Mark is on point... have used large carcasses before and killed a plant... small baitfish work great for me and alot of times I cut them up as well... great ideas self sufishing mark! 👍
Mark, u are an absolute legend. Ur tips and tricks in the garden have helped not only me but also my sister loves watching u, and even though she has never grown anything before she is doing awesome in her garden. I have also have a compost feeding bed inside my chook coop where they get all of the scraps thrown in from watching u. I just watched ur story on Gardening Australia. Like i said, ur a legend 👍🏻
I put in big net in barrel and make liquid fertiliser I can then use everywhere in garden and don’t have to remember where at almost 🙄76 where I buried it😊
@@susanlisson7066Depends on the culture. But many people eat the fish head. Not usually the whole thing as it's skull is not very desirable... But at least the head meat and brain.
My Mom (who's Filipino) used to bury her fish waste...along with her dirty dishwater...in both her food garden AND her flower garden!!! Man, BOTH HER FOOD AND FLOWERS would get HUGE, and BEAUTIFUL!!! Not to mention, hardly ANY PESTS...like aphids, slugs, and snails...would be in either garden...in fact, her roses would get STOLEN or picked...due to how huge and healthy her roses would get... Mom would ALWAYS GET COMPLIMENTS on her gardens, she'd blush a bit, say thank you, and in response, would say, "No need to use Miracle Grow, just use your waste as fertilizer...She wasn't WRONG!!! 😁😉🤨
If you have fish tanks and you change the water out you can use the water to water your garden if you don't have big fish heads to throw in or fish whatever to throw in the garden
I imagine the time of breakdown for the fish would be affected by temperatures, such as summer versus winter, faster in summer and slower in winter since microbiology slows in winter. I can grow all winter here in South Florida, in fact, it's my main veggie planting season.
The Native Americans actually did use fish waste or other animal waste using the three sisters method of planting. However, the way I was taught that it was done was to bury the fish head fairly deep, four to six inches maybe, on level ground, bury it, then make a mound to start the seeds in. Basically, the fish head would be deep enough that it would be broken down by the time the roots got that deep.
I’ve heard this usually isn’t an issue. It should be but it isn’t. Theory- Somehow the roots know to move around the waste. But yeah, might as well play it safe and not plant near it for a bit. Especially if you have room.
@Self Sufficient Me Just curious! Weird question I know 😆 But Has it done your head in at any stage throughout the years with the amount of thinking and trying to adjust and learn for different plants and vegetables that yourve had over the years … hope that makes sense.
I buried 14 Sail cats (Saltwater catfish, entire fish) side by side about 2 feet deep and covered them in small branches topped with soil. That garden bed is the most fertile soil ive ever seen. Anything you plant in it becomes a monster.
if you have a lot of fish waste you could make your own fish emulsion. put the scraps in a bucket add water, cover. I put a small hole in the top of the lid. Let it set in a place outside safe from wild animals and dogs.
I like to do eggs and fish 5 to 7 weeks before planting anything then earth worm 🪱 castings and compost then cover with freshly picked dandelions. Then we cover that baby up with cardboard and grass on the top and a weed barrier 💪 then plant 🌱 start running silica and imp immediately
Haha, the fish head has a lot of nutrients for humans to eat it too. Its some people's favourite part. The eyes and cheek meat, very rich and tasty. Maybe the soil can find it tasty too though
I read that ancient people in north and south America would place a small fish in each hole when planting corn. No idea where i read that, it was 20+ years ago 😂 If anyone else has heard of it, let me know
Anaerobic root zones arent ideal....but every time I bury a formerly living animal (or its parts) in the garden, the plants dont seem to mind. Grandma used to recommend two dead fish underneath every hill of corn we grew.
I think the idea is that this is basically composting in place. So you don’t have to move compost later, but you all need to remember where you buried it
In elementary school we learned this is how the Native Americans taught the pilgrims to grow their crops when they were starving... They probably regret that 😬😅
😂when I see fish heads I always remember that is the best part an they are literally throwing it away.. but yes to find that to be edible he was literally a castaway and lost at sea but could catch fish and he said he was eating as he has always meat first and found that transition naturally and was given a clean bill of health and his doctors said he was in the best shape they'd ever seen him in lol.
I have a bunch of frozen trout that I wanted to comlost but keep seeing not to compost fish. I was going to put it at the bottom of our compost pile.. Will be sitting there about 5-6 months.. You think that's long enough?
Make a fish stew or something..... If people could eat fish eggs.... you know what I mean.... Atleast grind it & feed it to your chickens... Good protein for good healthy eggs
We boil the head and spine at very low head. Then take it out, place it on a skilet . Once cooled, separate the meet from bones with fork or fingers. Strain the meat left at the bottom of the boiling pot. Gather all meat and place it in a skilet. Season it as you like, and the fish stock and seemer. Thicken it (with melted butter and flower mixed doug). Sreve on white rice. BOOM
I bury them with old wood chips fish breaks down and the goodies stay in the soggy wood then I can plant above it when I know for sure it's broken down and I know the goodies are still there trapped in the wood chips
Putting Fish In The Vegetable Garden? Now I understand why my cousin gave his girlfriend a dirty look when he grabbed a cucumber from her refrigerator.
Grind up the fish waste, spread and till. That’s what I do.
Maybe some cayenne so the cats wouldn’t come into the garden.😊
Add some asprin as well for that boosted plant immunity.
Cats are a huge plus for a garden. I have 2 cats,a German shepherd and a dobermann. The cats keep the pests down @@angellee9307

Great advice! Thank you Mark.
I’ve learned so much from your channel.
Thanks bud, always love your tips.
A great short, Mark, thanks.
My wife makes great soup from salmon heads. We buy them at the Chinese mkt
or you could make a nice soup with those fish heads and some of your homegrown veggies..... 😋 💕
I'm not fond of fish, but I have heard of ppl using fish heads for soups.
Really curious, so is the head just for the flavour in the soup or do you eat it?

