am open to finding the perfect fit/fabric/quality wherever I can find it! Second hand, mid to higher end, but I'm definitely done with low quality shopping for my everyday items (except tees, as you mentioned!). And WOW, I have to say your 60's ladies are KILLING IT style wise! They are your most fashionable decade of ladies yet! Great tips!

Just this week I found your channel. I love it!! Shoes have always been hard to find, but now it is even harder. I am a 9 narrow and need shoes with a removable footbed for orthotics. . I need something I can wear for dressier occasions but can't wear heels anymore. I think finding affordable shoes is the hardest thing about being in the 60's . I love this time of life and I dress in casual clothes most of the time. However everyone needs something that can pass for dressier occasions sometimes, even if it is just a ballet flat.

At 65 & plus size, just finding cute clothes is a challenge since most stores don't carry extended sizes & you must order them online. You're basically paying for something just to try it on & then having to deal with returns. I find shoes & pants are the most challenging for me atm. With a large & full bust, tops & blouses can be as well. I only have 2 button up white blouses that actually fit. One is by Bespoke & I ordered it by size & cup size (I'm currently a G/H depending) It has a wide inset waistband & darts thru the bust area that give the girls more room without it becoming too big thru the shoulders & arms. It's kind of a peplum style. The other is a little longer with a nice rounded hem &has princess seaming to give it some curve & bust darts. I haven't seen many tops or dresses lately with darts, or any seaming for that matter. Clothing now relies on s-t-r-e-c-h instead of tailoring. Pants are challenging because I don't have a big hip to waist ratio. Never did. Misses sizes always seemed designed for women who were more pear shaped. Until I sized out & the rises got scandalously low, I shopped juniors for pants. They were cut better for me. Usually I end up with too much fabric in the crotch, seat & thighs that bunches up or they will fit too tight around the hip area & accentuate my hip dips & less than flat lower belly (thank you hysterctomy) Dresses I can find & have many I like. They are my summer staple (maxi) In the winter with tights & boots. Shoes/boots are challeging because of over pronation, pancake flat feet, medical orthotics that are quite thick (most shoes don't have the depth ) & a reconstructive foot & ankle surgery 20 yrs ago that left me with 1 foot smaller (about a half a size) & a permanently bad ankle that I still have to splint. I wear lace up ankle boots & hi top sneakers for the adjustabilty & ankle support. I often must use a cane or other mobility devices. Something I don't see mentioned often but is kind of critical is accessibily - zippers, buttons & jewelry being difficult with arthritic hands/fingers. This doesn't just happen with age, mobility issues & autoimmune disorders can happen at any age, but it's a little more common in our age group. It is awful to need help just getting dressed. I think that's part of why easy fit, pull on pants & tops & velcro sneakers become popular for certain people. Disability plays a big part in what you can wear comfortably & how easy it is to dress yourself without assistance. Anyone outside of the "norm" size wise or age wise or disabilty wise will have more obstacles finding clothes. Sharing info about what stores, brands & online resources is very helpful to others who might have the same challenges. I love the Closet Confidential FB group ❤ for this reason. And the ladies there are so kind & encouraging. It's agreat group to be a part of.

Theee years ago I decided to mellow my style a bit from the boho, rebel, slightly punk aesthetic to Coastal Grandma in the warmer months and French chic for cooler/cold weather. I can still add touches of my old style for spice-- say, a black moto jacket, an eyelet top, along with my flowy linen, silk scarves, my trench coat, well-fitting high-waisted jeans, marinieres, gsimple gold jewelry, etc. I love Old Navy and their jeans fit me perfectly. I've also gotten a great beige and white stiped button-down shirt, and a beige linen vest this year-- great prices (1/2 price sales!), good quality. I also thrift. Marks & Spencer's in the UK are a great store, good quality, reasonable prices, good return policy and they are very current and up-to-date. Favourite buys: Eva bootcut jeans (£25), Autograph straight leg jeans with lyocell (£49.50) for Parisian chic vibes. Latest buy: Everyday slouchy white t-shirt for just £9.50, it hangs so well, the material is great, it's a little more slouchy and so more current than the tight t-shirts I've always worn and look a bit dated now. I bought multiples of all of these, they're a great investment imo. Marks & Spencer's stock many other brands too.
For comfortable boots for my big feet, I love Imogen boots from Hobbs, elegant, chic and so comfortable. I've started wearing heels again and these are super comfy, I've also bought multiples. PS Linda looks amazing in that white dress and cool hair, love love love, what an inspiration!

And they have many pants that you can ask to be hemmed at your inseam for just a few dollars which is great for us vertically challenged women.

I’m over 40, with family in Montreal, and I shop at Simons there. They have a good house label called Contemporaine. They carry higher end labels like Hugo Boss and Isabelle Marant, that come on sale.
In Montreal, there is a Holt Renfrew that carries Prada, YSL, Bottega Veneta, etc.
I also shop at Jupon Pressé in Montreal for clothing. The female owners are about 50 years old. They stock Indi and Cold, Eve Gravel, and InWear. I shop at Intervalle for shoes. I have never shopped at Reitman’s and don’t recommend it.

I know quality and Lauren has good quality. I don't buy a lot, but those things are super looking. I'm a classic. I don't want to look like a teenager, instead look expensive. The style I relate to : ankle length pants and more "fitted" styles, not oversized clothes. Before I retired, I used to wear a knee length "pencil" skirt similar to the red skirt shown in your video. Now I don't have the lifestyle that warrants that type clothing. No midi/maxi length for me---my legs are one of my best assets.

I still have a terrible TERRIBLE habit of buying stuff "just because" it looks nice on me and then never wearing it. I have a Staud dress I paid $350 bought over a month ago and still haven't worn it. Bought 2 more dresses since then and haven't worn them either. I wish I could stop, it's an addiction. :-( And these are summer dresses and I'm in Canada so as of today I have 12 weeks to wear them and that's it! I work from home why am I still buying this stuff? Oh yeah, cause it's pretty. Le sigh. I feel like I should start going into the office more just so I can wear some of this stuff.

I haven't heard of all the stores you mentioned but absolutely CANNOT afford stores like Macy's, Nordstrom or Nordstrom Rack, Kohl's, Chico's.
I can only afford Wal-Mart and some Target, but....in those stores you really are limited for clothes and styles for those of us over 60. Many styles at
Wal-Mart are for very young ladies.
I also shop at thrift stores because you can sometimes find nice clothes for women over 60 but does take time to sort through all the racks to find some nice pieces. Of course, affordable compared to buying new.
I'm also only 5' 1" and hard to find pants that fit in length- always too long and cannot afford alterations that charge way too much!
Wear Size 5 or 5 1/2 size shoes and VERY hard to find nice shoes in those
sizes, at ANY store. Very limited to find that size, new or at thrift stores.

I added a few more comments to my post about having problems with finding pants that fit in length. I need about 25 " inseam andcan't afford to pay for alternations. Also, due to my small size shoe, 5 or 5 1/2 , so hard to find much selection. Macy's have that size, maybe more then other stores but absolutely cannot afford to buy shoes at Macy's. I am a curvy petite. I have a few shift and fit and flare dresses. They are ancient but when I see the dresses with a million details and crrazy large prints I just keep wearing what I have. I don't know where I can find skirts without a wide waistband. I usually fold the waistband under the skirt, ( better look for me but bulky).
I shop all over, and yes, it is harder to find petite clothing even in Ann Taylor, etc. They all seem to be on the bandwagon catering to younger women. Even stores catering to petite sizes have styles more appropriate to the younger woman.
Yes, in an ocean of clothing, I am lucky to find one item. Very frustraiting and depressing.
