    Hi Kat - I love your videos! Wanted to clarify a points:
    Weight restrictions: It's a little more complicated than what was presented. Weight restrictions may typically occur because of weather. For example, during the summer, temperatures in LAS and PHX are very hot, and more runway is required for takeoff. Consequently, non-revs may need to be left behind to free up weight needed for takeoff. My strategy when flying from LAS during the summer is to pick early-morning flights to avoid getting stuck (it's happened too many times!).
    Additionally, the airline I just retired from flew to cargo-crtical cities such as LIM and SCL. Often, produce and other time-sensitive items would need to be shipped and depending on how much was needed to be transported on a given flight, non-revs wouldn't find out until the very last minute whether they were getting on - even if there were lots of available seats. Also, some planes such as Boeing 767-400s, are flown to nearly the maximum range allowed, and this can make it difficult to fly at full capacity.
    Also, regional jets can pose some risks. For example, I was standing by once in YUL with one other non-rev. There were two seats available but we were not cleared. I asked the gate agent why and she explained the weight restriction problem. I asked if she could check at the last minute to see if we could be cleared.
    She phoned the flight crew, and the FO came out to the gate area, took out a pencil, quickly calculated the weight, and told us to run on the plane. It was too funny but it worked!
    ZEDs: Great points made. But also it's important to know that standby priority on ZEDs is often LOWER than that on buddy passes because buddy passers typically use employee seniority dates while ZED seniority is day-of-departure. Also, when picking connecting options, it's a good idea to note whether there are sufficient flights on other airlines so that if your plans fall apart (as you so well outlined), you can whip out your electronic device and quickly purchase a ZED ticket. Also, registered guests are typically NOT allowed to fly on ZED tickets; they are reserved for employees and eligible dependents. Lastly, this sounds a bit strange, but if you are flying overseas, check to see if WiFi access is available at any airport that you are transiting so that you know whether you need to set up ZEDs in advance or can do it last minute at the airport.
    Sorry for the long note! Hope this helpful.
    Thanks again for the great video content!

    I worked for AA and this is what I learned. Best day to travel standby is Tuesday and Wednesday. Also avoid traveling standby once the kids get out of school. Take the first flight out. That means that 6am flight will be what you take. Also easier to travel on standby internationally than domestic.

      And also on the notoriously poor travel days.
      I had to return from a holiday on Christmas Day because I had something important to attend on Boxing Day, with the rest of my family returning three days later. I had my pick of any flight out on Christmas Day and went for the late afternoon (as it was all wide open on the day). But we have decided to depart together on the last flight out on Christmas Day. All the non-revs got on and the plane departed with 45 empty seats. The few days after that were really full.

    Hey Kat, pilot here. Weight restrictions generally happen because of a few things. Most common are:
    1. runway length - shorter runways limit the amount of weight we can take off with generally because either the amount of distance it would take to either stop the plane after an aborted take off (like losing an engine), or the amount of distance we would need to take off after losing an engine.
    2. Weather/ runway contamination - so if it’s really hot and/or also an airport that located really high (like Denver), or if there’s snow/ice/water on the runway this makes it harder for the airplane to get off the ground, and it’s another situation where you might be weight limited.
    3. Obstacle clearance - some airports have tall trees, mountains, or towers etc that we need to maintain a certain distance from both in normal conditions or if we lost an engine on t/o and continue the take off. This could be a reason we are weight limited due to the performance required to meet the vertical obstacle clearance requirements.
    4. Center of gravity - all aircraft have limitations to how far forward or aft your CG can be. Because of this you could be weight limited or require passengers to be seated in a certain arrangement to keep the CG of the plane within certain parameters.
    5. Another more obvious reason would be because you are going a long distance and need the extra weight (up to your maximum certified take off weight) for extra fuel in order to make it to you destination!
    This isn’t all the reasons, but it’s definitely the most common.
    PS, you are awesome Kat and if I ever see ya while commuting I’ll give you a shout!

    One time my wife and I flew D1 from DFW to SBA for a short vacation, It was an Eagle CRJ-700 and there was only 1 flight a day; We had no problem getting seats at DFW, but coming back we and several other non revs got seats on the plane but before being pushed back from the gate I heard the captain talking to one of the FAs, apparently they were afraid the aircraft was overweight because of the luggage, so all the non revs had to get off the plane. The gate agent promised she would get us on the next day, and sure enough she did.

    Hi Kat I really love your channel! Weight restrictions often have to do with an increase in outside temperature, so that affects the fuel, which then affects passenger and cargo weight. Also maybe it depends on your airline, but our contract protects jumpseaters from weight restrictions. 😊

    I know this is an older video, but still good information. As a result of growing up flying standby, I ALWAYS have a change of clothes with me in my carryon. I've been paying for my own tickets for many years now. ALWAYS have the bare essentials for an overnight.
    Even for a situation where I had to fly out and home all in the same day. I still packed a VERY small carryon. You guessed it, flight home got cancelled due to weather. I had been in the same clothes since 5 am. I was TIRED, so was ok with having to pay for the hotel (weather isn't the airline's fault), instead of hanging out in a conference room, outside of security. I was able to shower, get a nap, and have clean clothes for the next day.
    Growing up flying standby, and being prepared, kept that day from being any worse.
    I also felt sorry for the gate agents for people being **** about the situation. Seriously, there were major tornados being reported along the flight path.

