Shot out to all the family members of an addict who are here to educate and empower themselves.. i remember a specific shift in how my parents were treating me.. asked them why? They said they had Both read a book about supporting but not enabling an addict.. I was so touched that they were trying to understand my struggle and I could tell they had changed their opinions and. Actions, but they didn't even tell me, so it wasn't so they could out smart me.. . it was inspiring to watch my almost senior parents be so open to changing their thinking and behavior about addiction.. if they can still reinvent themselves at their age it discounted my 'im too old to change, I've always been an addict excuse

My love for him did not make a difference and as he was my first love! It's killing me to see him in pain. We never had much conversation about it even when I broke up. Thank you Chris for making me feel like I did the right thing cause I did jump in and go to his family, for an intervention. They said no. So I need to remove myself as his addiction to alcohol, porn and now gay porn and gay hook up apps have shown me he has some demons he's numbing out.

My alcoholic loved one embraces his addiction. He says he’ll probably die as a result of it, but with his glass held high and a smile on his face, he’ll say, “It’s been a good ride!” He says he has to drink in order to curb his anxiety to play his favorite sport (he’s aggressively competitive) and frequently gets very intoxicated on the course and starts arguments with other players. He’s a loud, aggressive drinker and starts arguments with everyone about everything when he’s drinking. I’m tired of the non-stop insults and shaming he hurls at me. He’s addressed his anxiety with his doctor recently, but drinks despite the medication (Buspar) which he’s indicated does seem to be helping his anxiety somewhat. He’s lost almost every relationship he values, including all of his adult children. He’s so full of self-pity and has never tried sobriety. He’s managed to keep a great job for more than 30 years, but it only requires him to be present present/sober one out of every three days. He’s gone to work hungover countless times. I’ve lost myself in his addiction, and now he’s on the verge of losing me.

True - I’m 68 and have never used (family members have and do actively use). I am recovering from a lot of trauma r/t addictions and I live alone. But on Friday I experience that “feeling” wanting to be out and DO something fun. Have few friends or opportunities to socialize these days along with autoimmune issues so it’s not very practical. And I feel SAD about that every single Friday. Believe it is linked to the hope and enjoyment I experienced in High School when I could escape from my nightmare home and had somewhere to go to ENJOY being with other people. Now they were often smoking marijuana etc. but I was there back then for the socializing. So can see there is definitely a link to former times.

Thank you so much for doing this video. It helps me a lot to understand my husband's thinking patterns. He grew up in a family that seems similar to the family you are describing, lot of people coming and going, family drinking together, maybe more on the peripheral, jut people having fun on the weekend, there's no problem as long as we make it to work on Monday. He started drinking well before legal age, alcohol is around, its just normal. His siblings were significantly older, so he was hanging out with them and their spouses, because its good to spend time with family. He grows up, marries me, a woman from a very different (but still dysfunctional family). He goes to college, gets a degree and a six figure job. Everything is wonderful, except that it isn't. The week still revolves around Friday and Saturday nights, when we have some drinks together and then he keeps drinking until he passes out. We get older and start a family, now I'm clamoring for safety and stability and he is wondering why I'm never satisfied. He makes good money, he drinks expensive scotch, smokes good cigars, our life looks nothing like the way he grew up. Except that under the thin surface, everything feels like chaos. I really, really appreciate the candid conversation about recovery being a process, and to appreciate the steps that are successful. If I had been better at that, my husband and I might still be together. But it at least helps me understand as I negotiate co-parenting. Thank you for being willing to share your story, it is helping others.

Chris, I'm so happy for you and proud of you. It is an amazing feat to change to a sober life. I've seen it in my family-Dad, uncles, Grandfathers and personal relationships. My Dad got sober and has been for 27 years. That was huge, even though, we were adults and out of the house at that point. What a great example of change and growth you've shown your son. You were so open and revealing. It is much appreciated. We all have anxiety and stress in this life. We all get in our own heads sometimes. Each day keep making the right choice. Meditate/pray. Reach out to your sober support group/friends. Keep doing the work Chris! Sober life=freedom

I quit 23 years ago but i know if i ever picked up a cigarrette I'd have the habit all over again. (Because id quit once before and i just know) And i remember that although i smoked for around 20 years my first cigarrette of the day always made me dizzy and i constantly coughed. It wasnt like i engoyed it. Addiction os so much harder and im not trying to trivialize it but the concept is the same

Chris and Amber- thank you so much for what you do. My 19 year old only son, who is my heart , has been in addiction for a year. I got him to agree to inpatient last February but he was back to drugs within months. While he was physically clean ( but not mentally) he told me he would rather just die than not do meth.it wasn’t long after that that he was just out of control and putting himself in dangerous & potentially deadly situations . I long to have the conversations you suggest with him, but he is now purposely out of touch and unreachable. The last thing I heard was that he told his friends he wants to go to “ insert name of worst part of city for drugs and shooting deaths” and just do drugs till he dies. He was taken to that very place in the last few days , according to a friend and is living on the street. My physical and mental health are failing now as I try to brace myself that I may be burying my child any time. I have watched so many of your videos, Amber, and I was hopeful I might be able to use some of the strategies to try to get him to choose life. But my heart aches because he is just missing in action. He has no I.d.and he could die and I’d never even know it. Now Im just trying to save my own life from the stress of it all……. I guess I just wanted to thank you, Chris, for helping others see the light. You keep choosing life every day. And Amber, thank you for helping so many people. Was hoping one of those people would be my son, but… he is just gone.:( I’m so broken.

