They do this to a lot of movies and shows because they want us to reject the old. That's a key point to liberalism. To destroy the old. It's to create stability. We had to sacrifice happiness, or high art. In liberalism you always sacrifice high art, in the name of happiness. They want a stable society. It doesn't matter how AWFUL the new is. When something is still appealing like Star Wars or Scooby-Doo they have to change it to make it new. So that you forget the old, and accept the new.

Which self inserts themselves isn't even something that singularly Mindy Khaling does, what breaks my heart is that there is so much wrong with media/behind the scenes productions that when the self inserts seem like a cry for help, no one treats it like the real problem it really is bc people tried to express themselves through metaphors instead of calling out the industry. Mindy Khaling worked really hard then got labeled as a diversity hire, it's totally understandable that she's frustrated and trying to shine lights on problems shes been highlighting for years, after so long, shes probably running out of ideas for how to feel heard & seen at this point. 🥺🥺🥺

I’m a brown South East Asian. You can side-eye me for thinking that already established characters should not be race swapped. It feels like tokenism. It feels like I’m being pandered to, but in a wrong way. I want representation to be on original characters that can stand on their own two feet without the backing of a previous character. It’s frustrating that I’m being told that a brown person can’t hold themselves up without a franchise behind them.

Scooby-Doo is a malleable enough franchise to where I think they can change just about anything and make it work, though I'm not against the idea of swapping skin tones in general. The is issue is totally that almost no one can do it without making it feel pandering. Like if you're going to do representation, DO REPRESENTATION. And the best representation doesn't have a giant neon sign pointing to itself saying "Look what I did~!"

I don't like race swapping solely because it's someone else's character who was made the way they are. But I wouldn't have been opposed to new POC characters being added. Although it's clear Mindy just wanted to self insert and used Scooby Doo characters for this.

    • @angiadcock8196

Race swapping in animation always feels really insincere to me. Like it’s just adding characters of color just to say you have them. This particular instance feels like they just wanted to make a bunch of “white people be like…” jokes. If this had been live action and Mindy had read for the part and the producers had felt like she was simply the best fit for bringing Velma to life then it would feel way more like an honest attempt at inclusivity rather than virtue signaling.

But if all she does is write them as unpopular nerds/losers or someone who dislikes their own culture then what kind of story is she telling to her audience? And when those Indian characters always seem to need the attention or approval of a white man?
Edit: I do want to say that just bc she’s the one of the only Indian voices in media does not mean she has to be a spokesperson or activist, and it doesn’t mean she has to represent all of the Indian experience. However, it does mean that any internalised racism she struggles with that gets projected onto her characters is something that needs to be addressed.

I’ve actually seen the show and the criticism I’m seeing a lot that just doesn’t make sense is that people are saying that making Shaggy black is enforcing the “black stoner” stereotype. Which makes it obvious to me that people haven’t actually watched the show. It’s made very clear in the show that Norville doesn’t participate in recreational drug use and is actually very against it. When watching the show, people need to realize that even though some of the characters might have the same names or dress the same as the original Scooby Doo characters, these characters are NOT the Scooby Doo characters. They all have completely different personalities and interests and flaws to the original Scooby Doo gang. I think if people watch with that mindset, they’d be a lot more open minded when watching. That being said, the dialogue is… interesting. It makes all the characters seem annoying and horrible, at best boring and shallow. They don’t feel realistic at all. While I understand it’s a cartoon and things are more dramatized for effect, there still needs to be some type of human connection to pull the audience in. And for this show, there just isn’t. I feel nothing for any of the characters. I can’t even hate them because I just don’t care enough. With all that being said, I’m going to at least finish the season. I want to see what they do with the plot. It’s not entirely captivating since the characters can overshadow it, but I think the premise could be way more appealing in a different context. I want to see if I can actually look forward to seeing what happens next. I would say, don’t bash it til you’ve seen it. It’s problematic at times and just misguided in some ways but I think if it was done differently in any capacity, it could’ve really been something. I want to see if it can be redeemed by the end of the first season.

