When you expect Scanlan to sing a tasteful piece about having a freaky celestial threesome with two sphinx's but instead we get a ballad about two star crossed lovers yearning to see one another. This went well beyond my expectations
I can’t believe this show made me cry over a freaking sphinx due to this song and the events later on in the episode. Just have to wait another week now
I remember when it was first said “make me feel pain” my immediate thought was emotional pain. Needless to say that regardless of what I thought, nothing could’ve prepared me for how absolutely stunning this scene is. 10/10
the fact that Osysa's VA is the one actually singing for her part so Kamalijori not only sees her but hears her gorgeous voice makes it even more impactful, especially considering what happens...
The more I hear this the sadder it gets. Those haunting notes at the end as it goes from joy and love with an air of hope to a sorrowful touch of longing as it fades... It hurts
The kicker is that while this song was preplanned and has all the bells and whistles, Sam would come up with stuff like this all the time at the table. It's not a stretch to say his bardic inspiration songs were a big reason for me to watch all 100+ episodes of the OG campaign. :)
@@loka7783 Sam didn't imagine his songs on the fly though. He had some verses prepared to fit certain situations. Not that it takes any merit from him whatsoever of course.
From an old guy who was around when power ballads became a thing, this was perfectly executed!! From the gentle piano at the opening to the build up of the beat drop /cymbal crash that brings in the “band” and the female harmony part…. That is “hair” metal 101.
What's incredible about this moment is Scanlan not only being sincere, but vulnerable. He realizes his flaws and mistakes keep him from finding love and happiness. And even though he was able to give an incredible performance about love, he understands that it is something that still eludes him and genuinely wants to have. It's heartwarming to see an entity like Kami recognize the potential that lies within the gnome bard.
Just a reminder, Sam Reigal has TWO Emmy awards. Dude has done Broadway. He's not just a prankster, the man has serious skills with music. This scene was a reminder of just how damned good he really is.
As someone who has never watched the campaign I love the symbology here. This scene perfectly represents what Scanlan is and how he’s seen: he has amazing potential and within him there is a great deal of wisdom and power but every time he demonstrates it the party is not present (both in his duel with the Duke and here) so they never acknowledge his sincerity and he simply conforms into the idea they’ve made of him
Scanlan/Sam were the most clutch, intelligent and tactical in the campaign, the only reason Grog/Travis weren't is because grog had an intelligence of 3 and Travis roleplayed that to perfection. Scanlan's duke fight portrayal in the show doesn't do it justice at all, I'm fairly sure u can find a video of how it went on the table. They had to tone it down because of how unbelievable it was.
@@cromperer Scanlan/Sam is most certainly the character with the most clutch moves in C1. one of my personal favorites being 'I'm sorry, Liam. 9th lvl counterspell.'
Although Scanlan longs for true love and friendship, he hides himself from it. The infamous campaign scene known as "A bard's lament" highlights this. I won't spoil it, but It's the culminating result of this exact trait.
Sam played into the "bards are useless" trope. Bards are badass and masters of control, but don't look it My current campaign is a great example. I'm playing an orc barbarian. He respects power and can't understand why we keep the guy with a lute around. The barb takes damage, the rogue kills fast, the cleric keep us alive and the paladin leads the fights. We also got some guy playing music 30 feet away from the actual fight...
Scanlan pulling his team out and doing the awesome, was really well done. The song was great. Considering the end of the episode, it makes it even better actually.
I lost my wife, my valkyrie, my better half 1.5 years ago. This song hit so hard, the tears started rolling. I miss her so goddamn much... Well done guys, you absolutely nailed this one.
Hey she'll be watching you dude, and when your time comes she'll be there if she's your Valkyrie she will be there to take you to Valhalla, to take you home with her
...okay, I never saw the actual campaign. My knowledge of the voice actors comes from fans of the original dropping random bizarre tidbits about them like they don't raise WAY more questions than they answer, and between this guy being a Broadway actor and Percy's VA apparently being the grandson of _George fucking Axelrod_ and having a past as... a high society Sword Goth?... I've gotta ask- _who are these people??_
@@jasongambill4983 I started watching in Campaign 3 and I really wish I was around when Campaign 1 or 2 were being released, it would take so impossibly long to catch up to but it would have been worth it to watch the livestreams over the years. It's beautiful but I still have to find something that, personally, can beat arcane (I think that show as reach perfection in terms of production valu)
One of the best things about this song is that it hits so hard and is so short, leaving the listener with a sense of loss bc it ends too quick. A reflection of the sphinx's life w his mate he lost her too soon
I *really* wish that Sam would sing more ballad-like songs such as this. He has SUCH a beautiful voice, and I would absolutely die to hear more in this sort of style.
Honestly, one of the best things about this is how it hints at things to come. Mythcarver is Scanlan's vestige, and the new abilities they gave it, along with the rather subtle hints in the previous season, makes for some decidedly excellent foreshadowing.
Scanlan is a very tragic character. He has has all the bodily love and affection he can get, he loves himself and he understands what love is probably the best of the group, yet noone loves him.
Tears Upon Tears.... My lovely bride is battling stage 4 cervical cancer and we cherish every moment we can together. This song perfectly described how I am going to feel when she is gone..... This was a beautiful song.

