To anyone saying the 2006 version as a modern cruise ship, you're wrong. It is explained that in the 2006 film, it is a ocean liner just doing its usual route from UK to New York City much like the old ocean liners did. RMS Queen Mary 2 is considered modern-looking, but it is operating as a ocean liner. The 2005 version is the only one considered as a cruise ship, the 1972 film explains the ship was RMS Atlantis, also a ocean liner showing its old age before retiring her in service.

I think why the 2005 Poseidon sank is because after the explosion, water rushed into the hull, causing a list. The list worsened by the weight of the interiors and passengers shifting to the port side of the ship, which also shifted the center of gravity to the port side, creating a chain reaction that ultimately caused the entire ship to capsize. The same thing (kinda) happened on the MS Estonia, where water rushed in from the detached visor from the bow and only made worse by the raging Baltic Sea, which also made the entire thing capsize and sink a few minutes later, killing hundreds of people in the process.
    Don’t call me a nerd.
Edit: the Estonia’s capsize happened in stages, where the ship listed gradually to the port or starboard side, and not instantaneous like the Poseidon trio.

I have some simmilar but diffrent idea.
      So my idea is
Modern Cruise ships are prepared for Cross Flooding: Left comp. sinks and to make left list less they sink right one. So idk how tere are many options(like bc of Storm, by terrorists) theese doors were closed. So it happens:
-bomb explodes on the port(left) side
-water floods some food storage and preparing areas on the port side
-Martin spots the ship slowly tilting
      "The ship is sinking"
-water gets to more open port areas
-ship with a lot of water, people, no stabilizers and things falling capisize
-it does is faster and faster bc of all weight on port
      -ship is turned over
-water that ship have collected Goes into some corridors and areas up the water level
-windows, doors and other holes gets more water
      -ship sinks by bow

I stand by my first viewing of the The Poseidon Adventure in 1972. It was in one of the Original CineDome Theaters. These beautifully constructed, round, dome shaped cinemas, were designed to showcase 70MM, roadshow pics like Its a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. True lovers of cinema will understand this. Seeing Irwin Allen's epic on a wrap around screen with sound coming from all directions at the age of 7 cannot be forgotten. It was done first and best with the 1972 Original.

The 2006 film changed many plot points to adapt it to the modern age, as well as great effects.
It made it clear that it was a new spin on the original whilst still being something totally new.
The 2005 version made bad decisions like the pool water not doing anything whilst the ship capsized and replacing the giant wave with a bunch of terrorists. In many parts of the film they tried to explain the logic but it just made it more clear that even the writers and producers weren’t properly sure how they were going to explain the capsize of a cruise ship over a singular hole in the port stern end of the hull.

For you who don't know, the remake of the Poseidon Adventure is actually called Poseidon with Kurt Russell. The Poseidon Adventure made in 2005 is some strange version made for TV that is nothing like the original story. BTW I liked the remake just as much which I rarely say. Actually when the explosion happened, the explosion caused the ship to shift from side to side constantly, and when the shaking stopped, the ship was already listing to the side a bit so it was too late.and when the explosion occurred, it also destroyed her ballast tanks. If you don’t know what are those. Ballast tanks are tanks on each side of every ship, the tanks are filled with water, so when the ship list to the side. The water transfer to the other tanks to keep it stable. After the tanks were destroyed the ship started listing to the side. Not to mention that the event happened during a storm, so the waves helped the ship to capsize. So the 2005 is accurate.
The 1972 and 2006 defies the laws of physics because they were both hit by a rogue wave. Not a tsunami. In real life, rogue waves can’t capsize a ship even big and fast waves still can’t do it. It would only do significant damage to the ship.

