After watching the 25th Anniversary in a packed theater, I went to watch The Fall Guy, after I saw that movie, as soon as the credits rolled I went out back to the episode 1 theater room to see the final battle. 😂 More fun than I thought.
If I’m not mistaken I believe Palpatine didn’t care if Maul lived. Just so as long as Qui-Gon Jin was not going to live to train Anakin, the true father figure Anakin needed not turn evil and eventually be a Jedi Knight to bring balance to the force / kill the Sith Lord
The point of having young Anakin is to show NO dark side. Lucas wanted the audience to see that Anakin wasn't always a tyrant, he's a hopeful child, that just wants to explore the galaxy. As for peicing stuff together, I like that the film doesn't actually tell or show you literally every detail. I think it's good to have your audience think about the plot and peice things together sometimes. Like Palpatines plan, I don't think he ever wanted to "take over" Naboo, he knew how the Republic would act, and always wanted to be Chancellor with a sympathy vote because it's his home world being invaded.
Im going to the cinema on Friday to see the Phantom Menace. Its the 25th anniversary so this is perfect timing. I have a real soft spot for this film despite its flaws. Liam Neeson, The Pod Race, Duel of the Fates, Darth Maul, Seeing Palpatine do his thing.. its honestly a very fun film.
This trilogy is steeped in nostalgia for me. Not the best movie ever but episode 1 is a comfy re-watch for sure lol One of the best lightsaber duels ever.
No, it's rated the way it should be. This whole movie is completely removed from the rest of the trilogy, it felt like the trilogy should've started with AOTC.
The one thing I gathered from watching it today: does palpatine actually care that the treaty is signed? Or does he just view that as something he needs to do for the trade federation to keep them on his side? If you look at it from the perspective of palpatines whole goal of the movie is to become chancellor (not talking over Naboo) his motives make more sense
What I love even more about the foreshadowing pan you discussed is how, in that shot, the two people standing between Palpatine and Annakin are Obi Wan and Padme. Also, love the musical callout to the Emperor’s theme in major key with the ending parade theme (Augie’s Great Municipal Band track)! One of my favorite musical Easter eggs in the franchise.
Oh don't act like you're special, there is now millions of zoomers who think prequels are good, OT purists are a minority now, sadly. Can't wait for everyone to start saying Sequels are good in 10 years, but I doubt it will happen.
One cool thing about Jar-Jar is that he is the one CGI character you see constantly through out the film. He is an amphibious race, so when you first see him in the swamp, his skin is slick and shinny. Later when they are in the desserts of Tatooine, the texture of his skin dries up so much so that you can actually make out the groves of his skin (which also reminds me of the looks of the dinosaurs from the movie...well...Dinosaur from Disney) Jar-jar was also meant to have a larger role through the prequels much like how fans would have wanted to see for Darth Maul. But due to fan backlash, they showed less of him. Something that would again happen with Rey between episodes 8 and 9 where they said she came from a family of nobodies who happily gave her up; to she is actually a spawn of Palpatine. People often say that the original and prequel trilogy at least had things planned out, but even the original trilogy did not start of with planning to have Luke (and Leia) and Vader be related, or Jabba the Hutt was going to be human. I like all of the three trilogies just fine, glaring flaws and all. Star Wars is so big that it has games, books, and other forms of story telling that you can enjoy if you don't like a few things about them.
This movie was really good, the game on PC and PS1 also very good games on their own right. But yeah, there's tons of stuff to like about this movie and the games alike.
Hey Matty, love your stuff but I gotta point out that the theory of Palpatine being the father was confirmed by the writer of that comic to not be canon. It was more so a depiction of Vader's memories twisted by the dark side to prey on his fears.
But in the movie it was obvious, they're in opera where some things are piercing bubbles that looks like sperm goin inside eggs, and Palpatine says "to create life" while looking at Anakin.
@russianoverkill3715 I can see how you'd have that impression. I think a lot of people perceive the chancellor talking about Plagueis there. However, George Lucas has always intended for Anakin's origin to be ambiguous.
@@kylecorey6218 doesn't matter what he intented, only the movies should be taken in when judging, and with that prequels copying originals, would be obvious to see Palpatine being Anakin's father.