“Perhaps you need to stop looking for love, and let love find you”. No I won’t do it. I won’t let a cartoon winged, human faced, lion be my fatherly wisdom figure, I won’t let it happen….. -- - -oh goddamn it.
There better be a bigger full version of this song in the soundtrack later or WE RIOT! Also to add, I like how the show is setting up Scanlan to do what most of us expect him to do after the threat of the Chroma Conclave. So far, his biggest acheivements have happened when the other members of VM aren't around to witness it. This will help is having the others start to take him for granted more and keep making Scanlan feel less and less appreciated.
Plus his central conflict of searching for someone to share his life with, and his fear of losing the one person he believed could be that person. I am _really_ looking forward to Kaylee.
Somehow, I never expected an earnest space rock ballad from Scanlan - but in retrospect, it seems like the perfect fit for him. It's a bit cheesy, but surprisingly vulnerable and shockingly beautiful. And if that's not a summary of Scanlan's whole arc, I don't know what is.
Well let’s see, He’s already rapped, jammed out a heavy metal riff, did a sultry funk-style song and later in this season he sings a classic tavern ditty. At this point he just needs to sing opera and spin an EDM song and i’m convinced he’s just the true master of music.
I love the ending of the song where Osysa and Kamalijiori touch foreheads together briefly before she fades away....I couldn't help but just watch it over and over again. That look on his face just says that he genuinely missed and loved her. It hits you right in the feels!! Best song in the whole damned series.
I have this strange and very specific desire for this to get a full version and for someone to perform it on one of those singing competities where the judges then are completely confused where this banger of a song came from.
I thought it was going to be dirty but I was surprised that it was beautiful to listen. I wouldn't mind listening it over again if they decided to do a full song.
Season 1's OST came out right when the show premiered last year. It has all the Scanlan songs from that season. This one's probably going to come out, once all of the episodes are all premired.
For those of us who have experienced extreme emotional pain, suffering and loss... this hits hard. Impossible to hold back emotion and tears. Well done... to whomever created this.
its also worth considering that just prior to this interaction pike after scanlons jovial responce said "cant you be more sincere" and this song comes out after scanlon thinks he has lost her, putting him in the position of the sphinx so you could say he is actually singing about pike but the sphinx makes it about himself
this wasn't about Pike, this was Scanlan delivering a love letter from Osysa to Kamaljiori; that was the whole point, when he realized his only chance was to serenade a sphinx and remind him of his loneliness and longing. This is debatable (for me, being inexperienced) if there is an actual spell that could have summoned Osysa's image or illusion, or if Scanlan's voice and sincere emotional channeling allowed Kamaljiori to "see" her once more exactly as he remembered her. That was what ultimately impressed Kamaljiori, and why he commented that Scanlan must have actual experience with true love to be able to do so. And Scanlan's confession that he doesn't, but wants it so much, is just as heartbreaking for him as it is for the two sphinx lovers to never be together again.
I was expecting some vicious mockery/cutting words. This was just straight up better. Every change they've made to the stream has really, really worked to elevate the material. I am so impressed and pleased.
Yeah it’s not easy to make a show based on so many hours of source material. They have to change some things because having stuff turn out exactily the same would not really work without the context of the original campaign. And almost every change they have made have been flawless
One of my favorite scenes in anything ever. So many layers make up how good it is. The unexpected solution Scanlan comes up with. Knowing it's Sam singing and being blown away by how good it sounds. How touching it is. The added humor afterwards when Scanclan and Kam are chilling. So many more parts of it too. Just excellent.
I have watched Scanlan's Sphinx Song dozens of times, and I get teary-eyed every single time. This is my absolute favorite scene from the entire series so far. Although this differs from the actual campaign, this was an EXCELLENT and well-executed change. Not only does it show Scanlan's character development, it also shows a phenomenal way to combine amazing roleplaying skills with casting a spell. From what I can gather, the spell is probably "Major Image" with a few tweaks since the visuals exceeded a 20-foot cube. Well done Critical Role team!
@@christaylor5849 Touché. He could have just created "invisible major imaged glasses" so that Kamaljiori saw all the images through those "lenses." The size of those "invisible major image glasses" would definitely be less than a 20 foot cube. I like how you think!
Definitely one of the most emotional moments so far and it does really well in showing the depths and insecurities of Scanlan, all while helping him push forward as he grows.
Is it so strange that a short song, no matter how many times its played over and over again, evokes such a powerful feeling? I honestly don't think it would be so strong without knowing their story.
Definitely agree for so many reasons. I suspect that's one change that will carry throughout. Each vestige will somehow be earned directly by the person it goes to, showing why they are the ones fit to have it while mixing in the core pieces of character development that occurred during the campaign that might not be able to otherwise make it in due to being too off track from the main story. And so far it has worked damn well.
@@carso1500 it would have been fine, but this fits SO MUCH better for a TV show, and its a great excuse for a song. it wouldn't be nearly as fun to just watch them scrambling around opening doors to find letters to find out his name, its a GREAT puzzle for a encounter, but it would be kinda weird for show. the important part is that they kept the spirit of the scene, the androsphinx test.
In the campaign the sword also mostly accidentally landed with Scanlan. Making it more destined for him means that the challenge needs to be more suited to him. So I also think it works very good like this. Just harder to do that planning in a dnd campaign.
This is the most heartbraking and most beautiful love song ever created in the name of the fantasy universe. I didnt cry, i almost laughed out of how good this was. Outstanding work.