Great split screen comparison! All 3 have their merits but the 1972 version is the best. They lack the CGI technology but the cast - some Oscar winners - really knew how to act. The 2005 was an NBC for TV version where they use some of the book's characters not use in 1972 (e.g. Susan & Robin's parents, stoker Kemal) - however, in 2005 Manny Rosen ha alreay passe, Mike Rogo was the sea marshall - his wife was @ home. Since they were unsure of the veracy of a rogue wave or tsunami turning over a ship they change the cause to a bunch of terrorists who were suicie bombers. It also containe a large international cast & you got a lot @ a bunch of behin the scenes action missing from the other 2 films by the folks fixing to rescue them, people in the kitchen, etc. NBC use again a couple secons of eck shots in their 2006 miniseries "10.5 Apocalypse". The 2006 version has fine CGI affects but the character names were entirely ifferent, no preacher & no Christmas tree; also the characters were more self centere than in the other 2. A fun fact: Pamela Sue Martin (Susan in the 1972 film who later was the original Fallon on "ynasty") was aske to reprise her role in the 2006 film (which ha her on screen brother Goron Thomson who was Aam on "ynasty - in the 2006 film he was Jay & sat @ Richar reyfuss' character's table - on screen for just a few minutes, however) but she vetoe it. The largest change is that unlike the novel & the 2005 & 2006 versions, the 1972 left the boat still afloat @ the close - the better to enable a (lousy) 1979 sequel to occur.

The ship had an explosion on her stern which caused the ship to rock a lot from left to right. The ship’s stabilizers were also off to get extra knots. And the ship weighs 136.000 TONS making it heavier than the adora magic city. The ship was also in a bad weather, and the ship was TOP-HEAVY making the ship unstable.other ships capsized like the 2005 Poseidon like, costa Concordia, MS Estonia, sea diamond, Sewol ferry, ETC.
And if you think that the 1972 & 2006 makes sense, it actually doesn’t. The 1972 was hit by a tsunami which makes no sense because tsunamis form near land and costal areas. And a tsunami can’t capsize ships, especially Queen Mary.
The 2006 was hit by a rogue wave, but rogue waves only appear during a storm, but there was just a clear ocean instead. Rogue waves also can’t get that big because a rogue wave is only small. And just to make your head boil, google
      “can rogue waves capsize ships?”
      OR
      “Can tsunamis capsize ships?”
And both are a no for google. Also most ships had capsize by a hole and not by ocean. And before I finish, if you google about Poseidon 2006, google itself calls it a “HORRIBLE REMAKE”.

What a bloody BRILLIANT idea! Shows exactly why the 1973 original is the best followed by 2006. This was the original and the best of the Irwin Allen disaster legacy and one of the original big disaster films which sparked off it's own seperate legacy when 'Towering Inferno' and 'Cassandra Crossing' were to follow. 2006 - Kurt Russell and Richard Dreyfus were both strong characters and brought loads to the film which also put Emmy Rossum on the path to fame. Compared with the 2005 mini-series which is lost amidst it's half baked attempt to depict the other two and shoddy acting. Why did they even bother aware that the 2006 remake was just around the corner??!

I just watched all 3 back to back to back. Thoughts on all 3
1972: Honestly as much as I don’t want to admit it, probably the best out of the 3.....as far as feeling like a true disaster movie. Definitely feel a sense of struggle amongst the characters, a fight to survive.
2005: I don’t understand why this version is so poorly rated. Probably my personal favorite out of the 3. Lots of Character Development, Lots of Sub Plots. One of the things I really like is that the movie shows all the stuff that happens off the ship. Definitely a memorable cast of characters. when I hear “The Poseidon Adventure” the 2005 version is the version I think of.
2006: I don’t want to not like this version, but when compared to the other 2, probably my least favorite. There is only about 10-15 minutes into the movie before the ship turns over. Very little Character Development, so in my opinion none of the characters are very memorable, and don’t give me a reason to root for their survival.
    So my rankings:
    1) 2005
    2) 1972
    3) 2006

