    I re-sealed the pump and it's working again - thanks for the help. It has shown up other problems in the system. The previous owner welded (or braised) the steering shaft to the bracket that connect the shaft to the ram, and also welded the pin that holds the ram to the body of the tractor over on the far left (looking in towards the rad from the front). This last weld has broken and the pin is only sitting in place (not secured in any way). There plenty of play in the steering shaft and the ram/pin so I have no chance of adjusting the actuator mechanism to work both ways. I think I need to replace the whole front axle casting to solve the ram/pin issue and maybe also the play in the shaft. What do you think?

    Thanks for your helpful videos! I'm just finishing doing the same job on a similar but different Plessey pump on my MF188. All went well until I started to tighten up the bolts, any more than just snug and the shaft gets very hard to turn and feels like the pump gears are binding up. I have looked more than once and can't find anything wrong. How hard should the driven shaft be to turn after it's all buckled up? How much torque should the bolts have? Thanks for your help!

    • @BundyBearsShed
      @BundyBearsShed  7 лет назад

      G Day If the pump is too tight to turn there is possibly an o ring in the wrong place. the bolts should be around 35ft/lb for a 3/8 or 10mm bolt. Before nipping the pump up the last bit start turning it by hand and it may help lining up the bearings better, just a long shot. It is hard to tell you exactly what is wrong without having it in my hands.

    Hi Bundy. Great video. This inspired me to take a look at my Massey Ferguson 175 power steering pump. The tractor is very difficult to turn and needs oil added occasionally. This pump has been taken apart before by someone else--it has the punch marks already in place--and the middle section of the pump is a brighter silver color. My pump is different. Instead of having a replaceable cartridge filter inside the reservoir canister there is a small screen which is attached by what I presume is 1/2 inch pipe thread. Also there is another device in there that is attached by the same type thread that has "relief" printed on the pump housing. The seal looks good, and I can see nothing obviously wrong with the pump itself. The O ring set is different and there are a couple of copper-looking flat pieces on either end of the gears. I should probably replace the seal and O ring and whatever else you think before re-assembling it. Do you know what seat kit this pump takes? Another issue with this pump is that the fill plug threads are about worn out-- I have to be careful not to over-tighten it and strip more threads. Thanks again for your great videos.

    Great video / I will apply your "skills" to my ford 5610 power steering pump rebuild, Do you have any tips on a 5610 power steering pump, they no longer make this unit and theres lots of after market pumps out there at a heavy price tag, my pump works great just a few leaks bleeding into oil pan witch is a big concern , I have a seal kit for this pump $90.00 just trying to save a factory pump befor going to a cheaper aftermarket pump ,Thanks again for you skills,

    • @BundyBearsShed
      @BundyBearsShed  Год назад +1

      The new seal kit may work for a while but in the long run it depends on the wear in the pump. Pump wear generates heat and that is what makes the seals go hard just as old age will so if you fit the kit and it doesnt last all that long the aftermarket pump is the way to go buy nothing wrong with trying the kit first it may work out well.

    Hi Lance, I've just done my Plessey Pump using the Sparex kit suitable for it, but I've got an issue as the pump doesn't turn freely when the 4 bolts are tightened down. As long as the bolts are only hand tight it turns nicely, but when I tighten them down the two guides in which the gears turn are squeezed together and block the gears, because of the inner O-rings push on them. Without the gear on I can't turn it by hand. The O-Rings seem to have good protrusion, it doesn't seem to be too much (~ 0,2-0,3 mm)
    Did you also have this issue? Is it normal to be as tight before the O-Rings get warm for the first time and maybe settle down?
    Thanks in advance.

    • @BundyBearsShed
      @BundyBearsShed  2 месяца назад

      G Day Tim, With the new kit there is no way you can turn by hand, the o rings put side pressure on the gears to stop internal leakage. Make sure it has plenty of oil in it to lubricate the pump at start up. You usually do need a spanner on the gear to get them to turn when they are in good condition.

    • @BundyBearsShed

      G Day Huey, Im pretty sure the 8401 would have a very similar wiring diagram to a TW series tractor. We do have an IT manual for sale for around $80 (part no ITF045) that covers the TW range that might be of help.
      Give Ross a ring on 1300 850 097 and he could arrange one to be sent to you. The manuals are not as good as the genuine ones and they presume you have some mechanical aptitude but I have used them and got by with no problems.

    This is off topic because I'm asking about using a machine before getting into needed pump unit service, repair, or replacement. I just bought an MF65 diesel. I noticed steering assist was not working on the initial test. The owner was never unaware of this so it has likely been in this state already during several years of his ownership and before. He had used the tractor regularly, but not prolonged heavy use. I found there was no fluid visible in the reservoir. So it seems there is a good chance the pump is already too damaged to repair. I intended to put fluid in, try to detect leaks, and drive it the 30 miles home. I thought I could get my urgently needed mowing done now and deal with the steering issue when I have more time and better information.. I posted about this on a vintage tractor web site and was advised of the risk of damage to injector drive components from a damaged pump.
    I'd still like to carry out my plan except, also add regular stops on the trip home to add fluid for lubrication. And, when I get there, remove the steering pump if possible before mowing to remove that risk of damage to the drive components.
    I'm asking you if it might be possible to do that. I assume it would be desirable to fashion a dust cover for the resulting opening in the injector pump case, but don't know if the steering pump is adding structural support. Also don't know yet the procedure for separating the pumps. a link to an online manual would be helpful.
    Maybe after what the pump has apparently gone through it needs to be replaced. I see options on offered on ebay and wondered about the reliability of the various options.

