I'm surprised the guide was unaware that this was a former Air force Base. I was actually out there twice in the early 60s with my dad, who was AF, and did some great fishing both on the gulf and bay sides of the island. After the base closed, the TX Parks and Wildlife took it over and ran a ferry from Port O to the side where they were walking around trying to figure out what this place was. Some of those old buildings were barracks. That's where we got to stay. An incredible time, long since past.
My family is from port o connor , always used to hangout there.

That's the old Matagorda Island Air Force Base. Established in 1942 during WW2 and closed for good in 1975.

Love it,,, just makes me more confident that my john boat, " 1448 G3" will be perfect down there, just put a brand new Yamaha 25 hp on it, got new trolling motor to install then here I come..... fished POC for the last 6 years but always in a bigger boat out by jetties, always wanted to prowl around the back areas... looks like it will work.... thanks.
I love your videos Nick. But I was wondering if you can make a short video comparing personal fishing watercraft for a beginner. Like a canoe vs modified John boat versus solo skiffs. I know each of them has its advantage but I was wondering which one is the most all-around for marsh fishing as well as bay fishing. Thank you so much.

POC is booming right now, new homes going up everywhere,, ,knew this place was too good to keep secret forever, part of me hates it,,, I liked the laid back sleepy place it was,, but I am glad that people that have lived there and stuck it out through tough times may be able to profit from its new found popularity....
