I actually have the opposite problem: I completely forget Great Runes even exist like 90% of the time. Then I'll randomly get stuck on a boss and pop it, crush the boss with the bonus, think "Wow these are strong, I should use them more often" and promptly forget about them again.
I live literally gotten through minimum 80% of the game and haven’t even ACTIVATED half of the freakin things. Or any of them barring rennala’s for that matter…
I think I only ever tried a Rune for Mohg and Malenia. And it was Godrick's Rune because it was the easiest one to find. I unlocked Morgott's Rune but I couldn't even find Rykard or Radhan's in the open world.
@@leithaziz2716 It a bitch, it's the tower in northern Caelid, you have to do this BS platforming on the outside of the the tower to get to inside. It's easily the strongest Rune, but the game makes you work for it.
Yeah the fact that they depend on a rare consumable just breaks the deal for me. I say this having like 180 rune arcs hoarded in NG+3 lol, and I STILL farm the rats whenever I test out new setups on the Omens in the Leyndell sewers. It's fun to pop the rune and slap on a talisman to test drive a few weapons and skills above your pay grade, but it's just that, a fun little feature. And I'm still reloading my save state to get my one arc back to add to the gigantic pile I'll never use.
I have 300+ hours and have never once used a great rune. nor have I needed to. probably didn’t even know HOW to use them let alone the fact they even did anything until after 100+ hours.
The dependency you might have of Godrick's Great Rune is pretty fitting thematically
If you depend too much on it, it'll start to feel like you're grasping for power much like Godrick was
But its usless once you get all stats above 95
If you manage to get all stats above 95 you shouldn't need great runes at all

I feel like i always just use Godrick's, because I'm a little damage goblin and seeing my weapom deal seven more damage makes a little person in my brain happy.

Same yeah but a lot of my strength builds damage relies on Lions claw and stance breaks so just being able to both use that more, AND wail on the boss for a longer period of time results in Radahn having way Higher damage than Godricks for me :>

The final kick in the teeth for Malenia's rune is that... Well, you get it by defeating _Malenia,_ a boss that you will no doubt save for the very end of the game, long after you've done everything you need to, and just in time for it to _not_ carry over to NG+.
Don't tell me Great Runes don't carry over in NG+...

In actuality I am okay with her Great Rune being horrible, it would suck to have an amazing great rune only to have nobody to actually utilize it or at least not many enemies.
@@MrSlashblade hard disagree, a well-balanced version of this rune would've been very fun to mess around with. Had they given Malenia's rune a "cheesier" power (such as higher item discovery AND better rune drops alike), it would've still very much had a place in endgame areas. Players would've defeated the strongest boss in the entire game by that time, so not everybody would abuse it to overlevel their characters anyway
@@weebto I mean okay the discovery increases let’s just say immensely. What is the purpose after one run through? You’ll have an over abundance of weapons, over abundance of outfits, over abundance of rune arcs, that level of “cheese” will only be good for the first play through and nothing more. I don’t think the best option is to take away the identity of fromsoft gsmes by making your character OP. Even the rune drop increases will be obsolete since the meta is 120-150

Also me: has no idea what most of them do while hoarding 50+ rune arcs
You can actually farm any kind of rat for them, although it’s rare and tedious

For the Malenia Great Rune, I have a good experience pairing it with the Ghiza's Wheel because:
1. It's considered a heavy weapon, thus more heal per hit from the rune
2. The multi hit R2 attacks are counted as multiple heavy attacks by the rune, so you can recover a good chunk of HP back with it
3. The R2 has colossal weapon superarmor so it excels in trading hits

I forgot Rennala’s counted, but since it does it is actually my favorite. I love re specing my character. I went up to max new game and was using every larval tear available on each play through just to see how many different builds I could achieve and had a lot of fun lol
Rennala's is weird, though, because functionally it doesn't actually unlock Rebirth, in that there's no situation in which Rebirth is gated behind access to the Great Rune Of The Unborn. Rennala's rune basically gives you access to a service...that you can only access by defeating Rennala, at which point you will receive said rune. Gameplay wise, it's useless.

Morgott's at 50+ Vigor lets you live through anything, even Malenia's flower slam. It's amazing.

