  • Civil War is a tense film. Alex Garland's Civil War starring Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Stephen McKinley Henderson is tense, but ultimately flawed. It's a masterclass in cinematic tension, but lacks in the context of its story. In this video, I give you my spoiler free review of Civil War. What is your reaction to Civil War? Let me know in the comments below.
Civil War is a 2024 dystopian action film written and directed by Alex Garland. The film stars Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Nick Offerman. Its plot follows a team of journalists who travel across the United States during a rapidly escalating Second American Civil War, which has engulfed the entire nation.

I ultimately left Alex Garland's Civil War with mixed feelings, but I can't deny that the filmmaking and the approach were a unique way to tackle it. What were your thoughts on the film?

I think, not Identifying the political parties was a good move by Garland... It broadens the films outlook to counties like Hungary, Brazil, Myanmar, etc ... Who have had, and have recently had these movements ... Trump has had his war on the Press for years, deliberately divides the country, wants to end the FBI and voiced being a Dictator ( From his future house arrest prison sentence ) Naming the political parties could get a media band, or more publicity ... The release date is perfect with US elections in November and I hope everyone goes and watches it.

I would’ve liked maybe just 10% more of that… the movie doesn’t overtly take a side, but the more you analyze it becomes clear that the President is the bad guy, so I would’ve like a tiny bit to show that the WF was also engaged in some shady stuff… not because they’re “evil,” but because war is ugly. and then maybe a few more passing references to the geopolitics, like perhaps the way the WF was finally able to get the upper hand was that the Florida Alliance finally took a side 🤷🏻‍♂️

I agree w you 100%. People that left this movie yearning for it to have taken a political side is exactly the type of thing this movie is warning against. I don’t wanna meat ride the movie too hard but I thought it was incredible and one of the most unsettling movies I’ve ever seen. There’s so many people hate bombing the movie that haven’t even seen it bc they assume it’s either: glorifying a potential civil war (it’s totally anti war), leftist propaganda (not true at all and shows me they didn’t watch), or not based in reality bc of Texas cali alliance (intentionally done to separate it from reality and keep the movie bipartisan so one political side can’t use it as a hit piece/wRning against the other side) I thought it was incredible and my one complaint is that I wish they’d fleshed Sammie’s character out just a little bit more before they killed him. I feel I didn’t quite have the emotional response to his death and I wished.

@@Gentleman_And_Scholar - I don’t think they Boogaloo Boys were meant to be WF… they weren’t on the front lines, and they weren’t in full uniform, while the WF soldiers at the end of the movie seem well outfitted and well disciplined. I think the BBs were an independent militia, giving more credence to the idea that the President had become authoritarian.

I just watched it in imax today.
I think the cinematography, acting, and sound design were all excellent. It’s an interesting take on the ‘war movie’ genre, reminiscent of Generation Kill, or some of the real war reporting from Vietnam, and the Middle East.
Overall I’d say it’s an 8.5/10 as a movie, and I feel it was really well made. I especially appreciated the level of detail, and care the armorers portrayed. The guns seemed realistic and not hollywoodified.
All that being said, I don’t know if I liked the movie. It certainly moved me, and made me feel the tension in a way that few movies have. I left the theater feeling a sense of shock that I thought I had been desensitized to.

I believe you hit the main points. While I had questions about why they were fighting, I understood why the director didn't go into it. I think the general ease with which the president was taken was symbolic of the fraction and chaos. I agree that knowing a little more about the reason they were fighting could strengthen the film, but was counterintuitive to what the director was trying to communicate. I told one of the theater guys it was a really hard film to watch due to the tension. But I appreciate it.

I was at first bothered by the lack of context, and found the idea of a Texas/California union absurd. But I think now it's an interesting choice. It says good people of opposing political ideologies can unite to fight a greater, fascist enemy. I can't say I "enjoyed" it, but it's pretty darn engaging. The scene with Plemons was brilliant. You can really feel the fear. I wonder what the future of this film looks like?

It blows my mind that the main criticism of this movie is its lack of partisanship. If you were able to leave that movie and what you took away from it was “I wish it’d taken a political stance” it’s time for some introspection. That was the very thing the movie is warning against and it’s ironic that its main criticism (from those who didn’t give it pure praise) is just that. If the movie took a side or demonized a side, one party would use it as a hit piece/warning against the other party and it would’ve furthered the divide. This movie was phenomenal. My only complaint is that I feel garland could’ve fleshed out Sammie’s character a little bit more before he meets his end, I think I didn’t have quite the emotional attachment to him as I had wished. Even that feels nit-picky to me. Go see this movie. It’s incredible and deserves your support. It opened a very good dialogue between me and my parents ab the subject matter, despite us being on opposite sides of the political spectrum, and I think that’s a very admirable thing to be able to do, especially as this type of movie that you’d expect to only further the divide. 9/10 for me

I have mentally run Garland's CIVIL WAR enough times that I feel obligated to give it an A+ for its Goldilocks approach-not too much or too little context; anything else would ruin the flick's razon-de-ser.

Ive heard complaints that there wasnt enough background story of the characters but I was invested in them and I wanted them to make it through. Not like a modern movie like Godzilla vs kong that happy for them to all get squished. It's definitely a well done film, with some great action sequences and tense moments. I'm okay with Garland not focusing on political parties but I wanted a little more context on why the states split up from the Prez. They gave some info but it wasn't much. I get the overall message is that war is bad and a civil war is really bad but I felt detached from this world. I'm pretty sure Garland's point is that this is possible and closer than we think. But this world feels more like fantasy than reality, even though the US right now is very divided.
