@@dotdankory I'm baffled by this statement. I can't see how a 2^3 could ever be harder than a 3^3. I have both, and that certainly is not the case. The 3^3 actually fully encapsulates a 2^3 and adds additional complexity. That is to say that it is essential you know how to solve a 2^3 in order to solve a 3^3 , but the reverse is not true at all. It also takes longer to complete the 3^3 both in terms of time spent and number of turns. Given this, what exactly do you think is harder about the 2^3 ?
@@Auxified it has to do with the fact that with a lack of centers on the puzzle one can end up with only 2 corners appearing to be switched. So they do an algorithm that moves 3 corners around and wonder why they cant end up with only 3 corners left instead of 2 or 4. They don't realize that with the lack of centers, it causes this parity error which can be fixed back to 3 corners with a simple 90° twist. Ironically, my Dad can solve a 3x3x3 no problem, but after at least 5 attempts working at it for an hour or so at a time... he always gives up on it. I hope this can shed some light on why it can seem harder to some.
I liked that you used the 2x2 on this list. The thing you just described has happened to me a lot as well. People just underestimate those tiny puzzles. On the other hand, you could also make a video about puzzles that seem to be hard but actually aren't. For instance if somebody picked up a 2x2 and claimed it to be easy, I usually try to hand that person an easier puzzle such as a Dino cube where their chance of really solving it on their own is higher. Somehow though, people tend to think that that one is more difficult.

00:02 I don't care of anything else, but I WOULD GIVE ANYTHING to have all those cubes which were lined up on the shelf and on the table! I have never seen so many cubes, and getting them all would mean my lifelong dream come true. I have 4 cubes including the megaminx and pyraminx, and I learnt to solve them all by my own in less 2 hours each, so that collection would last about a year(considering my study time excluded) and another 3 to master them all and get bored of them.
I love twisty puzzles, but I totally suck at solving them by myself, needing to use a guide to learn to solve them. I find it funny that the one puzzle i've ever solved on my own was the sudoku cube you have here! :D I actually drew out a net, marked down next to it the colors of the edges, corners, and centers, and physically drew those into the net. then after finding a valid solution, I solved it as I would a rubik's cube. :) I was quite proud of that!
To be fair, you do have to have a very high IQ to understand the hype behind the 1x1 Rubik's cube. Its limited functionality renders it not only a challenge to solve, but a challenge to scramble as well. Only the greatest of intelligent masterminds can truly find entertainment in attempting to scramble such a puzzle. Most people miss the objective altogether and assume that solving is the only challenge of any puzzle, but those with an exceptional mind and a true appreciation for the puzzle are the ones who see the puzzle for what it actually is. I don't watch Rick and Morty and I think it is a stupid show, but that's one of my favorite memes I see in RUclips comments.
Yay! Top 5! I love Your top 5 videos! The Molecube took me a bit to solve at first as well. Not the solving, but determining where the pieces needed to be. I enjoyed the challenge though. That’s my go to cube when I am listening to a boring conference call at work.
I remember I was working at toys r us back in 2013 and the pillow 2x2 was just releasing. One got something spilled on it and was sitting in the back scrambled, I picked it up thinking the exact thing. “Oh I can def solve this” lol was I wrong.
I probably would have picked the 2x2x3 instead of the 2x2 cube. After learning the Rubik's cube, I could solve the 2x2 fairly easily by just doing the Rubik's cube corner algorithms but when I got my first 2x2x3, I was completely stumped on how to solve the last layer and I had to learn the 3x3x2 algorithms before finally figuring it out. I still get messed up when solving it sometimes.
You should do a Top 5 Deceptively Hard Sticker-mods, because I've often encountered with my friends, who know how to solve the 3x3, that they claim a sticker-mod wouldn't make the puzzle any more difficult because it still functions as a 3x3 and you can use all the same algorithms. The Molecube is a good example of how under-appreciated stickermods are 😊
Jellopuff But it's still a normal 3x3. The only different aspect of the Molecube is the colours. If you sticker a 3x3 to mimic the function of a molecube