Norvell is Shaggys name is the old show, its mentionedback in the 1968 first season, and a couple of times in the 1980s, but it was rarely used. Peoplestarted calling him Shaggy at Woodstock, accordingto the original cannon and he just used that after. Its actually a good nod to a not well known fact about Shaggy, that they are using his real name.
Plus Gigi is a character from the 1980s, who only appears a few times. She was a hippie who Shaggy was dating in the 1980s episodes. So it's nice to see them bring in some old not well known side characters as well.
The show is full of endless Easter egg nods to the past like that. I like that they did that.
And something i haven't seen any youtuber mention yet, is Scooby-Doo is in fact in every episode. You have to play Where's Waldo to find him, hidden as an easter egg in the background, but so far, I've found him in all the first 6 episodes.
And I like the people of colour and LGBTQAI additions. If you go back to an old interview from the 1980s writers, they said they wanted it to be Velma likes Daphne, Daphne likes Fred, Fred like Shaggy, and Shaggy was asexul, so all the characters were originally intended to be LGBTQAI but TV producers wouldn't allow it. So, I'm glad to see that original intent is finally being allowed.
For the most part, I actually like the show. I just don't like the crass over sexualization of minors that it is also doing.

its a really common trend for movies, shows, music and video games to try and appeal to everyone. when you do that, at best, you'll have an o.k., forgettable product for a large audience. but if you have a target audience, then you actually have a chance at making something people will love. something that can have a real impact. but that's a risk and the majority of these studios are scared to take risks.

    • @dawgggosaur
      @dawgggosaur Год назад +6

@@getdownonit8753 See, the problem with this argument is that it can be used for whitewashing as well. There are instances when anime gets a live action and they cast a white person for the main character (ex. Ghost In The Shell, Death Note, etc.) even though the character is originally Asian. So imo, the “race isn’t tied to the story” argument isn’t a strong argument because it can be used to “justify” whitewashing that happens to POC characters whose races don’t impact the story.
T1J has a video called “Should Black Actors Play White Roles?” which dives into this topic more. Changing the race of a white character does not have the impact that whitewashing a POC character has. Western media is dominated by white characters so changing their race to POC would not really impact “white representation” overall. Meanwhile whitewashing a POC character would take away from the minimalistic POC representation that exists. That’s the real problem imo and not the fact that “race doesn’t impact the story”.

I’m black personally so I cannot speak on the Indian representation bc that does not involve me but what I will say is y’all have to remember how Mindy grew up…she was NEVER treated or seen as beautiful growing up and it was only til she got older she realized. And we see in a lot of shows these characters getting bad representation or not loving themselves bc of their race…Now let’s connect how mindy grew up…FAMILIAR RIGHT? Thing is, its not so much "they changed it so its sucks" , or race lifts that make this so hateable with the people who DON'T enjoy being outraged at perceived wokeism in modern pop culture.
It, that this is more of a mean spirited joke AT Scooby Do fan's expense, or at least its for people who watched Scooby as kids, vaguely remember it and its idiosyncratic silliness but are not fans as such so can laugh at the "adult" swipes at it.
If someone were a genuine fan, or has genuine affection for Scooby Doo this evisceration of the characters, and premise mixed would be horrible to see.
Its also shocking how unlikeable Velma is, and as the show progresses she gets worse. Even less sympathetic becoming petty, manipulative, deceitful, possessive and petulant. Whereas Daphne (and to a lesser degree Norvill, and to a tiny one Fred) become more sympathetic, or even likeable.
Lastly the race thing. Looking at the show, not really knowing who the actors are and the art style, its quite far in that I learned Velma was asian not black and Daphne I would never have guessed she was asian if not for reviews. I mean the art style offers no clue, at least not one I noticed.

I think that the target audience is Mindy Kaling.

Very solid analysis. I would say personally the mystery itself kept me entertained and I know some people hate the constant references to Scooby-Doo but I enjoyed them and I also enjoyed the other references to other hana barbara shows. I also didn't hate the self-referential humor and the show kind of just sets up my expectations for it in the first two episodes. So I guess because I don't expect it to be anything different than that, it doesn't piss me off