@russianoverkill3715 In your first comment, you pointed out the scene in episode 3 where Palpatine seemed to be insinuating his master made Anakin, not himself. Then you say the originals insinuate the emperor (which I dont see), so which is it if we're going purely off the movies? Regardless it seems silly to not take the creator's word for value when he controlled what's true or not. Also the writer of the comic mentioned was trying to respect Lucas's vision. So idk believe what you want but it's wrong in accordance to what matters to most people.
The Dark Plageuis novel adds another level to the “Phantom Menace” title, as he was still Palpatine’s master during the events of the movie, but he’s never seen
4:26 who didn’t already know that Palpatine was the Emperor? How is it foreshadowing when it’s the same actor who played said Emperor in the most recent movie? That wasn’t foreshadowing; it was lampshading. His motives in the movie aren’t poorly explained, they are entirely implied by the known outcome. Like, if you start off knowing that Anakin is Vader, there’s no need for the movie to *explain* this kid. You just need to *meet* him and see others react to him. (I would like to observe that the Council’s reactions to Ani aren’t just about - maybe not even primarily about - presaging his turn to the Dark Side. It’s more about revealing how fearful and complacent the Jedi have become. Everything in the category of “Things Qui-Gon gets that the Council doesn’t,” like Anakin’s potential and the need to guide him empathetically, as well as the return of the Sith, is an explanation of why the Jedi fell. Not because Anakin Skywalker was ‘dangerous’ - because the Jedi could not see their own flaws.) Same with Palpatine. If you delve too deeply into his motivations or the hidden objectives of his plan, it’s almost reinventing the wheel. Wouldn’t that be a bad use of film time as well? Agreed re: Jar-Jar. Comic relief is for breaking tension, not pulling focus.
Where can I find the music you used in this video? Really enjoyed it, along with the video 👍 Phantom Menace was the 1st Star Wars film I ever saw. I knew about it, but I'd never seen any of the original films. I got asked to go by my friend as he was going with his dad so I went, not knowing what to expect. I probably have my nostalgia goggles on, but I really enjoyed it, and that is where my love for Star Wars began. It does get a lot of shit, even back then, and some of it is probably justified, but for a lot of people like me, it was the beginning of a love of something out of this world & mind-blowing, similar to how people felt about A New Hope.
In terms of attack of the clones I loved majority of the scenes besides the Anikan Padme romance. Seeing the lore behind Kamino and the battle of Geonosis were my favorite parts of the movie.
I appreciate the balanced perspective. If this was another bashing video, I would just turn it off because everything has already been said on that front, and I don't think any of the prequels are completely without merit. It's more interesting to hear people talk about the things these movies do well.
Boo podracing is my favorite thing in the movie man. George grew up racing cars and used a bit of that in his first movie American Graffiti, but I always thought the podracing sequence was one of his bucket list things he put in these movies. It's so dang cool
That part of the movie is one of the best if you appreciate sound design. The surround sound is top notch. One of my go to scenes to show off a new system.
Dave Filoni said duel of the fates score is called Duel of the Fates because it has to do with the fate of Anakin. He also said it’s the most important fight in Star Wars. If Qui Gon lives, Anakin wouldn’t become Vader and if Qui Gon dies Anakin will become Vader. So the entire movie is based around discovering Anakin and the fate of the young boy. I also feel like every character in Phantom Menace adds to the overall story and to the story of Anakin. None of the characters are random characters or filler characters. Each one contributes to the story in some capacity. Like Jar Jar ends up becoming a speaker in the senate and takes Padmes place in the senate. So it circles back to every character regardless of how much screen time is contributing to the story of Anakin in some way. Even if it doesn’t seem like it. But that goes with all the movies except the Disney sequels.