I'm struggling so bad with this recently as she does the whole stop drinking start drinking again I'm on this whole emotional Rollercoaster ride. She just recently left my house with her 4 yr old son and I'm at a loss. This has helped me to understand her phases and I feel there could be some hope for her, but it's tough dealing with this. Narcissism is a behavioral issue constantly behaving in the spirit of their addictions in denying things that happened around them and my mother often forgets what all signatures she did for DCFS, and now my mother is telling me that my daughter had one of her own friends put her up to doing things like that when they can not use other ppls signature at my mother's address. To me- Rock bottom is, "I've lost everything." Typically unpaid bills, elec shut off, no gas, broken vehicle, walking to and from, water shut off, no where to go.
Friends and family no longer want to help. You literally have nothing left because you only fed the addiction, and at the end if the day, you only have the addiction left.
Thats rock bottom. And it FORCES you to change, OR give up, live on the street and chase the high until you die. Theres no 3rd way.

Says it as it is. Thank You Chris. You've had a real, difficult journey. And have worked really hard to recover.
Sad time for me. Lost my exboyfriend 6 week ago. He was in very deep denial l and seemed not to care about anything. Beyond reach.Tragic death, from Alcoholic related health problems.
Passively Suicidal is a really good summation Amber of this heartbreaking position.
To be honest, l am still trying to grapple on many levels, on how and why people become Alcoholics in the first place. It is just an easy fix at first which then can gradually possess you.
I had little experience of being involved with an Alcoholic, when my ex biyfriend came back into my life after 20 years.
He used to be a nice, pleasant middle class man from a good family. You would have put money on him, not to become an Alcoholic when he was younger.
I had a very old fashioned image and an extremely limited view of how Alcoholics behaved.
So my time seeing him was a massive learning curve, which l am still trying to process and come to terms with his terrible behaviour, and patent self destructiveness
As to whether Alcoholism, is a a disease, choice or an allergy is an academic question really.
Addiction is a massive, tragic problem which people need to know more about to really understand it.
However bad things get. We have to keep supportin in Addicts whatever state despite what happened to me they can get better..

I'm seriously not sure how I supported my addiction through crime.. if I tried to steal thousands of dollars of merchandise today I'm pretty sure I would die of stress before the day ended.. and I actually used to love that rush of pulling off a good heist, knowing you could just relax for the day..(actually it wouldn't matter how much I got.. it wouldn't last till morning). almost as good as shooting up.. it was this whole ritual of stealing, selling, buying that I loved! I can't believe I lived that stress and chaos every day.. by choice!! Crazy!! Now I have anxiety attacks if someone rings my door bell lol

I have to say no you can't be in a loving relationship with an addict. I've been in a one for 18 months with a meth addict. It's been an absolute nightmare. He is a late stage addict, and he's absolutely psychotic, violence, lying - just all of it. He has promised rehab over and over but he really has no intention of doing it. I have ended it, and so has he. He doesn't want to change.

Out of addiction a narcissist is really formed because the brain habitually does things even after the physical addiction has ended habits of trying to do things even illegally to gain trouble even with them trying to get ppl looked at in other ppl doing and saying they used other ppls help to get some legal documents mailed to their home saying they never authorized them to get mail sent to the home especially with any state id.

Narcissism is actually a behavioral. Issue in many areas to where they try to avoid getting caught up in trying to avoid their involvement. I looked up toxic grandparent and it talks about a narcissistic attitude like it not about them at all that got that all kicked off. My mother and sister have forged my name on documents of state id and a custody letter that I never agreed to doing with my older kids. Narcissism stem from bad addctions. My mother had alcohol, and my sister used drugs and showed out quite a bit being the middle child and now they behave like monsters in progress with denial in totallyh lying about things on others.

Hey all, In Amsterdam, like the rest of Holland (and like Switzerland, Belgium, Italy and Spain to a lesser extent), marijuana is decriminalised but nothing else is. Portugal is the place you're thinking of, where they decriminalised absolutely everything and the number of drug related offences and deaths has gone down at a drastic rate (and all the money redirected at prevention). Even the biggest prohibitionnists had to admit that this system works.

At about 14 minutes into this video, Chris said that his son looked up to him. I find it quite HARD for ANY child to look up to an alcoholic... But that's just me. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Absolutely NO DISRESPECT, Chris. I'm just saying that it is hard to look up to someone who is always drunk. I'm struggling with this issue with my husband. I've been with him for 21 years and the drinking has only gotten worse... Or maybe I've just grown impatient and literally HATE HIM when he drinks... But I love the sober him if that makes any sense?

I think this is really good. ..but I can't help but be suspicious of the recovering addict, not because I'm not happy for him but he is still very anxious....Dont get mad at me ...ok? It probably comes from my years of believing the addict only to find out they were still using, drinking and all that comes with addiction. Maybe hes anxious naturally!!! Addiction really screws up the mind of the non addict too! I'm living proof of that.