    I have a MF 165 Perkins 212 engine tractor. Bought it reasently.&. I repaired the power steering pump.and fixed new filter too like the one which was already there.(paper filter with a steel outer . like the one you have in your video)
    But when I started it did not work.
    I checked the oil lines, checked the jack, the valve and I checked the oil pressure too, and found the pressure was week,
    Finally I found out that the filter is not draining enough oil to the jack to move.
    Then l got rid of the paper filter and fixed a steel mesh filter (like the one in the hidrolic pump.)
    Now the pump & steering work s well.

    The steering of my Massey Ferguson 3303 is hard to drive, the problem is the filter to change or eventually seals to repair?

    • @BundyBearsShed
      @BundyBearsShed  2 года назад +1

      The filter is the cheapest to do but do not forget to grease the front end well too.

  • @231MasseyFerguson
    @231MasseyFerguson 7 лет назад

    Had my pump rebuilt & got it back on the tractor this evening. It's for sure has about 80%-90% better steering but still not fixed. I'm thinking it's the control valve adjustment on the steering column because I adjusted it, not knowing what I was doing. This was before I took the pump off trying to diagnose the steering problem.
    Do you know the best way to adjust that control valve?

    • @BundyBearsShed
      @BundyBearsShed  7 лет назад

      The turn buckle on the control valve adjusts the neutral, too much one way it will only steer one way and not the other so try to fine tune the turnbuckle. If it just has no power both ways the pump may just be worn out.

      As long as it's sealed correctly, how does the pump wear out when it's gear driven? Just asking./

    • @BundyBearsShed
      @BundyBearsShed  7 лет назад

      If the bearings/bushes wear a bit the gear moves to the side of the housing and gouges it out and the oil leaks from the extra internal clearance, if you can feel a groove in the main body from the gear it is probably worn.

    • @231MasseyFerguson
      @231MasseyFerguson 7 лет назад

      +Bundy Bears Shed
      Ok so I put the left power steering cylinder on the right side of the tractor and the right cylinder on the left side. It still has that resistance spot at times when turning to the right. The control valve has properly been adjusted. It would barely steer to the right before the pump got rebuilt. After rebuild, it made a huge difference in the steering. Steers a lot better but not exactly where it should be.
      I'm gonna have to agree with you and say the pump is worn out. That's what everything is pointing towards now. Bad part is the pump for my 231 has been discontinued and there's not a single one available for my year model. What would you do my friend?

    My Massey 175 diesel turns good to the left but hangs up and power steering won't work turning right what causes that

    • @BundyBearsShed
      @BundyBearsShed  6 лет назад

      G Day Waylon, If you look in behind the grille there is a small turnbuckle. Adjust that as that adjusts the valve travel.
      too far one way and you will loose left and too far the other you will loose right steering.
      you need to find the happy medium in the centre so the valve opens both ways.

    Hello, , Lance. Indiana, USA. here 2020 .. You did not tell about what type or kind of oil to use ? As all Manufactures have there brand of oils .. But, when you got an older model and the company sold out in mid 80's I believe Agco, now for Massey Ferguson. Hell, I would use old cooking oil just to see if it works and builds pressure ! Thanks .. G day .... PATRICK

    Something is going on with the steering on my 1998 Massey Ferguson 231 tractor. It has hard spots that wanna stop the wheel from turning mainly when you turn to the right. It will do it to the left also but not near as bad.
    At idle it seems to steer fine but when the RPMs are up it struggles to steer.
    Do you have an idea of what's going on? The tractor has 1,315 hours.
    Thank You

    • @BundyBearsShed
      @BundyBearsShed  7 лет назад

      You have a strange problem, usually it is when you rev the tractor it gets better when the power steering pump is worn.
      The first thing I would look at is the power steering oil filter as with a blocked filter the more you rev an engine the more the pump will cavitate and at idle the pump can get enough oil through the filter to work correctly.
      Check the filter and let me know how you go I would be interested, also check someone has not put a thick gear oil in there by mistake too if it has a seperate oil reservoir.

    • @231MasseyFerguson

      I put a new filter in. I can actually see oil coming out the holes of the filter with the fill/check plug out. The oil looks like it's being pumped thru the filter only a little, or not fast enough, or not enough pressure behind it. I'm not sure.
      I don't remember the correct way to add the fluid. Stickers on the pump are worn off. Engine running? Engine killed? How to bleed air?
      The pump I have is not like yours in the video.
      Mine is the pancake looking pump.
      Look up 231 Massey Ferguson power steering pump for a picture of you wish to view it.
      I notice once the tractor gets hot the steering gets much worse. Even at idle.
      How can I tell if the pump is bad or if 1 of the cylinders is bypassing internally? The left cylinder was re packed a couple years ago by a Massey dealer but the right cylinder hasn't been touched. I noticed the right cylinder rod is getting a little nasty looking oil on it now.
      Thank You for trying to help!

    • @BundyBearsShed
      @BundyBearsShed  7 лет назад

      If when hot the steering is worse it is a worn out pomp.

    • @231MasseyFerguson
      @231MasseyFerguson 7 лет назад

      The pump is very hot to the touch also.
      Are aftermarket pumps any good? Aftermarket is from $115-$160 and a pump from Massey is around $360. Big difference!
      Would the pump be worth rebuilding?