Jasmine Bouchard So freaking true. After I learned the ghost cube, the axis cube was an easy 3 minute solve. The “hot wheels” cube was 1m30. It’s really cool when you develop that kind of intuition
I've been meaning to try a blind solve. I've done it with my Braille cube but I think you might be wrong due to the Meffert's egg. Same basic principle: colors are irrelevant because there are no colors its all about getting the shape proper, but in the egg im finding that the pieces are SO FREAKING SIMILAR. I havent had long to mess with it yet, but this might be a real struggle.
Curvy copter isn't hard from an algorithms point of view, but it's fun since it's not a solve by numbers like the 3x3. It takes some thinking to figure out where to move things to unjumble it, and more to figure out how to get all the petals back in their proper orbits. The only things that really take anything like an algorithm are getting the corners done.
Keldor314 I respectfully disagree. Neither the 3x3x3 nor the Curvy-Copter are inherently more algorithmic puzzles. The fact that people use tons of algorithms for the 3x3 is only due to the fact that it's so common in competition. If the curvy-copter was a popular competition puzzle, then you can bet people would focus more on learning algorithms for them. The 3x3 can be solved largely with intuition too, but it's less efficient to do so. The same is true for any twisty puzzle. Solving a curvy copter is a different experience from solving a 3x3, but it's ultimately a simpler puzzle.
I have Molecube and I challenged myself to solve it without any extra aid, like solving first on a a paper or look at the solved picture. It actually can be done relatively fast with some practice and couple of Rubik's PLL algs to move pieces all around the cube.
My Dad can solve a 3x3x3, but he gets stuck every time he picks up a 2x2x2 and ironically finds that to be more difficult than the 3x3x3. He gets it down to "2" corners needing to be permuted, and does not realize that he can do a 90° twist of that face to reveal the truth: that 3 corners actually need to be permuted instead of 2. I thought that after a few hours and a few tries that he would eventually figure it out, but he still never has. For that reason I feel that your choice of putting the 2x2x2 as #1 could not have been more accurate! Excellent list!

Why the heck is a 2x2 harder for me to solve than a 3x3??! I learned how to solve a 3x3 from cubiclelabs on youtube and can't find videos that use similar algorithms to solve a 2x2. R U R' U' (sexy move) and L' U' L U (sexy move) Edit: changed the T's to U's cuz i'm dumb LOL
T? There's no T move on a Rubik's cube. The reason they use U (up) and D (down) instead of T (top) and B (bottom) is because the letter B is already taken by Back. All the same algorithms should work on a 2x2, you just don't need to solve the edges in between. Good luck my brother! :P

Off-topic: Some 3x3 solutions rely on a corner 3-cycle (although the cubicle solution you know isn't one of them, which is why this is off-topic) making 2x2 seemingly impossible. My solution for that was to rotate the up face until only 1 corner matches; if I can't do it, I apply the corner cycle and try to rotate the up face again. This isn't a problem on 3x3 because these 3x3 solutions solve edge permutation before corner permutation and with correct edge permutation, a single corner swap is impossible.

