    I love these tools. They are super repeatable too. I use them on my CNC conversion and ive built up an offset table of all the different tools I have from my primary tool which is a grooving tool. And its so accurate i get to within 0.005mm which is fine for a tiny lathe like mine.

    • @grntitan1
      @grntitan1 Год назад

      The sizes and shapes of carbide inserts is a humongous subject. I bet I have no less than 25 different inserts. It is very job specific. The hobbyist should use the same criteria as a professional shop when it comes to inserts and insert holders. Be careful of the import(China) inserts. Many are very low quality.

    The 250- seems to be common across all sizes. The next digit is the size, 250-1xx for AXA, 250-2xx for BXA, etc. The import toolholders often have strange set screws: M8 threads with a 3/16” hex socket are common. I usually replace them with good quality set screws and Loctite the adjusting screw to the block.

    I removed the hex top nut on my tool post and made a threaded hub with a handle and knob to tighten it. My tool post has two handles and knobs and is easy to adjust without a wrench. I use a thin hardened washer between the two and the thickness of the washer determines where the top handle ends up when it is tight. I faced the bottom a few times to get it close to where I wanted it.

    (Comment from the nimrod in the back of the classroom, chair leaning back against the wall)
    Yo Teach-
    I broke down and bought an ACA Aloris clone from Little Machine Shop (because I can’t justify the cost of a real Aloris as a backyard novice hobby machinist). Of course, the base plate is way too big for my South Bend 9A, but it came with the milling attachment, so I guy a piece of 1/4” thick and Le iron, milled it square and flat with an end mill in a collet, bored it out and NOBODY CARRIES A 9/16-18 TAP AROUND HERE… so I used This Old Tony’s trick of using a smaller tap to cut the internal threads and IT WORKED!
    So I won’t have to fight with the lantern post setup unless I am doing something weird that I don’t have a QC tool holder set up for.
    Should be worth at least a B-, right?
    Now I have to set up the tool holders with tools and adjust for height.
    THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR GREAT ENTERCATIONAL VIDEOS!!!!!😊

    I bought one of those QCTH sets, the one that includes the knurling tool. Mr Pete is correct, it's just not very good. I'm thinking of cutting the knurling wheels off , extending the tool holder slot ... and making whats left into a dedicated face turning tool or something-or-other-holder. I'll get a lot more use out of it than a cheesy knurling tool.

    Ok, I had run into a conundrum with an Aloris AXA QCTP I thought to be a "unicorn" QCTP. I somewhat inherited this particular QCTP Which, up until this video, at the 16:57 mark, when showing the tool holders in the catalog; the page featured the Aloris QCTP I have. Top right hand side. The piston or plunger type. I've worked with Dorian's and Aloris' before and though this type of Aloris AXA may not be anything new, I personally have never seen such an Aloris Tool post in this particular type. A piston type. I looked all over this tool, investigating whether it was a knock off, a clone fake but it literally has all the stamped markings confirming it's an Aloris.
    I say "somewhat inherited" because I picked this up an estate sale. Apparently the owner had a home machine shop business but passed away and his son, daughter and brother were charged with selling off the owner's tools as instructed by the late owner via paper work they were carrying to price his tools. After the brother and I got to talking he gifted me the QCTP because I reminded him of his brother when talking about tools. He himself wasn't a tinkerer, tool man, or machinist. He was a music teacher who had told his late brother he doesn't know what to do when he retires from the education system. His late brother was trying to teach him some machining until this unfortunate, untimely passing happened. He showed me the paper used to help sell the tools . They weres actually handwritten inventory and instructions on how much to sell each tool set and the Aloris piston type QCTP was written instructively as, "Don't sell this tool set for less than $150, at worse $145 don't haggle because this costs a pretty penny back ten", word for word.
    Thank you for this video.

    I looked up the double ended holder 250-116, and the insert is a single sided TCMT-32.51. The 3 is 3/8" I.C., 2.5mm thick and 1 is a 0.0157" tip radius. The holder is listed as a 60deg threading holder. I read a post where someone complained that it couldn't be used for turning to a corner or facing, but I don't think that's true is it? I couldn't find it listed in the new Aloris catalog. HHIP sells some holders on ebay $90-$120.
    Aloris does sell a double ended holder like those (3) #12s you shunned just before it.
    Sorry, I did go back and jump around on your videos, but I've already watched them and now use them for reference and watch parts again. I know that screws up your viewing numbers.

    My beyond favorite holder on small and mid sizes machines is #16 using positive inserts. This will do all my plain turning work and has made most all the other holders dust collectors.
    This is a bit controversial but I am a GIANT fan of positive rake inserts on small machines, they are free cutting, less hp, and stress on the part, and give great finishes on things. I would never go back to a negative insert on small or low-horsepower machines.
    Also, we never had much luck with the drilling setup. I have someplace the Morse taper holder. I guess if you set up small drills it's okay-ish, but for anything that requires pressure to cut, say a 1" bit it keeps trying to rotate the tool post. I guess you can put some bandaids on the pin or clamp the post to counteract the leverage but why bother... You may have better luck with your setup and work?

    • @randyshoquist7726
      @randyshoquist7726 Год назад +1

      From what I gather, putting a drill on the tool post is best suited to deep holes with small drills. Backing out to clear short pecks many times is easier with the carriage than the tailstock. No power feed, of course.

    30 to 40 years ago, Chinese tool holders weren’t very good. But the last few years has seen a serious upgrade in quality. The only thing I do is to replace the set screws. The reason isn’t because of quality as they seem to be ok. But what I don’t understand and don’t like, is that for reasons that only they know, those screws aren’t meant for this use. The thread doesn’t go down to the bottom of the screw. They’re intended to tighten into a groove. But the problem here is that if you put in a tool that comes up to the top of the slot, the screw only has a few turns of the thread in the hole, rather than the entire hole being filled with threads. So now, it’s weaker. Does it matter, maybe. But I replace the screws with ones that are fully threaded with flat bottoms, from McMastercarr. I wouldn’t recommend a 5C collet for boring. It’s pretty weak and has a short holding length. For small bars it’s ok, but for anything over 0.5”, nope!

    • @mrpete222
      @mrpete222  2 месяца назад
