  • Thanks To Zippo Varga for this idea. I had to modify his idea to make mine work.
    Let me know if 30 minutes is too long for a video.

    30 minutes is never too long for a video when it's got the content!! A tip for when you're short on spindle height when assembling. Take an angle grinder and take off some material off the top of the axle tube that the spindle goes through. That's if you can't get the snap ring on otherwise. I'm glad this worked on the Deere!! And, it's an inexpensive alternative to adding power steering eh? Cheers my good Man! Sean~

      A cheap old flat file will do a nice job if you don't have an angle grinder.

      Thanks. I didn't want to change the factory shape if the spindle. But I did think about it. Still might. Very easy to do and I only need 1/16 of an inch.

      A note to James. I have 4 angle grinders. Flapdisk, cutter, wire brush and a 1/4 inch grinding wheel. I don't have to change disks.

    I also viewed ZippoVarga's video and tried this method on my Snapper 14.5 HP Briggs & Stratton garden tractor. With the smallest thrush washers and thinner snap ring, I was able to achieve the correct combination to ensure a tight fit.
    Thanks to ZippoVarga and Bruce for making these upgrade videos.

    Great video Sir; I just put these on a Craftsman (MTD) lawn tractor I had to modify the left side axle as the "spring" washer retainer wouldn't fit (drilled and tapped for SS 1/4"-20 x 3/4" loc-tite and fender washer) the difference is amazing and it should take load off the crappy steering gear assembly. Thanks for the idea and the video.

    The reason your steering was So tight was because your spindles were as dry as a popcorn fart. I grease the ones on my Snapper SPX about once a month. I also grease the wheel spindles at the same time with EP2, extreme pressure 2 grease. I was also taught to clean off the ends of grease fittings with a rag before I put a grease gun on them to keep dirt from being pushed into the bearing. That's old school preventative maintenance 101.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  6 лет назад +4

      Right I get it I am old too. Of course i wouldn't push dirt into a grease nipple. If i showed everything no one would watch as the subject of the video would be too small.

    I never heard of poor man's power steering. That tractor is not too heavy, so it is interesting that it was that difficult to steer. Come to think of it I had some tractors here about 2 years ago and people wanted the craftsman tractors rather than the John deere because they steer easy and a much tighter radius. It was about a 2006 lt 100 series JD.

      Well I understand. However, you are not watching a Steven Spielberg production. I went to your channel and noticed you have not made any videos. So, I will make you a deal!!! I will make sure I improve my videos and at the same time I want you to make one video of something you like. I will watch it and enjoy your effort. This is a very difficult thing to do on a budget as there is only one person producing the entertainment. There is no one else doing this. Including----- Ideas, Filming, Production and Editing, Sound and Lighting. I hope you enjoy my other productions and I truly want you to enjoy my other videos.

    That spindle shaft might turn a lot easier if you cleaned off the rust on it and greased it once in a while with EP2.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  6 лет назад +4

      It felt a lot smoother than it looked. I grease it every year. I think you should start making videos. It is tougher than it looks. Even just do a service of a lawn mower. You will learn a lot (not about lawn mowers) but of video production.

    Wondering why you didn't clean the rust off the kingpin before putting the grease on and installing it? It looked rusty from here in Minnesota. I love the idea and have forwarded your video to a friend of mine who was asking about power steering for his riding mower. I am going to try this on my rider as well. Thanks for sharing.

    Check your plastic bushing on the steering shaft. Hard steering is usually bad gear teeth and gear plate teeth. The plastic bushing wears out causing the steering shaft to move tilting the drive gear crooked grinding away the teeth on the gear plate. You're wasting your time > fix the real problem.

    I notice you’ve had Some Video Editing done. That’s wonderful. More RUclips producers NEED to do editing. In particular, MAKING IT SHORTER. SKIPPING THE UNNECESSARY PARTS. You too could improve in this respect. For example, you don’t have to hold something in front of the camera for five seconds. IF we want to see it longer than half a second, we can hit “Pause.” I’d bet this 29:38-minute video could Easily be reduced to five minutes.
    At the 8:20 minute point (and elsewhere) you are concerned about whether the thrust washer is too thick. That wouldn’t be an issue at all. All you need to do is grind some of the vertical (Pipe) away to MAKE ROOM.
    WHERE do you buy your thrust washers? Boca Bearings is the best I’ve found so far, but they don’t have enough choices.
    ... Above all, THANK YOU for a brilliant solution!

      @BrucesShop  5 лет назад

    • @bigsmiler5101
      @bigsmiler5101 5 лет назад

      @@BrucesShop: I want to restate my PRAISE of your simplest of solutions. I bought bearings from two sources and waited to see which arrived first. I have to shave 1/16th inch off the vertical, but I did that at the TOP. I believe any errors in not have a perfect 90-degree cut isn't as relevant there. I used to NOT be able to move the steering wheel when parked, even using both hands. Now I can move it easily with one hand.

    • @BrucesShop
      @BrucesShop  5 лет назад

      @@bigsmiler5101 I am going to shave a bit off the top of both tractors. thanks

    The notches you ground into the thrust washers, to allow grease into the bearings, was not at all worth the benefit you imagined. Grease the bearing by hand when you are putting things together. Then hit the spindle with a grease gun. Watch the grease squeezing out all over the place. That will show you just what a waste of time grinding notches in the washers was. Go watch the Steve Stoltz video on the same subject. Watch when he greases the spindle at the end of his assembly. See clearly what I mean.