Oh, why don't you try solving it then if that's what you think! He passed. XD And I have a question about Curvy Copter. You have one with TomZ signature on one sticker. I have seen a local cube shop offering a Lanlan Curvy Copter. It doesn't have a special sticker like that. Do you know... Is that one a shameless rip-off TomZ doesn't get any cut from, or do they have some deal too? People say it's decent, so I'm wondering if I should be getting that one, you know.
What do you mean by "local cube shop"? Are there physical retailers who sell cubes, or do you just mean an online store fairly close to where you live? Yeah, LanLan doesn't have a lot of original ideas to offer to the cubing community, but who knows? Maybe there is some sort of deal going on there. Seriously doubt it though.
Well, I mean a shop that's in my country. If I order something there, it often arrives on the next day. So I guess the latter. Anyway thanks for all the answers. It's always such a difficult choice when I want a specific puzzle and there are various versions of it by different companies. I guess I would like to support the original creator, but there are also other factors I care about such as how nicely it moves and looks. It's not always so easy to find out the differences before buying unless somebody who has both makes a comparison video.
For the molecube I just look at it like a few algorithms for each step of a mixed version of beginners and CFOP method. First we have a cross. I like to start it at dark blue at front, and black at bottom so black is the cross. Then, I try to remember all 9 colors of the cube and try to make it a short term. For example, Red is R Orange is O Yellow is Y Green is G Light Blue is LB Dark Blue is DB Purple is P White is W Black is B Now, this is where the so and so algorithm comes in. We make black our front side, and starting from the top edge we go in a clockwise rotation. Cross solution: R, DB, O, P Now we begin F2L. Make DB the front side. This might sound a little complicated, so try to bear with me. We will try to combine 2 colors’ codes, first a color from the middle layer, then the bottom. For example, RW. The R is in the middle layer slot, and the W is in the bottom layer slot. Now starting at the left slot of DB’s side while B is at the bottom side, we will go in a clockwise rotation of B’s side. F2L: BW, PLB, WG, RY Now we are at the last layer. We will try to do the edges first. Make sure the top side is W, and front is DB and check if the order is like this at the top layer. Top edges: P, R, Y, LB If this is incorrect, try using some of the PLL algorithms until your cube is in the correct color. Once completed, we will rearrange the top corners. Again, hold DB at the front and W at the top, and go check if it’s like this. Top corners: DB, B, O, G Again, if incorrect, use PLL algorithms that match the situation. That’s all btw, hope this really helped. Let me know if you didn’t understand anything in the reply section!
for the 2x2 i actually learnt the 3x3 with your tutori, so i thought "i can solve a 2x2 if i can solve a 3x3 right?" boy was i wrong! it was only today i got a new one (my old one broke) i thought to use algorithms from 3x3 tutorial and did it!
I learned to solve the 3x3 using web tutorials, and eventually picked up the 2x2 in a store on a whim. I was actually surprised by how easy I found it was to adapt my existing techniques to the 2x2. And my wife got me the Molecube for Christmas last year. I was initially hesitant to scramble it, because I knew it was going to be a lot harder to work out a multi-coloured side compared to a Rubik's single colour side, but I was actually surprised again by how easy I found it once I had to solve it. Granted, I spent a long time inspecting it first, trying to work out any patterns it had so I could work through the solution. In fact, I didn't even scramble it myself. My nephew, who also collects twisty puzzles, got a hold of it, scrambled it, then couldn't solve it, so I had to take a crash course in solving it before I felt I was ready. Still, it's not as hard as I thought it was going to be.
Totally agree on the 2x2! I was able to solve it "intuitively" years ago but I always felt like a lot of times it was simply a matter of luck. I could manage the first layer pretty easily but the difficulty rises almost exponentially on the second layer. I would inevitably fall into a trial and error trap where I never remembered what I'd even done by the time I finished it. So I finally had to start memorizing algorithms for it 😩
I would include the 3x3 YJ Heart on that list. It looks like a simple 3x3 shape mod, but it's almost as difficult as the 3x3 Ghost Cube and definitely more difficult than the 3x3 Axis Cube. Aside from the shape-shifting, you can get three false equivocations on it that you don't get on a normal 3x3 or on a 3x3 Axis Cube.
Nope, in fact the 33x33 is the only one bigger than a 22x22. 1-11 exist and are mass produced, I might have seen a 3D-printed 12x12 somewhere, there is a 13x13 which is mass produced, no 14x14, there is a working 15x15 prototype (no stickers on it yet so it cannot be solved, but the mechanism exists), no 16x16, Oskar van Deventer has a 3D-printed 17x17 available for purchase, no 18x18, QiYi is planning on making a 19x19 but has not shown a working prototype yet, no 20x20 or 21x21, corenpuzzle 3D-printed a 22x22 and failed several times to assemble it (but eventually succeeded), and everything between that and the 33x33 had not been made yet. I’m actually pretty good at 2X2X2 cubes, I’ve just started solving them, my 1st time was about 2 hours 40 mins 38 secs, 2nd time 45 mins 18 secs, 3rd time 14 mins 52 secs, 4th time 9 mins 6 secs, 5th time 17 mins 19 secs, it’s a range because I thought I’d figured out an easy way to solve it but then it didn’t work, but I’m pretty confident that I can solve a 2X2 if I focus👊🏻
The 2 by 2 is actually pretty easy because when you place the white corners correctly which is the first step, the whole first layer is already solved, so you just have to memorize like 2-3 algorithms to do the rest
I just read through the comments and it’s so true. Every time I solve my 2x2 people say it’s a easy and so I mix it up and give it to them to solve it and they have no idea what they are doing

Curvy copter isn't hard from an algorithms point of view, but it's fun since it's not a solve by numbers like the 3x3. It takes some thinking to figure out where to move things to unjumble it, and more to figure out how to get all the petals back in their proper orbits. The only things that really take anything like an algorithm are getting the corners done.