I'd imagine they'll be releasing the soundtrack to this season in a few weeks when it's finished, like they did for season 1. Some of the track titles may be a bit spoilery, which is why theyre holding off

I have been listening to this song more or less on repeat since first hearing it.
@@GamerGrovyle oh fantastic! Glad I’m not the only one.
When you expect Scanlan to sing a tasteful piece about having a freaky celestial threesome with two sphinx's but instead we get a ballad about two star crossed lovers yearning to see one another. This went well beyond my expectations
I would like this comment but it’s at 69 likes…
Sometimes a song can cut faster and more painful then any Sword, Axe, or dagger if it's the right type of music
Yeah, but I'd still like to hear that "tasteful piece about having a freaky celestial threesome with two sphinx's". Too soon?
I expected nothing less. Not an 80s-like power ballad specifically, but Sam writes bangers.

I was damn near to cry on several occasions, one that really got me was when Grog asked Pike "But, what if I need you?"

Sam Riegel is so amazing as scanlan I can listen to him singing all day 😍💖
Way better than it had any right to be... I love it.
The kicker is that while this song was preplanned and has all the bells and whistles, Sam would come up with stuff like this all the time at the table. It's not a stretch to say his bardic inspiration songs were a big reason for me to watch all 100+ episodes of the OG campaign. :)
@@loka7783 agreed my husband and I have been binge watching CR starting with the first campaign. Just the style and animation took me off guard
I more or less have been doing it since I first heard this song.
Bingo. I miss songs like this.
He and Andrew Francis really have come a long way from their 4Kids anime days! 😁
@@cromperer 6, not 3.
Although Scanlan longs for true love and friendship, he hides himself from it. The infamous campaign scene known as "A bard's lament" highlights this. I won't spoil it, but It's the culminating result of this exact trait.
Sam played into the "bards are useless" trope. Bards are badass and masters of control, but don't look it
My current campaign is a great example.
He got to see Osysa one last time…
I lost my wife, my valkyrie, my better half 1.5 years ago. This song hit so hard, the tears started rolling. I miss her so goddamn much...
Well done guys, you absolutely nailed this one.
Your Valkyrie will always be watching over you.

I'm sorry for your loss 😭
so sorry to hear that :c
My friend, she is watching over you
Remember: this man was in Les Mis on Broadway as a child. Classically trained musical theatre actor with an Emmy.
...okay, I never saw the actual campaign. Season 2 has been amazing so far! Easily my favorite show above anything else!

