The only thing I hated about being a DA was whenever I went to work with a new doctor, they expected me to know what they wanted and how they wanted it on the very first try, without even bothering to tell me how they liked things. Every dentist works differently, has a different style, and it takes time to learn their movements and their personal flow. Yet explaining this to most dentists is like talking to a brick wall.

    • @Geminitwins247

Agreed, in the office I work for we have an oral surgeon come in every few months or so and at first I thought I would be able to get his flow but unfortunately I haven't been able to grasp his way of working. I'm to use to the way my dentist works and the way she does things. Luckily for me I think the dentist I work for sees that and decides to chair side assist him when he comes in.

      Omg Ik!!!
When I started working with a new doctor I didn't know he wanted me to do the cleaning after put the crown (like cleaning the remains of the cement)
And so he want to the other room to see another patient and I didn't know what to do, cus the patient was waiting with his fricking mouth open with remains of the glue and the cement, when I told the doctor we didn't finish with him yet he rolled his eyes at me, and said very loudly (in front of the patient!) What don't you understand clean the rest, you are wasting my time...
And I was like : fuck, he is gonna be very fun to work with😑

Months before deciding to enroll into DA school, I searched for a video that actually showed “A day in the life of a DA”, & not just a “sit down vlog” without an actual visual insight of what to actually except! As a DA student, I can say that your video is spot on! Great video this really gives aspiring DAs a huge glimpse into the DAs job description.

It’s absolutely ridiculous how hard we as assistants work out of everyone else in the practice and yet we are paid the lowest. Between maintenance, ordering supplies, preparing lab cases, sterilization, disinfection of rooms and surface areas, we hardly get what others receive as a full break or lunchtime. Constantly trying to get setups, rooms and patients cared for and yet we are the ones disrespected patients, staff and cheap dentists. During these times of pandemic we are highly at risk of an exposure and yet we continue our roles and duties as health care providers to provide patients with proper treatment and oral health education. Dental assistants deserve more respect, higher pay and benefits just as much as others receive in the oral healthcare field. Without assistants there would be no dental practice.

No one wants to be on the front line of the #1 most dangerous job there is in this pandemic. Doctors don't know anything about sterilization protocol let alone breaking down a opertorary and set up. Most don't know where anything is!! Why do hygienist have a national group and assistant don't. Why aren't we organized. Why aren't we unionized? A very good employer to which I was sad that I had to leave. I already have a bachelor degree so I wouldn't say I messed up. Also the dental hygiene programs in my area are very tough to get into cause there are only a few. For me, i've decided to try to make use of my degree and find a decent paying job hopefully with benefits. That is another thing with the dental field. It can be tough to get full benefits. Although, I'm from Australia and most of the dental clinics I go for a checkup are always very chill and in a friendly environment. Perhaps they are faking it behind our backs? Great job on making this video! I'm one of the very few male dental assistants. I've worked as a DA for more than 8 years. That feeling of dread of coming to work in the morning is the worst, all because of the dentist.

Duties from front desk to operatories, to sterilization, to ordering supplies, to back lab pouring stone models / making bleaching trays /custom trays etc .... I've been a DA since 1986 and yes, each decade gives me more & more things to learn, to remember, to do in the office and how to handle a variety of situations in an office specially if someone has a different vibes from the rest.

Way to much duties on one person, not to mention no breaks in between patients. Your honestly lucky if you even get a lunch or time to drink water. You literally have to cut yourself in 3 to get everything done. It's impossible for one person to tray set, get the room ready, sterilize, assist dentint, and handle the front desk all at once. This is the main reason why everyone that graduates as a DA doesn't stay long in the practice long

Giselle Mariscal went through that same situation when I had just gotten out of school about a year and half ago but trust me after a few interviews I finally found my current office that I’ve been with ever since and it was sooo worth the wait! My school was my biggest help in getting placed because they would send my resume out non stop to so many different offices until I finally got hired! Don’t lose hope and good luck :)!

It happened to me too. I finished school in 2015, I had to literally relocate to Arizona just to find work. I'm finally at a dentist office 4 years later 😄 Dont give up, they always discriminate on new dental assistants. Try volunteering at your local free dental clinic.

I’m a dental technician and I’ve had the opportunity to experience this role as part of my national service. For me it’s been an okay experience. The downside for me is the long hours on your feet and the workload. Also you’d have to deal with very disrespectful doctors who don’t appreciate the effort you put in place to keep the surgery running at all times. I don’t like the job because it offers no career progression. I got a degree in Dental Laboratory Sciences and somehow learnt the nurse role in a week so for me it’s not a special job and it doesn’t even pay as much considering how stressful it is. Highly wouldn’t recommend 🥴

I did not even apply for the perm job.. I believe bc the applicants were not showing up bc the office is so toxic... all the workers look miserable and I hated temping there myself... dentists there are so entitled and disrespectful. I can't blame them for feeling miserable. But yeah they offered me the job and I told the office manager the dentist I worked with spoke to me in a condescending way, she debated with me... I told her people naturally do not want to go places or be around ppl who talk down to them. It is honestly such a shit job based on who you work with and how they treat you.

You are going to love being a dental assistant!!! Don't let negative comments worry you - everyone has a different experience due to location, office type, etc. Once you find an office where your values match - you'll be so happy! Hope this helps! Sending you positive vibes!

For those of you who were dental assistants then became hygienist, did you hate assisting, but ended up liking hygiene. I’m debating whether this is the right field for me, because to be honestly, I don’t like dental assisting so far and I’m wondering if hygiene is right for me.

Why didn’t you choose to become a dentist?
You don’t have to answer if you don’t feel like it lol 😂

    • @TeethTalk
      @TeethTalk  5 лет назад +3

Totally a good question! I should make a video about that! Quick answer - I was observing dentists (because I was originally pre-dental) and I always caught myself observing the hygienist instead. I was much more interested in the preventive aspect of dentistry opposed to the restorative. Hope this helps :)

@@kyliesmith621 it wasn't bad you have to find a good employer. I worked at a couple of bad places at first but I took my experiences with me. I eventually found a great employer and settled in.