Neither the 3x3x3 nor the Curvy-Copter are inherently more algorithmic puzzles. The fact that people use tons of algorithms for the 3x3 is only due to the fact that it's so common in competition. If the curvy-copter was a popular competition puzzle, then you can bet people would focus more on learning algorithms for them. The 3x3 can be solved largely with intuition too, but it's less efficient to do so. The same is true for any twisty puzzle.
Solving a curvy copter is a different experience from solving a 3x3, but it's ultimately a simpler puzzle.

The Molecube has some interesting mathematics to it. By the way there are 80 solved states. I found them all if anyone is interested.
I have Molecube and I challenged myself to solve it without any extra aid, like solving first on a a paper or look at the solved picture. It actually can be done relatively fast with some practice and couple of Rubik's PLL algs to move pieces all around the cube.
Now do the opposite! Deceptive easy puzzles.

My Dad can solve a 3x3x3, but he gets stuck every time he picks up a 2x2x2 and ironically finds that to be more difficult than the 3x3x3. He gets it down to "2" corners needing to be permuted, and does not realize that he can do a 90° twist of that face to reveal the truth: that 3 corners actually need to be permuted instead of 2. I thought that after a few hours and a few tries that he would eventually figure it out, but he still never has. For that reason I feel that your choice of putting the 2x2x2 as #1 could not have been more accurate! Excellent list!

Why the heck is a 2x2 harder for me to solve than a 3x3??! I learned how to solve a 3x3 from cubiclelabs on youtube and can't find videos that use similar algorithms to solve a 2x2. R U R' U' (sexy move) and L' U' L U (sexy move)

T? There's no T move on a Rubik's cube. The reason they use U (up) and D (down) instead of T (top) and B (bottom) is because the letter B is already taken by Back.
All the same algorithms should work on a 2x2, you just don't need to solve the edges in between. Good luck my brother! :P
Thanks. And yes I realized that right after I posted this. For some reason I thought T meant Top but i was supposed to use U for Up. I was just too lazy to change it lol.
Off-topic: Some 3x3 solutions rely on a corner 3-cycle (although the cubicle solution you know isn't one of them, which is why this is off-topic) making 2x2 seemingly impossible. My solution for that was to rotate the up face until only 1 corner matches; if I can't do it, I apply the corner cycle and try to rotate the up face again. This isn't a problem on 3x3 because these 3x3 solutions solve edge permutation before corner permutation and with correct edge permutation, a single corner swap is impossible.

You know, I agree with #1 on this list! I brought a 2x2x2 to work and my friend was like: what sort of primitive puzzle for kids is that? And I say... Oh, why don't you try solving it then if that's what you think! He passed. XD
And I have a question about Curvy Copter. You have one with TomZ signature on one sticker. I have seen a local cube shop offering a Lanlan Curvy Copter. It doesn't have a special sticker like that. Do you know... Is that one a shameless rip-off TomZ doesn't get any cut from, or do they have some deal too? People say it's decent, so I'm wondering if I should be getting that one, you know.

What do you mean by "local cube shop"? Are there physical retailers who sell cubes, or do you just mean an online store fairly close to where you live?
Yeah, LanLan doesn't have a lot of original ideas to offer to the cubing community, but who knows? Maybe there is some sort of deal going on there. Seriously doubt it though.
Well, I mean a shop that's in my country. If I order something there, it often arrives on the next day. So I guess the latter. Anyway thanks for all the answers. It's always such a difficult choice when I want a specific puzzle and there are various versions of it by different companies. I guess I would like to support the original creator, but there are also other factors I care about such as how nicely it moves and looks. It's not always so easy to find out the differences before buying unless somebody who has both makes a comparison video.

