I met Thomas Talhelm at a wedding 10ish years ago, and as a psych PhD student myself, I was fascinated to hear about his dissertation research that apparently blossomed into the ideas he shared here. Hearing about the "terroir" of humans in this way really fills me with awe, even years later. So cool to see this content bubble up via my obsession with chinese tea. Thanks Thomas and Jesse for putting this together!

I'm loving these podcasts. You've convinced me to get into Chinese tea over the past few months and I'm really enjoying it. I haven't ordered anything from your shop because I'm in Australia, but I've managed to find some great tea. So far I've been really drawn to shou pu'erh and aged white tea.
    Keep it up 🍵

Good choice of short posted from this, i guess it interested me enough to want to hear some more from the both of you.
It was awesome to hear perspective about language like that and to think about how it applies in so many places in the world, anthropology is awesome

I love the work put into condensing the podcast, but even without any editing, i would love a full-length video podcast!

让 is SUCH a good call. I taught advanced English in China for years and my students had SUCH a hard time differentiating between let & make! Even in higher grades & pre-AP English.

I love that scene in Dune where a man spits at another man, which is seen as a gracious greeting to them, but could easily be interpreted as disgust and contempt. Cultural conditioning is fascinating!

This is interesting re: researching differences WITHIN China. Another RUclipsr the other day was saying everyone in China gets along and there’s no real discord and I was thinking of heartbreaking details that my Chinese friend in Hangzhou had shared about her Northern mother-in-law andddd…. Yeah. It’s as complex a nation as any other.
