The Poseidon Adventure itself is entirely fictional, a book written in 1969 which then got a live-action adaptation in 1972, a made-for-TV two-part movie in 2005, a hollywood shitty remake in 2006, and several other parodies and recreations.
However, it's based on a story aboard the RMS Queen Mary in the 1930s where a rogue wave nearly capsized her, although she recovered. Queen Mary is the ship they used in the 1972 movie.