    Also as a gate agent please be courteous and not ask us a million times about standby, especially if there’s a line of paying passengers. Check in once to let us know you’re here, if we don’t call you name ask again when the flight appears completely boarded. If you’re flying on a pass, have your friend research plan B or C, it can be time consuming researching non rev options when there’s a lot of other things we need to do at gate. I was once clearing the standby list for revenue passengers and this buddy pass rider kept coming up and cutting them in line and didn’t understand what being #11 on the list meant. Arg.

    My dad is a retired Alaska airlines mechanic who started in 1999 so ig we usually get high priority standby, but yeah having a plan b or so-on is always necessary because you really never know what’s gon happen, last weekend my mom and I were flying to San Francisco for a connecting flight to Las Vegas, we got delayed and hour in a half in Portland due to a computer system problem, once we landed in San Fran we had to wait another half an hour for our gate to open, we got off and we figured out that we missed our connecting flight to Vegas by 3 minutes who just closed all boarding, we got the earliest flight to Las Vegas the next morning at 6 am, so we stayed at a friends house in San Fran, but atleast when we got on our flight to Vegas we got bumped up to first class even tho we were standby...

    I've only flown standby with the military. Sounds similar cargo/weight wise. We would fly in C-120 and C-130's, sometimes jump seats of sort and sometimes normal seats.
    My ex made someone's day most likely earlier this month. He was late getting my daughter to the airport, I am talking to late to get checked in.🤦‍♀️ She flew in the next day as no other options for unaccompanied minors.

    Smaller planes also get weight restricted when the flight is full and everyone checks a crap-ton of bags. If we were weight restricted we just tossed bags off and sent them later...not what we were supposed to do but it was easier than getting someone to volunteer to go on a different flight.

    This is a good video. I’ve been a SA on UA for over 40 years I’ll add don’t dress like a bum and expect to get Bus. Class or even on the plane. Also be nice to the Gate Agents since there the ones that are giving you the seats. I always book my seat the night before I want to go since anytime before that really doesn’t matter. Since I’m in Vegas I have to fly to a UA base usually SFO. If I want to fly to Tokyo I’ll look on the app and see how many Bus. Class seats are available how many stand by‘s if I’m sure I’ll get Bus Class I’ll go to the airport. From LAS to SFO as long as the flight is overbooked by 15 or less I go and have never not gotten on a flight. In Vegas there so many detractions the 6AM flight people don’t make it to the airport the slots that are all over the place and the 15 minute before departure they don’t mean 14 minutes. At the 15 minute mark they start calling names paid passengers go first then by seniority working employees next then retires go next then last is the Buddy Pass. Southwest I’ve heard are the best buddy passes they don’t charge you anything and if you miss your connection they will bring you back home where the other big 3 will leave you stranded.

    Kat, I love your videos. We are looking to fly from NC to Edinburgh Scotland next year. What’s the difference between Premium Economy, Business and First Class? Are they worth the cost difference? I get really uncomfortable on these long trips any tips? Thanks.

    • @KatNesbitt
      @KatNesbitt  4 года назад +1

      First class is definitely more comfortable (especially for sleeping) because the chairs can completely go down plus you get a three course meal, free drinks, and walk up snack bar, not to mention the amenity kits and headphones, etc. Business is a tricky one because sometimes Business refers to first class and sometimes it refers to Premium economy depending on the aircraft so I would have a hard time answering that one. Premium economy usually has a little more room than coach and upgraded meal selections, but the seats don't usually completely lay flat like in first class.

    Weight restrictions are dictated by the type of aircraft. I’m sure some place use this as an excuse to do unethical things but at my station, only one flight is weight restricted because its the smallest aircraft in the fleet. Its a little 145 that flies to ORD from DAY.

    • @eliotmoss2164
      @eliotmoss2164 5 лет назад

      Abby, Kat's video is for airline-employee travel. I'm old enough to remember when airlines offered discounts for standby travel, but those no longer exist - for good reason. If airlines encouraged people to standby for flights, the lines would be ridiculously long, and it would take forever to finish boarding flights. So, these days, standby flights are limited to employee-related travel and revenue passengers seeking to make voluntary changes to earlier/later flights or those passengers who have experienced flight disruptions for one reason or another.

    • @KatNesbitt
      @KatNesbitt  5 лет назад

      Eliot is very right! Usually you wouldn't want to choose to fly standby anyways because you would be at such a low priority like a buddy pass. Not to mention now there are some much better discounted offers on flights that will actually guarantee you a seat!

It could be great where you are but major storm at your destination so they'll cancel the flight or a storm over the mountains that you have to go over to get there could have a storm, so for domestic, I check the whole US map weather to see if anything might be coming to the route that could be a problem.