Godrick's rune is also a pain if you frequently partake in jolly cooperation. For those who don't do co-op, you don't keep the effect of your tune when summoned by someone else. Those five points in endurance matter. Suddenly, I'm in someone else's world and going "Wait, why am I fat rolling?" It's even worse when you get summoned for a boss and you're left scrambling mid fight, trying to equip lighter armor.

God that happened to me in PVP the other day when I tried it out for the first time. I was switching Tailsman's around tho and got one that got rid of some of my endurance, so then I started fat rolling in pvp and promptly died while probably looking like a fool lol

I do love that Godrick's Great Rune is basically one of the best for a lot of the game especially the first half, placed in the perfect spot as generally your first great Rune to help you out.

I find it so weird that even though the Great Rune system gives you a far more powerful boost than the Embers did in DS3, but I could count on one hand the amount of times I've used one. I always used embers for the difficult fights in DS3 but the only time I've ever used a Great Rune was twice during the Godfrey fight when I first discovered how Great Runes worked...
My thing was that Embers at least felt easier to find than Rune Arcs, though admittedly that could just be me. I could find a couple extra Embers with a little grinding, but the drop rates on Rune Arcs from rats in this game are so abysmally low I'd rather fight without rune arcs than farm them (curious how rats always carry Humanity-type items and consumable currency in every game)
For me a big one was just that you don’t get a rune arc activation after beating a boss like you do with embers
I found Embers so usefull. They quickly became my favorite "Humanity" type resource (Humanity is more versatile since you can store several and they had an effect on weapons like Chaos Infusions, but I still prefer Embers cause of the extra health and automatic refill on boss defeat which made it more convinient). If you were unembered and beat a boss you'd be put in Ember mode, which was a nice reward. And just like with Humanity, if I ran out of estus they were a nice emergency refill.
The thing is they are usually hard or totally out of the way to unlock and although the bonuses are nice, if you defeated a boss for example and used one, you probably didn't needed them
@@BlackDT This is definitely the reason embers are more notable. The game forces you into embered state so that it'll be more noticable when you play without it. Activating a great rune feels like an optional buff, while being unembered feels like a penalty, kinda like demons' souls soul form.
Killing bosses should've activated your great rune, like whatever DS3 did. I'd prefer if all bosses did so, giving you an added reason to engage in side content, but idk how much that would make sense lore-wise.
Or at least also give you a rune arc. All the bosses in DS1 dropped humanities from what I understand.

I think at least Shardbeareres activating the great rune would make sense. Not sure about the rest of the bosses.

Honestly, your explanation for over reliance on Godrick's great rune perfectly explained my experience and subsequent issue with it. So kudos.
Ive thought what Ranni's great rune would be if she hadn't cast hers aside. And I think her rune would've been a 25% increase to FP, similar to Morgotts 25% increase to HP
Or a 15% increase to FP and INT like Radahn’s great rune
Considering Miquella was cursed with eternal youth, it would be fitting for his rune to be a 25% increase to stamina too

@@glorytoukraine5524if it used the percentile mechanic from Morgott's rune instead of the flat increase from godrick it'd be on par with Rykards in terms of power, but still niche like they want the runes to be it seems.
One thing I still find useful about Godricks is that it is rather handy for item farming. Stack it with the silver scarab, mimic tear mask, and Marikas sore seal, along with silver pickled fowl foot and you got lots of additional arcane and item discovery.
the malenia rune was made to use whit the water flow in her katana, you can upgrade your poise and damage whit some charms and simply spam the waterflow while making huge dps and healing yourself like malenia do

I really liked how the Convergence handles great runes, you get them immediately after defeating their respective bosses and it gives a proper, useful benefit. I wish the base game handled it like that as well.

I feel the opposite for a lot of them tbh, like Mogh's is borderline OP with how good it is but then you look at Morgott's and it's literally like +5 mind, same with Radahn's and End. The others I feel are pretty balanced but those two stick out like a sore thumb for me.
The only two I ever use are Morgott's and Radahn's. Mostly just Morgott's because I can't be bothered to go over to the tower for Radahn's.
Radahn's tower was a pain to get to and into

The developers greatly favored lore over gameplay when designing Malenia's great rune to illustrate that she is not carried by it.

@@Rayendac But that doesnt make sense, she regens health on every hit with the player(s) and spirit ashes regardless of the time between she was hit and she hits back. The rune we are given doesnt even operate within her lore justification nor her mechanics we see in the battle.

