      Well, that's not really his point. He thinks that Kratos before the reboot is more interesting because that version kicks ass. You can have a humanized Kratos without going for the "responsible adult" angle. After all, that comment about God of War III was made in comparison to the first game, which had a Kratos that was still angry and childish, but also had a clear motivation, which helped to somewhat humanize him.

      A 24-minute serious review from some guy who's self-absorbed enough to make a 24-minute serious review vs a five minutes review from a comedy writer/producer whose entire schtick, and indeed job established over a decade ago, is to be irreverent and critical about even the most excellent games. Croshaw's product is comedy, Caddicarus' product is talking about games, and I've never been on board with people having an actual career based on that. Croshaw is an exception because he could be pointing out the flaws in basically anything and still be funny, whereas Caddicarus would be unlikely to draw attention doing the same thing. He's just... another one of those games reviewers.

    I think the close camera is a tradeoff to allow for the type of graphics the game has. If you could pull the camera further back, there would be more to render. It works ok for the most part in God of War 4 EXCEPT when you are surrounded by enemies and you physically can't see them. Its especially frustrating when you take on the optional challenges of completing fights without taking any damage.

    the funny thing about it is that there are 2 cuts over the whole game... you never leave kratos' bum for 15+ hours of gameplay with a ton of cutscenes (well, you do leave his bum, but not too quickly)
    also: dlc? they were very obviously going for a sequel (ok, i know, hindsight bias and everything, but i already thought that at the time)

So why are you expecting to kill Odin or Thor in the first game. Zeus didn't appear either in God Of War only a glowing face and as a gravedigger. And Yathzee thinks there is going to be DLC hahahah how funny all of that is for the sequel.

      In God of War 1 you save Athens and kill Ares, completing both Kratos' personal vendetta against the God of War and his redemption quest for the Olympian Gods in the process. Everything in that game was building up to the resolution of that conflict and Ares as an antagonist was a rogue-god serving his own interests. Honestly, with the exception of God of War 2 and 3, all the games in the franchise so far have focused on telling a selfcontained stories first and foremost, barely hinting at a larger overarching narrative of brooding conflicts between Kratos and entities he is working for here and there.
      In this new God of War it's obvious from the start, that the game's main antagonist Baldur is nothing but a middle-man, with game constantly reminding us how Odin and Thor are the true villains and sources of conflict behind him and the cliffhanger at the very end only serves the purpose of further rubbing it in our faces how badly the actual conflict of the story is left unresolved by the end.
      Also you forgot Pandora's Guardian and Medusa were also boss-battles in the first game, even if the latter was more of a mini-boss type of deal. Granted, it doesn't really take anything away from your point, but just thought I'd mention it.

      God of War 1 NEVER built up the other gods as villains. Ares was your one goal and that's it. That changed with 2. My primary issue with the game having played the previous installments was the cutscenes. There a numerous long cutscenes in the game where Kratos is fighting people that are framed perfectly for the player to be mashing buttons like in the old games, but instead there are no prompts and you just kind of watch it happen. I'm not saying QTEs are great gameplay, but their addition in the more cinematic fights at least gave you the feeling of some input. I understand that bright glowing "PRESS TRIANGLE TO TEAR OFF HELIOS' HEAD!!" wouldn't be appropriate for the tone this game's trying to set, but being able to literally just set the controller down while Kratos flies through the air punching a dude leaves me feeling detached from what should be the most memorable parts of the game.
    Also, I liked the combat. You don't do as much crazy stuff as you used to, but the axe feels very weighty and satisfying to kill things with, and I don't think the over abundance of options is a bad thing. Very quickly I was so flooded with xp I just bought every upgrade, and sort of discovered them by experimenting in combat. It'd be worse if xp was really hard to come by and you had to choose upgrades wisely, but you really don't.

    While I agree that the story could have been better written, and that the open world busywork tends to bog it down more than enhance it, the thought of a maturer, less intentionally violent Kratos is an interesting idea to explore.
    If we're going to get continuations of stories that we thought to have ended over a decade ago, then the characters in those stories should mature and change in meaningful ways. And Kratos doing literally everything he can in order to save his son from living the same life he led as a god is definitely a meaningful and drastic change to his character. It's also one that could have been better executed.

    • @ASR-Ansori
      @ASR-Ansori 2 года назад +5

      He was older and debatably wiser, but I wouldn't say more mature (the story isn't really any deeper than GoW1's). Most of what Kratos does in the game isn't too different from what he's done in the original series. I mean, interacting with children, daughter and surrogate daughter included, in a bunch of ways is something we've seen a few times as well.

    It's funny about the close-in RE4-style camera as one of Yahtzee's friends pointed out when he did the post-ZP stream of God of Phwoar, that it was clearly chosen since it would be easier to render the beautiful environments that would be requisite to sell people on buying a PS4 than the traditional zoomed-out camera seen in previous games in the series (and in the games that a decade ago were trying to imitate GoW's style).

All the 8 damage types and determining which one I should technically be using is not at all simplistic, and that's not even factoring in the large amount of different spell effects.
      And that's just combat. There's no way this dude wants to read the dense narrative in these games, even if there is more voice acting than before.

    • @arcanethink
      @arcanethink 6 лет назад +1

      You're not the only one who has played them. I didn't even skip through the text , read everything because the writing was immersive. The combat log is only there for occasional viewing for accessing the situation better , the combat system is definitely amazing and deep but it can be skipped by playing on easy or storyteller difficulty.
      This time the combat is more streamlined , more balanced and the game is fully voiced so... If not a 100% , there is a worthwhile chance of him liking it a lot. There's also the fact that he has never played any rich CRPG before. Maybe it'll take him by surprise?

    • @RebirthCrusader90

      Um, well, mentioning that I played Obsidian's other RPGs in no way implies that other people haven't. I mostly mentioned that to clarify that I enjoy their games. What I was getting at is even after playing 3 of their games, there are still aspects of optimizing damage that I still don't fully utilize because of the variety of different damage types and other mechanics that affect that. Yahtzee complained in this very video that God of War has complicated attacks that he's never going to bother using. A CRPG is literally all about that.

    Of all the characters to get this sort of "responsible dad" makeover, Kratos is the one that I buy the least. His entire existence in the Greek God of War games was defined by his excessive violence and rage, to the point that, at the end of God of War 3, he punched Zeus so many times that Zeus' blood completely obscured his vision, then killed himself with a very big sword just to spite the ghost of Athena (still not sure how he got over that). And then next time we see him, he's...not going ballistic over the death of his wife. Which is just a startling shift in personality for a guy whose announced motivation in the Greek games was...the death of his wife and child.

    I'm sorry but have we played different games? You riff on how Kratos teaches his kid morals and suddenly doesn't want to kill anyone, but he just doesn't want his kid to die. He's teaching his kid how to murder and the first hour of the game shows Kratos finding Atreus incapable of murdering quite efficiently enough. He tells the kid to block out his emotions and don't feel sorry for his enemies. I'm not sure how he's seen the light or whatever, he just wants Atreus to not-die.

    Finally someone on the internet that shares my opinion on this game, and it also happens to be my favorite reviewer ever. That _almost_ makes up for having to listen to everybody else praise it all the time.

      Is there anyone else? If only I had a moderately popular RUclips channel because I have a LOT to say about this game and what it means for the future of gaming, oh well.