For the molecube I just look at it like a few algorithms for each step of a mixed version of beginners and CFOP method.
First we have a cross. I like to start it at dark blue at front, and black at bottom so black is the cross.
Then, I try to remember all 9 colors of the cube and try to make it a short term. For example,
Red is R
Orange is O
Yellow is Y
Green is G
Light Blue is LB
Dark Blue is DB
Purple is P
White is W
Black is B
Now, this is where the so and so algorithm comes in. We make black our front side, and starting from the top edge we go in a clockwise rotation.
Cross solution: R, DB, O, P
Now we begin F2L. Make DB the front side. This might sound a little complicated, so try to bear with me.
We will try to combine 2 colors’ codes, first a color from the middle layer, then the bottom. For example, RW. The R is in the middle layer slot, and the W is in the bottom layer slot. Now starting at the left slot of DB’s side while B is at the bottom side, we will go in a clockwise rotation of B’s side.
F2L: BW, PLB, WG, RY
Now we are at the last layer. We will try to do the edges first. Make sure the top side is W, and front is DB and check if the order is like this at the top layer.
Top edges: P, R, Y, LB
If this is incorrect, try using some of the PLL algorithms until your cube is in the correct color.
Once completed, we will rearrange the top corners. Again, hold DB at the front and W at the top, and go check if it’s like this.
Top corners: DB, B, O, G
Again, if incorrect, use PLL algorithms that match the situation.

for the 2x2 i actually learnt the 3x3 with your tutori, so i thought "i can solve a 2x2 if i can solve a 3x3 right?" boy was i wrong! it was only today i got a new one (my old one broke) i thought to use algorithms from 3x3 tutorial and did it!
How about deceptively unique puzzles
I learned to solve the 3x3 using web tutorials, and eventually picked up the 2x2 in a store on a whim. I was actually surprised by how easy I found it was to adapt my existing techniques to the 2x2. And my wife got me the Molecube for Christmas last year. I was initially hesitant to scramble it, because I knew it was going to be a lot harder to work out a multi-coloured side compared to a Rubik's single colour side, but I was actually surprised again by how easy I found it once I had to solve it. Granted, I spent a long time inspecting it first, trying to work out any patterns it had so I could work through the solution. In fact, I didn't even scramble it myself. My nephew, who also collects twisty puzzles, got a hold of it, scrambled it, then couldn't solve it, so I had to take a crash course in solving it before I felt I was ready. Still, it's not as hard as I thought it was going to be.

Totally agree on the 2x2! I was able to solve it "intuitively" years ago but I always felt like a lot of times it was simply a matter of luck. I could manage the first layer pretty easily but the difficulty rises almost exponentially on the second layer. I would inevitably fall into a trial and error trap where I never remembered what I'd even done by the time I finished it.
So I finally had to start memorizing algorithms for it 😩

I would include the 3x3 YJ Heart on that list. It looks like a simple 3x3 shape mod, but it's almost as difficult as the 3x3 Ghost Cube and definitely more difficult than the 3x3 Axis Cube. Aside from the shape-shifting, you can get three false equivocations on it that you don't get on a normal 3x3 or on a 3x3 Axis Cube.

Nope, in fact the 33x33 is the only one bigger than a 22x22. 1-11 exist and are mass produced, I might have seen a 3D-printed 12x12 somewhere, there is a 13x13 which is mass produced, no 14x14, there is a working 15x15 prototype (no stickers on it yet so it cannot be solved, but the mechanism exists), no 16x16, Oskar van Deventer has a 3D-printed 17x17 available for purchase, no 18x18, QiYi is planning on making a 19x19 but has not shown a working prototype yet, no 20x20 or 21x21, corenpuzzle 3D-printed a 22x22 and failed several times to assemble it (but eventually succeeded), and everything between that and the 33x33 had not been made yet. I’m actually pretty good at 2X2X2 cubes, I’ve just started solving them, my 1st time was about 2 hours 40 mins 38 secs, 2nd time 45 mins 18 secs, 3rd time 14 mins 52 secs, 4th time 9 mins 6 secs, 5th time 17 mins 19 secs, it’s a range because I thought I’d figured out an easy way to solve it but then it didn’t work, but I’m pretty confident that I can solve a 2X2 if I focus👊🏻

I made an algebraic formula for the molecube. It works and it makes me color neutral in solving it
The 2 by 2 is actually pretty easy because when you place the white corners correctly which is the first step, the whole first layer is already solved, so you just have to memorize like 2-3 algorithms to do the rest

Kenneth. I love your videos but I'm a tiny bit confused. Why was the 17x17 in the deceptively easy puzzles but the 3x3 is in the deceptively hard puzzles?

I'm new to cubing so I don't really know, but can you solve a 2x2x2 just like a Rubiks cube without accounting for the edges?
