THANK YOU! For weeks I have been searching and trying to find out what a certain flower in my yard was, turns out it was Henbit dead nettle. I’m not going to eat them because I am new to foraging though and I might get them confused with some other flower.
Edit: I did the research and ate it, let’s see if I got it somehow mixed up with a nonexistent lookalike

It has 1 lookalike and is non toxic iirc - double check tho!

@@kthearcher3357 you’re right- it has one lookalike called purple dead nettle! Thanks for bringing this up, I did see that it was a lookalike but that it was not toxic so I figured it couldn’t do much harm. I probably should have done just a little more research.

I never thought you could eat them. I just googled it. It says the seeds and pods are toxic but that the flowers are safe. They have such a strong cent I bet they gave a pretty powerful flavor too.

Old comment but still putting the info out there:
The seed pods and seeds are considered to be the most toxic part of the plant. They contain harmful chemicals named lectin and wisterin (wistarin). They cause burning in the mouth, stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting and sometimes collapse. They are also highly toxic to cats and dogs.
Oddly enough, wisteria is in the legume family. The blossom is the only part of the plant that can be used for anything edible. Be aware that you can still suffer effects if too much is ingested.
Personally, I stay away from it as there are so many other, less risky, edible plants out there. Hope this all helps.

3:47 flowering currANT blossoms XD, but maybe it is pronounced this way in other places
8:25 it also works if you just dip them into pancake batter or instant flour batter, or you can mix them into the pancake batter like blueberry pancakes
9:10 ok be sure to use a clean bottle. In fact, if you want to innoculate it with brewer's yeast or smth that's probably good.
11:08 it's like when they add chicken feathers to roads. So the fibres of the dandelion actually adds a lot of structure to things, I like it in uhhh genoise cake I think. I am able to even reduce the amount of flour I use because of the dandelions.
(Side note I would really like to make a layered jello thing out of just violets or smth, but with some more alkali cyan blue at the bottom, neutral in the middle, & acidic lemony pink at the top. All flavoured like lilac but all different.)
Final note, as an fnmi person & someone living in the americas, I really want to see more fnmi foragers. Maybe I need to become the fnmi tiktok forager lol.

a really easy plant to id and use is regular old stinging nettle. you can find them on riverbanks and damaged land like field edges. once cooked they do not sting and they taste like a really creamy spinach. they make AMAZING soup. great to use since they are of least concern and grow in huge patches.

I’m in Australia so I only things I can get my hands on are dandelions, invasive lavender, native violets, home grown chamomile and probably might be invasive wild roses.

I don't know if they are natives (I'm sure some are) but I recognise a lot of flowers in this vid, so they are definitely here 😊A British foraging book would be your best bet.

Clean the flowers before you eat them don't be stupid and eat them without washing them