Half the great runes are roughly equal or superior to what the boss gets out of them and the other half are glorified pool toys.

Good video! It really is so disappointing that great runes don’t carry over, but ig it’s a relief the only ones that are effected by this are garbo anyway (malenia and mohg kinda)
Also, I did find out that Malenia’s runes’ rally instantly fills up with ripostes and backstabs like the visceral attacks in bloodborne which is cool ig, tho as a strength build it fucking blows, and I’m surprised it seems to even suck for dex builds. Should not have a penalty at all imo.
My favs have always been Morgotts’ and Rykards’, usually swapping em out for boss encounters and field encounters. And I 100% agree about the becoming dependent on Godrick’s rune, that shit happened to me in DS3 with the rings and I’ve rejected stat boosting shit since, unless I’m doing something like a raw strength build or have nothing better.
Though knowing that Radahns’ gets better as your stats do makes me want to try it.
Imo I’d swap Morgotts’ for 2nd place and Godricks’ for 3rd if I made a list, I feel like the point you get Morgotts is just perfect; right at the mid game where you begin unlocking the harder shit, but not late enough that you’ve already explored the majority of the world and conquered most the bosses.
Imma be real, the outro for this one is probably one of the best for the series since it’s both beautiful/aesthetically pleasing, but also really god damn funny
A real problem with great runes is that you get them from beating the boss they are assigned to. However they reset upon entering new game plus. So if you were say using Rykard's for whatever reason, and entered new game plus you lost the rune and likely have to do a bunch of tedious shit to get it back. This is why making Radahn's and Godrick's great runes the most useful is sort of a backhanded compliment. Because you can acquire them so early in your playthrough that you'll not even bother with the other 5 runes. Especially since most of them are just adjusting health.
Fun fact: the Serpent God's curved sword stacks with Rycard's rune, Camieo, and Blasphemous Blade

Aside from the rarity of Great Runes compared to Embers and Humanity from prior Souls games, I think needing to reach and then complete a specific tower in order to get the benefits of said Rune might not have been the best choice. And that's not factoring in the complications when it comes to simply finding the towers. I think unlocking the Runes when said boss is defeated would have been enough.
Personally, the towers add a layer of anticipation and mysticism to it. A cool factor. Also, the towers are among the easiest things to find in the whole game. The only structure taller than the towers is the Erdtree and minor Erdtrees. My issue is that, apart from Godrick's rune for early game, all the Great Rune effects are underwhelming. This combined with the rarity of Rune Arcs in solo play, makes them not worth using.
@@krishnansubramoni7801 That only works on the 1st playthrough. It becomes tedious and annoying with subsequent NG+s. Currently on NG+3 and I've stopped using all but Godrick's and Rahdan's runes. Having to treat the Great Runes like I got them from a cell phone company lost its allure very quickly.

godrick's great rune, both sore seals, pearldrake +2, greatshield talisman, golden vow and protection of the erdtree. plus 5 stats in every category with minimal repercussions. I tested it and the defense debuffs from the seals get largely negated by sacrificing the other 2 slots for defense, as well as using faith buffs for extra defense. protection of the erdtree (I think that's what it's called) protects against everything but physical resistances so that's why golden vow is also important.
I was finally here for the release of one of these! Truly a historic moment.

I have actually never once used a Great Rune. I seemed fine without them and assumed they were short temporary buffs that I've never wanted to deal with, so I've just never touched them before.

I find Radahn's Great Rune to be the best option In general, a good boost to HP, SP and Stamina.
One thing Godrick's Great Rune has going for it in the endgame, is 10 Holy Defense if your Arcane is 15 or lower. Which doesn't seem like much, but it's actually competitive with what you can get out of armour.
Cool video! Such a strangely implemented system. Some cool buffs but tying them to a rare consumable just made using them feel a little cheap and risky when I want these runes taken from the demigods to give me a real sense of power. I'm definitely just a little masochistic with these games and I enjoy first playthroughs where I use as few features that feel like crutches (to me) as possible, but being able to run out of rune arcs and have that crutch taken AWAY makes them even less appealing. A smaller permanent effect or some kind of renewal on death would have made them feel much less like an optional crutch and much more integral to the gameplay.
I loved this video. I've been weighing radahns and morgotts great runes between each other in late game, and this video was a great resource to proofread my ideas.
As someone who has never used a great rune before (because limited resources are my bane) this was a very interesting video. If I ever work up the courage to use them I'm sure I'll keep this in mind.

