  • Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes is a triumph. In this video essay, I discuss why Wes Ball's Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes is a masterpiece and why I think it's one of the best Planet Of The Apes movies of all time.
    Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is a 2024 American science fiction action film directed by Wes Ball and written by Josh Friedman. The standalone sequel to War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), it is the fourth installment in the Planet of the Apes reboot franchise and the tenth film overall. The film stars Owen Teague in the lead role alongside Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy. The film takes place 300 years after the events of War and follows a young chimpanzee named Noa, who embarks on a journey alongside a human woman named Mae to determine the future for apes and humans alike.

    Had a great time watching Wes Ball's Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes. Thought it was a solid start to a new trilogy and was a film that sets up some interesting directions for the franchise to take beyond it. But what were your thoughts on the film? Let me know down below.

    One of the most beautiful movies to grace the big screen in a long time. Loved the characters, the story, and the world. I've rarely if ever had an IMAX experience be so utterly immersive and transporting. Magic and mythical.

    "Planet of the Apes" movies feel so different every time, they're hugely based blockbusters pushing the limits in arguments told and special effects involved. "Kingdom" isn't different: I loved the new characters and their arcs, the immaculate VFX and the Wes Ball directing was even more poweful than I could expect, an artist surely deserving a follow for his next projects (like the Zelda movie).

      Agree. I'm 100% on board for the Zelda movie I feel like it's now guaranteed to be a success and liked by the fickle fandom that is geek culture. I'm sure Nintendo will set borders around how the story can be told, just like how Miyamoto had a say so in how the Mario movie was made. Between Nintendo that loves their brand more than any other compaby EVER and having this amazing director who understands world buyilding, proper use of CGI and motion capture, and making compelling characters that we can connect with and root for. Looking forward to Wes Ball's Zelda!

    Honestly, the main villain is Mae in this movie. Proximus is overall a good leader minus the fact that he got his kingdom through conquest. It was Mae who is the main bad guy tho

    • @ichigen511

      I kinda agree with you but it's a bit more nuanced than how you put it IMO. She's definately not the protaginist one assume's she is when you meet her when she connects with Noa and the orangutan. I think she is on her hero's journey and it will take two more movies for her to come aorund to be a true friend of the apes. We'll see! I'm definately enjoying the ride so far. Cheers!
      Edit: I don't think Mae brought the gun to kill Noa. I think she brought it thinking that Noa might want to try and kill her. Not sure though it's left up to our imaginations. Love ambiguous endings, always have.

I watch tons of movies every year all my life and I could honestly say there are so many great movies coming out of Hollywood there always has been probably always will be. There are always passionate producers, and passionate directors, and passionate storytellers, and passionate actors. This movie is another great example of why Hollywood is so famous around the world and popular with the masses. Anyways, my 2 cents!

    As a proud member and supporter of the Apes films since 2011, this film in terms of quality falls in line more with Rise. Dawn and War are just masterpieces and it’s not easy to compare. This idea isn’t tackling Subjects like psychology of oppression or the us or them mentality or even the cost of vengeance. This film tackles the idea of culture and how our culture and ideas develop and change which is a good story worth telling but I feel as though it’s not being used as much as it could be.

Great entertainment with a twist at the end that leaves you wanting to find out more. Like you, I love the franchise. Thank you for this review! A question: When the screen said something like “several generations later”, was it as long as 300 years? A generation is about 20 years, so while watching I assumed 60-70 years had gone by since Caesar died. That would explain to me why the apes hadn’t advanced that much from Caesar’s time. I might be wrong, though. Has anyone else heard differently?

    @peterm.4355 21 день назад +4

    • @boreopithecus
      @boreopithecus 21 день назад

      I basically agree. I liked it overall and had a good time but I felt like there was a better story in there and that with some restructuring it could have come out a lot better. But the real problem for me is the ending and its implications, I think it veered off in a pretty bad direction at the end which makes me worried about the sequel(s).
      The humans still being so strong and advanced kind of cheapens the previous films imo, and the virus preventing them from being able to step outside without protective gear a) severely limits where the story can go next (essentially all apes (=carriers) must die from the human perspective, so co-existence is off the table), unless
      b) they can find a cure which would make the story about that, finding the cure, a plot we’ve already seen in basically every zombie movie, and that’s not what this should be about. It should be about the relations between apes and humans, not some virus
      It’s by no means unsalvagable but this is not a good setup that allows them to explore what’s unique and interesting about this setting imo.

    The big thing I didn't like was the fact that the movie only took place less that 30yrs into the future. Seems like a far reach for all of the things that happened prior to the film and makes no sense how there hasn't been some sort of revolution from humans. If they have one vault with weapons and technology, I'm sure there's others. Maybe I'm being too picky, but that made me question the movie more than enjoy at points.