I have been using this technique. It is really wonderful thank you so much.. Greeting from Morocco ❤
Thanks for sharing 💪🏾
Thanks for the tip !

That's what I do when I do water changes.
You need a morning tv show for kids.
Fun and informative

We used to go smelting in the early spring and all the waste went in the garden for spring, along with manure from the neighbors.
Thanks for the idea, I'll try it.
Thank you sir for your helpful information
I put fish frames in the compost when no space in the garden. Earthworms love them.

Yeah whenever I go for a flick and catch a feed I’ll keep all the waste to compost. Incredible how quickly it breaks down!
The absolute BEST fertilizer for great tomatoes once your garden is established is fish based.
When I clean up the garden and prep it for next season, can I bury it in the end of autumn and start planting spring ???
would you recommend using it in my compost?
I’ve heard this usually isn’t an issue. It should be but it isn’t. Theory- Somehow the roots know to move around the waste. But yeah, might as well play it safe and not plant near it for a bit. Especially if you have room.
TFS💚💚💚
I burry it together with forest mulch mold, in order to introduce beneficial microbes and speed up the decomposition process.
I added to a 5-gallon bucket of water with a lid for about 3 to 6 months come 1 cup per gallon in the Hudson
Excellent for the pongberry crop 😅😂

Fish brain murighanta.... yum
I thought you were russel crowe for a second

Making fish hydrolysate with a lactobacillus culture yields much better use of the material

People all over the world would do this. They would also poop in one area and over time bury it and plant their crops on top.
chuck it all through a mincer and mix it through the whole row in your garden
I've put 60+ chicken carcasses in my garden from last fall. We'll see what they do come spring/summer.
Anaerobic root zones arent ideal....but every time I bury a formerly living animal (or its parts) in the garden, the plants dont seem to mind.

I should have read your comment be for I wrote mine..
Thanks for the information 😊
I use fish waste , rabbit waste , squirrel waste and the poor old chicks when they pass😢. Nothing goes to waste .
How do you keep animals from digging up your waste?🤭as I was in England for some time, squirles and cats were a big problem for me 😅
So I should bury it in specific locations in the garden, not in the compost? I know I could use Google, but I always prefer other gardeners' info. 😉
I think the idea is that this is basically composting in place. So you don’t have to move compost later, but you all need to remember where you buried it
@JumpingSpider37 I get that, but wouldn't it be better to put in ur compost bin to spread those nutrients to more areas?
Blend the fishhead / waste, compost it and then use the compost (works for the 3 or 4 sisters)
Use em in crab traps mate.
Why not do both?
@@chrismckell5353 i dont think crab traps work very well under gardens
I miss my garden
I just planted 10 tomato plants last week and put fish heads and Chunks of fish underneath them. Now you have me worried. Fingers crossed
Will it smell, unfortunately I live in city and my neighbor will complain??

I just toss em in the compost bin and they break down with everything else

Hydrosolate if ever buying, by the way, rather than fish "emulsion".
Make a fish stew or something..... If people could eat fish eggs.... you know what I mean....

You could turn it into fish amino acid or fish emulsion.

I was waiting for a comment like this 😂.
Every time I hear this tip I just think of foxes, badgers and rats digging them up... even the local cats would give it a go!
Uh was Mark imitating that emoji the whole time? 👍
Much better use for chum than Plankton's idea.
I could just bury this deep in my compost too right?
I bury shit like that in the dirt under the compost pile. Gives a summer house for worms when the compost dries out
...why would you directly plant something into compost? It will fry your plants.
I bury them with old wood chips fish breaks down and the goodies stay in the soggy wood then I can plant above it when I know for sure it's broken down and I know the goodies are still there trapped in the wood chips
Not to mention animals will smell it and dig it up
What do all of you do to prevent cats or dogs or wild animals from digging it up and destroy your plants?
Putting Fish In The Vegetable Garden?
Now I understand why my cousin gave his girlfriend a dirty look when he grabbed a cucumber from her refrigerator.
Feed it to your chickens dude
Put porous wood on top of the fish. Carbon plus nitrogen equals win
Im more worried about critters digging them up.
nope, don't. you will get molds and pests. let alone acidity. take time composting intesd
So bury the fish a month before translating? Gotcha.
My fish heads don't make it long enough. I eat em
Put it in the composter. This is going to attract scavengers.
Too much of a good thing.
Fish heads can be used to make the best soups. Dont waste food, use all of it.
Learn JADAM and put fish waste in a bucket with water and leaf mold
Best way to have raccoon everywhere in your garden under 24 hours …..
Why not Just compost the fish head ?
Droga demais
Or...feed them to your dogs and make them happy.
Or a bear, a raccoon or a fox will dig up your beds and destroy your garden. At least in my neck of the woods.
Or u could just eat the bloody head! Simple! Heck it even tastes better too.
when do you expect to get unobese so we see your crazed growing of toxic foods works.