I personally wasn't enjoying this season as much as the first one until this episode. Then this episode and every one after was so perfect 👌

Scanlan's story is going to tear people apart in season 3.
Most certainly
Scanlan is a very tragic character. He has has all the bodily love and affection he can get, he loves himself and he understands what love is probably the best of the group, yet noone loves him.
Well said
I'm sure there's someone out there for him. It's actually a good thing he swings both ways. Lot more options for him.

-oh goddamn it.
Talk about one of the best "Get your lighters out song"
Well let’s see, He’s already rapped, jammed out a heavy metal riff, did a sultry funk-style song and later in this season he sings a classic tavern ditty.
At this point he just needs to sing opera and spin an EDM song and i’m convinced he’s just the true master of music.
he's cheesy on the outside, but, at the end of the day, a musician on the inside
Cheesy.!? Bruh it's DandD. It defines it.

The perfect Scanlan song: hilarious and yet also emotionally powerful
Hilarious?
Nothing funny about this song? Just kinda sad and longing. Weird choice of words.
I didn't get funny.
Just emotionally heartbreaking.
This made my heart ache more then episode 3 of The Last of Us. Which was very very good.
Hilarious that it worked and it was emotional damage
I love the ending of the song where Osysa and Kamalijiori touch foreheads together briefly before she fades away....I couldn't help but just watch it over and over again. That look on his face just says that he genuinely missed and loved her.
It hits you right in the feels!!
Best song in the whole damned series.
that song was super effective and critical emotional damage
Once all the animated seasons are finally done. I want a Scanlan's top hits soundtrack
When you thought Scanlan couldn't have had better character development, Sam Riegal pulls this off. Makes me admire Campaign 1 all that much more.
I have this strange and very specific desire for this to get a full version and for someone to perform it on one of those singing competities where the judges then are completely confused where this banger of a song came from.
I really want a longer version of this, honestly would be amazing
I really hope Sam and the other writers are proud of this song. I would listen to it nonstop. I legit get chills whenever I hear it.
I thought it was going to be dirty but I was surprised that it was beautiful to listen. I wouldn't mind listening it over again if they decided to do a full song.
We need an album with all the LoVM songs in them, they are all do good
Season 1's OST came out right when the show premiered last year.
It has all the Scanlan songs from that season.
This one's probably going to come out, once all of the episodes are all premired.
Shed a tear at this,

_"Perhaps you need to stop looking for love, and let love find you."_
Wise words that can be applied IRL.
To be fair, Scanlan did summoned forth Oyssa image. Or something along that line.
this wasn't about Pike, this was Scanlan delivering a love letter from Osysa to Kamaljiori; that was the whole point, when he realized his only chance was to serenade a sphinx and remind him of his loneliness and longing.
@@randomgeneration7781 nah there are more than a few illusion spells that make those possible
@@randomgeneration7781 Scanlan is a master of illusion magic, to the point in the end-game where all his illusions can trick all the senses.

@@Sizzox That and the fact that Sam used a lot of parodies of popular songs on stream and that just wouldn't work for a semi-serious TV adaptation.
I've always loved Scanlan i never expected to cry from one of his songs
Did the visuals exceed a 20 foot cube? Or is Scanlan crafting his spell so expertly, that it just SEEMS bigger than a 20 foot cube.
@@christaylor5849 Touché. He could have just created "invisible major imaged glasses" so that Kamaljiori saw all the images through those "lenses." The size of those "invisible major image glasses" would definitely be less than a 20 foot cube. I like how you think!
rule of cool. he rolled a nat20 on his performance check and channeled the magic beyond its normal capabilities.
Definitely one of the most emotional moments so far and it does really well in showing the depths and insecurities of Scanlan, all while helping him push forward as he grows.
Unironically one of the best storytelling moments of this series so far.
Is it so strange that a short song, no matter how many times its played over and over again, evokes such a powerful feeling? I honestly don't think it would be so strong without knowing their story.
never gonna stop loving the comradery between these two, one kept from the one he loved and the other seeking love
In the campaign they had to guess his name.....This was a beautiful change...
Edit: Wow thanks for the likes
yeah it wouldn't have worked nearly as good as a TV show.
@@danilooliveira6580 honestly i believe they could have made it work, but this change was definetly for the best
This season has been so touching. So many wonderful moments