I remember owning the prequels on DVD I bought them local pawnshop and have tje behind tne scenes feature whare they pick they're light sabers and practice with then burned into my brain
I’ll never understand the distaste or backlash for this movie. I frequently hear that it was trashed and hated upon release but it wasn’t. The reviews were honestly mostly positive, if not at least largely mixed; even Roger Ebert thoroughly enjoyed it! If you watch the out of theater reactions the vast majority are positive or mixed; with only a very few extreme negative responses. (It’s these few that were repeatedly used by RUclipsrs like RLM and Stuckmann for years to discredit the movies - ex - “George Lucas owes me a public apology” ) The large portion of people I’ve spoken to or have seen reviews of either love it or don’t mind it. Similarly, if you watch reviews of the original trilogy, there were many who had the same negative perspectives. “It’s all special effects! No real acting or story! Dry and terrible dialogue.” The negative responses were just highlighted far more often for Phantom Menace due to social media and the internet. At least the prequels, whether you like them or not, did not hamper or disrespect the original trilogy or characters that came before. Lucas absolutely did his best to maintain a cohesive story throughout the six films. Also, the point of the first episode is perfectly clear to me. It’s entirely to focus on the dual of the fates and Anakin’s start to his journey. Qui-Gon is a wise and intelligent Jedi who, as we see, isn’t on the council due to his differing perspectives on the force and training. He’s even willing to completely disobey the order to take on Anakin as his apprentice. It’s also clear from the get go that Obi-Wan sides with the order and not his own master; disliking Anakin immediately. “Why do I sense we have picked up another pathetic life form.” “The boy is dangerous they all sense it why can’t you?” It’s called the phantom menace and the final battle is the dual of the fates due to the fact that palpatine is slowly gaining power in the senate to eventually take over; while if Qui-Gon dies, Anakin will absolutely fulfill his destiny of turning to the dark side. Had Qui-Gon survived, Anakin would’ve been allowed to use his emotions and attempt to save the people he loved like his mother and padme. It is Obi-Wan’s/the Jedi’s distaste/distrust for anakin, Palpatine’s now fatherly role for anakin in light of Qui-Gon passing, and the lack of the Jedi’s sympathy and acceptance of emotions like love that causes Anakin to fall to the dark side. I thought everything with Palpatine was brilliant it’s just not all up front with the dialogue sometimes; a display of George’s solid use of subtlety. Not to mention how amazing the underwater gungan city is, how awesome Naboo is, the entire Pod Racing sequence, and getting to see the Jedi order/Coruscant in their prime. I can accept if people don’t enjoy them but they’re genuinely compelling films and stories in my opinion.
Appreciate any positive reviews for this movie. My favorite Star Wars story ever made is Knights of the Old Republic 2 because the writing is some of the greatest of all time, outclassing even the original trilogy. But for the movies, it's a weird situation for me. This is definitely one of the weakest movies of the original saga, but I want to say this is my favorite star wars movie just because of nostalgia. I don't think there's ever been a movie I'm more nostalgic for than this one. It's the first movie I ever saw as a toddler. Of course I was obsessed with the toys and I watched the movie all the time. As a kid I really wanted to be Obi-wan, and I still think padawan Obi-wan looks really cool in this movie. And Qui Gon is underrated too. I base my longtime DnD character off of him, a paladin with similar personality and voice. I think you're also right about the coms with Palpatine btw. A lot of the dialog in this movie is just hard to understand and subtitles help. I remember as a kid not really understanding what was happening in the movie, and then discovering subtitles when I was like 12 and suddenly understanding the movie completely differently. haha
The Audiobook of Darth Plagueis novel really complements The Phantom Meance. Tho its legends, lots of backstory and setup for elements of this movie and the rest of the prequels.
I think this movie is much better than Episode 3. So much about Episode 3 just feels forced whereas this movie is just kind of able to exist on its own.
I think the outline for star wars are mostly good it might not always be done the best but the idea are interesting I think the books are the best because you imagine way you like interested of being odd
I don’t mind the stilted dialogue, or even when Jar Jar steps in poo… the problem with the movie is just the structure, and how Anakin and the whole Tatooine act is completely superfluous.
I still enjoy Episode 1. Both Episode 1 & 2 are my lowest ranked of the original 6 Movies, but I still thoroughly enjoy them(especially their final acts).