I- i didnt know rune arcs where mandatory to activate the great runes. I just assumed there would be an weaker effect if not used. How was I this stupid?!😂 I even wondered why Rykard and Malenias runes didn't work...
rykards great rune, taker's cameo, taker's flames, serpten god's curved sword in left slot, and if you want you can use erdtree blessing and godskin swaddling cloth. For physick, you can use maximum hp and hp regen or use the whorl tear in place for one of those instead. for alternatives, there is the blessed dew talisman and that one shield I never remember the name of that regens hp when equipped.
Rykard's Great Rune has become my go-to Great Rune to use. Aside from using Taker's Cameo to up the healing from each kill, I've also got the +1 Dragoncrest Shield Talisman to reduce damage and the Crimson Seed Talisman to negate the flask debuff from using Black Flame's Protection. I plan to throw in the Godskin Swaddling Cloth so I can get some extra healing while wailing on enemies.
I like you ranking this useless shit, not only is it something to watch, but it's also useful for me, because I never read what the great runes did

So this was my first Souls game and a seasoned friend decided to console multiplayer it together. Cue me going Ice rapier split mage build with a splash of whip for 'spice'. My stats were always confused... Anyway, I apparently impress him after 1 trying Agheel (bless that whip) and he says we should do the "secret stuff". We proceed to do ALL of Rhanni's questline up to re-fighting that damn dragon. He then asks me which rune I'm using because we just keep dying to it...
"...Which what?"

I am then yelled at, educated, and praised all in the next hour~ by two grown men who have gone complete "Unga-bunga brain" at my willpower, persistence, and dumb luck. I thought runes arcs were a currency for a vender I hadn't found yet...

I decided to not use that rune anymore because I always ended up being in heavy roll after death.
It only makes sense that after ranking the great runes dropped from bosses, he would rank the rememberances.

As someone who is too lazy (or forgetful) to even see how many points godrick’s rune gives you and almost never remembers to use any of them, this helped more than you can possibly know. Thank you.

Ironically, shooting summer into the sun only makes it sound hotter.
"so much so that you've forgotten what playing without a rune arc is even like" is such a funny sentence because it's 2 years later and I'm only just for the first time consistently using rune arcs in a playthrough. in my first solo runs I just found they felt too uncommon or inconvenient to collect, activating great runes was often kind of a chore, and the game was generous with level scaling enough that I never felt the need to bother. Plus killing bosses doesn't automatically rune arc like it did with ember/humanity in past games, so my primary source of being "buffed" after a boss is gone in this game, so I never ended up using rune arcs in co-op runs either.
I've never really felt handicapped without them, and now that I'm using them in my current run, it feels like the game isn't even balanced around them very well; my health pool is fucking colossal at 55 vigor and I haven't even fought morgott yet, who I'm sure is going to hit me approximately as many times as the moon has been struck by asteroids, and I'm not going to care because I have the vitality of the sun.
Is literally just him spamming runes when he died. I pop a rune like 3-4 times per run lol.
If you want the rally mechanic from Malenia’s rune just use the godskin swaddling cloth and jump attack with curved swords or twinblades. This way you can infinitely recover hp without being hit
Once I got to ng+6 I started using morgotts just because I had already leveled my other stats up to what I wanted and figured it was time to get that hp ridiculously high
Fun fact: I’m 99% certain “blood loss in vicinity” buffs activate upon blood loss, and after that it just has a set cooldown time before it wears off. Like you could leave the area and still have the buff for a little bit. It doesn’t only stay activated if there’s a bleeding enemy in your general vicinity. Try equipping the LOB exultation, and watch when the buff activates. Then leave the area and see how long it lasts before disappearing.
The getting too used to it part is true for Marika scarseal and radagons scar/soreseal
You can get them at the start of the game, and personally, I've never taken it off, cause I rely on the +3 faith for spell requirements and I need the soreseal to light roll while power stancing.
Basically used this combo plus arsenal charm for 95% of the game.
Tha rune arc dependancy you were talking about, i've experienced.
It's why I don't use rune arcs that much at all, most of the time just when I get stuck on a boss.