Not the same watching it now as it was back then. Now disney has saturated the market with star wars. Back then this was the first new star wars movie announcement in over 20 years since the 3rd/6th one. It was on taylor swift concert level hype with people in line camping out in tents for weeks
I saw the phantom menace a few days ago in theaters for the first time (I had seen it several times on Disney+) and it was my first Star Wars movie I watched in theaters and I found myself bored a lot. I also was the only one in the theater. The only things that really excited me thanks to the bass of the movie theater was Anakin pod racing, Anakin blowing up the control ship, and duel of the fates. Everything else felt meh. Though attack of the clones is easily the worst prequel imo.
Will never understand the "Hate" for this film.. Will never understand the rabid fans who don't understand this was what George wanted to make Maybe if critics and fans weren't so toxic to George he wouldn't have sold Star Wars to an even more greedy array of people.
Whats your favorite thing?, say you order your favorite thing, for argument sake a new ps5. Shipping on it takes 20 years and when it finally arrives its a ps1. That is what happened with star wars ep 1 back in 99 and how we got the hate.
The thing with George Lucas is misinformation. He sold Star Wars because he wanted to spend his remaining time with his family and expecially with his newborn daughter rather than spend 10 years on a Star Wars trilogy. Even if the Prequels and Special Editions were well received, he probably still would've sold Star Wars to Disney because of the reason stated above
I had to pause and research what had happened to the actor who played Anakin. I know I'm on the outside looking in, but I would bet money that his mom is crazy and refuses to accept responsibility for fucking up his life.
When I went back and rewatched the prequel trilogy a few years ago I was shocked by how incredibly boring the first two movies were. My friend who was watching with me actually fell asleep during episode 2. Episode 3 though remains an absolute banger to this day.
You "tried"? Me and my two sons actually succeeded two days ago. It wasn't that hard. We just pressed play and watched. Cringe withstanding, it went pretty well. Our intent is to watch Episode 3 by May the 4th, to see the eventual fall of Anakin Skywalker.
They use comic relief too much these days. I think it was on the edge of too much in this movie. It's become formulaic these days. "Tense scene" followed by "dumb comic relief" And they act like they have to use it every single time. Let me be in the tense moment for a while.
For me The Phantom Menace is the worst film from the prequels. Main problems for me are bad CGI which aged pretty badly and is super distracting and the tone of the film. It's just too light in tone that I feel like I'm watching more of a family film than a serious space opera story. The image colour definitely doesn't help either because everything is so bright. I also think the script was just bad and the acting is kinda wooden, stiff. Attack Of The Clones set the right tone though and this film already had a much better acting (especially Ewan McGregor), CGI and the atmosphere was much darker this time around. Attack Of The Clones and Revenge Of The Sith were brilliant and The Phantom Menace looks like a joke in comparison.
The problem with jar jar is he is next level stupid. He does thing after thing that always goes badly and never learns from any of it. Seriously, the character comes across as having mental disabilities haha it's wild
Old ass guy who still has empire strikes back as one of my top 5 favorite all time movies. Andor is one of the best pieces of star wars ever made. Revenge of the Sith is Hot Trash
I think ROTS could have been really great if the script was good and compelling, because the overarching story is good on paper. With all the cringe lines and other iffy things, I think it's mid or pretty decent at best.
Atleast someone doesn't gaslight himself. To all prequel fans, you can love those movies, but they're bad. I grew up on Prequels, but OT is obviously superior.
I don't know why but this is film is so rewatchable. George really made these to last forever.

I grew up with the OT, but over the years the PT/Clone Wars era has become my favorite part of the timeline. I just love it!
I love how even when Palpatine's plans fail, he still adapts to win. Even Darth Maul dying worked out for him.
“Darth maul shocked face”

He didn't care if Maul died whatsoever lol, he just wanted Qui Gon out of the picture. Palpatine is the only winner at the end of this movie
Ah yes the overused troupe of “I meant to do that.” See Asoka for more examples.

I remember as a kid not really understanding what was happening in the movie, and then discovering subtitles when I was like 12 and suddenly understanding the movie completely differently. haha
Ep. 1 unironically the 2nd best after "Empire"
The emperor did not create Anakin Matty. That was a ret con followed by being ret conned by Disney. The force created Anakin.
I think the outline for star wars are mostly good it might not always be done the best but the idea are interesting I think the books are the best because you imagine way you like interested of being odd
Prequels > Sequels
Nah
Fuck yeah who had those 🌮 bell cups
I just had Watto… think I still have it somewhere 👍
After the newest trilogy… I appreciate and LOVE the 2000 trilogy soo much 💯🙋🏽 playing battlefront 2 ps2 on steam deck a lot 😂
Please stop putting "so I tried ____ in ____"
You're not trying, you're doing it 😂
I saw the phantom menace a few days ago in theaters for the first time (I had seen it several times on Disney+) and it was my first Star Wars movie I watched in theaters and I found myself bored a lot. I also was the only one in the theater. The only things that really excited me thanks to the bass of the movie theater was Anakin pod racing, Anakin blowing up the control ship, and duel of the fates. Everything else felt meh. Though attack of the clones is easily the worst prequel imo.
*goes to second card out of the pack
*it's sexy Leia
Matty - yea check all this out
🤣
The first StarWars movie I ever saw that made me fall in love with the franchise I didn’t see the OT until after episode 3 😅
As I child I was enamored.
As an adult, I realized I have not recieved pizza rolls in my webzone.
This is more dissapointing than my son...
Will never understand the "Hate" for this film.. Will never understand the rabid fans who don't understand this was what George wanted to make
Maybe if critics and fans weren't so toxic to George he wouldn't have sold Star Wars to an even more greedy array of people.
@@HMMadsen Rhetorical statements aren't "Misinformation" it was speculation of a decision long past.. and no one knows his true goal besides himself
I'm team Jamacian Frog People.
"tried" 😂, *presses ▶️
JAR Jar Binks will probably still be annoying :'D (love the channel Matty)
Movie is aging like wine.
Do or do not. There is no try
This is the 2nd best of the prequels quite easily for me, attack of the clones has too many bad moments.
I had to pause and research what had happened to the actor who played Anakin. I know I'm on the outside looking in, but I would bet money that his mom is crazy and refuses to accept responsibility for fucking up his life.
Wasn't it confirmed that Jake Lloyd's mental sickness is hereditary? I heard he wasn't even bullied, it's genes that got to him.
I really think the prequel trilogy is god awful BUT you reminded me that we did get some good stuff from them
When I went back and rewatched the prequel trilogy a few years ago I was shocked by how incredibly boring the first two movies were.
Medium Take: No SW movie is very good at all and far cry from Spaceballs.
Although I prefer the original trilogy, I do have a new found respect for the prequels after watching the awful Disney trilogy.
Prequels aren't good. They just have some good moments.
They use comic relief too much these days. I think it was on the edge of too much in this movie.
It's become formulaic these days. "Tense scene" followed by "dumb comic relief"
And they act like they have to use it every single time.
Let me be in the tense moment for a while.
I'd actually give credit to TPM as one of the first big movies to really do this and led to the atrocious comedy in modern Marvel
I wish you would do this format of videos for all the films you watched 😢
I’ve never liked Jar Jar
you didnt take a dcloser look at priness Leia? Whatw wrong with you ? She was in bikinies? Fucki sake ! The only good card in that pack !
You should watch Alita Battle Angle the movie
Agreed, movie is super weird, but it's pretty good.
It's one of the better manga to live-action film adaptations.
Your videos are so surface-level
Meesa tink dat worst of all Star Wars
I adore Star Wars, it’s my favorite IP. But part of growing up is realizing how these prequels are hot garbage. Not aesthetically, but substantially.
Why...
Episode 1 and 2 are just not good movies.
Atleast someone doesn't gaslight himself. To all prequel fans, you can love those movies, but they're bad. I grew up on Prequels, but OT is obviously superior.
@@russianoverkill3715you got issues dude

@@russianoverkill3715 episode 1 is ok like a 5/10 but episode 2 really doesn’t have redeeming qualities other then Obi-wan
@@victororozco6903not the score, the setup to the war, mystery thriller, not even Anakin and his mom? None of these are redeeming?