I barely used great runes because of the limited number of rune arcs. I spent my entire first playthrough using it only twice. Now I have well over 40 rune arcs. But I'm also running through just about everything pretty easily with both my strength at 90 and dex at 85 and using the bloodhound fang, which scales pretty well with both.
I've gotten to the point in ER I don't actually use great runes, or even equip them. I don't bother restoring them either unless I had some ulterior motive, like getting a certain greatsword.
I never used them, and when I do, I immediately die in the most stupid way possible, like misjudging a height or deciding to challenge a crayfish
10:15 had this reliance issue on first playthrough and then hit the wall of rada into elden beast and that's when I finally use rennalas rebirth function and honestly the amount of times I use great runes now is next to never unless I'm really having a rough time
Pretty much entirely agree with this list. My only change is Unborn rune automatically gets #1 for me because I just have to try every build in these game at least once, and they've never made it easier to do that than in Elden Ring. Yeah it's more a key item than anything but it lets me live my dreams so that counts for something lol.
I didn't know how much I don't know about elden ring. Not only i just found out how to activate the great runes (holy towers) and to equip them now i know rune arcs also play a part, i swear my main strategy is "hit it until it dies"

While I get the runes all have abilities that benefit gameplay and are somewhat reminiscent of their origin bosses it would be cool if they all offered a little more flavour to them.
Godrick's whole thing is grafting himself with fallen warriors to increase his strength, his rune reflects that to an extent by boosting our stats, I feel it could be better if it based it's buff on the amount of kills you make between site of grace visits or the total amount of runes you hold up to a point so there is risk/reward that would be steadily more beneficial the later into the game you go.
Mohg is all about the blood magic and that formless mother being his rune is basically great at showing all this but to make it a little better, inflicting blood loss should heal you by a big chunk, and inflicting it 3 times to one enemy should greatly buff your resistances and damage output for a short while, stacking with the usual existing bonuses.
Malenia in addition to being very scarlet rotty has her whole thing centered around willpower to push through and heal from her attacks when she lands attacks, her rune could be wildly improved by simply making it a buffed version of the pontiff ring from dark souls where consecutive attacks heal, and then for that extra flavour, when you are inflicted with Scarlet rot, lower your defensive stats by a chunk but cause the rot effect to heal you instead of hurt you and add a rot effect to your charged heavy attacks
Rennala doesn't really offer anything beyond the rebirth effect, as useful as reallocation of stats can be when you spot a new build online and try it out for 3 seconds, I feel her rune would be better if in addition to the respec option you could just give her larval tears, every larval tear you give her would grant 2 stat points you could allocate anywhere that would be granted whenever you activate her rune, there are 18 larval tears in one playthrough so thats 36 stat points on demand, with more each ng+ run, making this a rune that becomes more and more valuable as you are "reborn" into ng+ runs
Radahns great rune, much like Godrick and Morgotts is basically just a stat booster, his rune ideally should play into his gravity magic and overall power more, having the rune active should greatly increase equip stat, increase resistances to scarlet rot and resistances to all non magic damage types, boost gravity magic damage and damage with collosal swords in addition to the basic increases it offers, your poise should be increased alongside immunity from certain grab attacks, enemies around you would be unable to heal themselves.
This rune basically should be the ultimate rune to use against malenia with good benefits to specific builds and playstyles
Morgotts rune currently just gives you more health, I feel it should buff any omen related spells or weapons, increase damage to omen type enemies and grant more damage resistance when your health falls below a certain margin, reflecting Morgott being slightly tankier when his second phase hits, basically making you resilient whilst also more powerful vs any other omen cursed enemies like Mohg.
Rykards rune is honestly pretty great as is, it's effect plays nicely with everything else related to him, the blade, the talisman etc all are about the recovery of health through "devouring" your enemies in battle, only thing i'd add would be resistance to fire, lava immunity and perhaps having multikills or repeated damage on a single target spawn a rykards rancor skull that would hit your target or the nearest target, just for that extra bonus and relation to the boss, think of them as the enraged captured souls of things you've beaten to death being hurled at your next target.
with all that being said, obviously none of the runes are ever likely to be reworked as most of them are fine as is, just wanted to share my ideas on ways they might be improved in such a way that would make using them more rewarding and that would warrant more consideration for each build rather than just slapping on Morgott, Godrick or Radahn and calling it a day.