I don't really think that the 2005 TV movie is a very good movie. I have some nostalgia for it and i do like it. But i gotta admit, it's a bad movie. The first half i think is pretty good. We get introduced to the characters, and Marshall Rogo. They get developed. We get to know what the terrorists onboard are up to. and it isn't as bad of an idea as people make it out be. The idea is actually very decently executed. As well as the idea of a Sea Marshall onboard to note unusual behavior. He suspects there are terrorists on board and if there are, he is going to stop them from doing any harm to the passengers and of course the ship. Right as the terrorists are setting up bombs, Rogo already knows and are after them. but there are 4 terrorists, and Rogo has only one other person to help him get rid of them. The terrorists win and manage to blow up a big hole in the ship. After the explosion occured, Captain Gallico is shot after trying to investigate the bridge and dies. Now the ship starts taking on water and capsizes, which appearently violates the rules of physics. But it probably happend because the terrorists had turned off the ship's stabilizers. After the ship capsizes, the characters make a choice to climb up to the bottom of the ship which is now the top and Part 1 ends. The movie was decent up until now... ugh. Part 2 begins with the survivor group trying to find their way out of the boat. Walking trough halls. Climbing up stairs. And going trough a kitchen. And we get introduced to the rescue stations. The idea sounds good on paper but not in this movie, it took me really out of the action and fills up a quarter of the goddamn movie. Our characters go trough some more challenges and make it up to the bottom of the ship. The massive hole is right outside the people who made it up there. But got trapped by a bunch of objects blocking their escape. the rescuers are right on the other side and ignites a fireball to hopefully get rid of the mess. But it only made it worse. They go to the engine room and have to cross a catwalk to make it the other side of the ship. They find a bomb and right when somebody is about to sacrifice themselves for the others to create a big explosion to create a big hole in the ship, the dude survives the explosion that occured like a meter away from him somehow. He earned the survival badge but it would have been cool to see him sacrifice himself tho. The survivors make it out of the ship alive. The Poseidon sinks while the survivors watch and the movie ends. The first half was pretty decent. The second half was not. First. The rescue stations takes you really out of the action and honestly ruins the claustrophobic feel. Second. The people of the survivor group except for 2 people and 3 crew members are completely useless and they don't earn their survival in this movie. The 3 only useful crew members are the first ones to die. It's wierd how all the crew members die but not the passengers. And all the passengers except for 1 lives. The only useful people (The Crew) of the survival groups are the ones to die and they did not deserve their deaths, it also makes the deaths predictable. and all of the passengers except for 1 make it out alive. and none of them except for Rogo and August Smith earned their survival in my opinion. It's a bad movie. But it does have it's moments. sorry for the long ass comment lol.
      My rankings:
nr3. Poseidon 2006. Very rushed. God awful characters. Impressive CGI but nothing else to praise about it. (1/5)
nr2. The Poseidon Adventure 2005. Decent characters but they do nothing for the group. Good first half. Bad second half. (2/5)
nr1. The Poseidon Adventure 1972. Good characters who actually do some things for the group. Good plot. Good Action. Good practical effects. Good Drama. = Great movie. (5/5)

So my idea for 2005 capisizing is
Modern Cruise ships are prepared for Cross Flooding: Left comp. sinks and to make left list less they sink right one. So idk how tere are many options(like bc of Storm, by terrorists) theese doors were closed. So it happens:
-bomb explodes on the port(left) side
-water floods some food storage and preparing areas on the port side
-Martin spots the ship slowly tilting
    "The ship is sinking"
-water gets to more open port areas
-ship with a lot of water, people, no stabilizers and things falling capisize
-it does is faster and faster bc of all weight on port
    -ship is turned over
-water that ship have collected Goes into some corridors and areas up the water level
-windows, doors and other hole gets more water
    -ship sinks by bow

sebastian banguis yes, Ms Poseidon sank during the night it capsized because I'm pretty sure it was shorter then 1972 version and you obviously could see it was sinking showing the ballroom flood the main lobby flood and when the hallway where Elena was flooded so that totally made it sink faster.

The 1972 is best. I thought Gene Hackman and Ernest Borgnine worked really well together. The cast had good chemistry and there were personal story lines from different cast members. They actually cared about each other which is rare to find in movies these days. Reflection of the times we live in now.The stories are Gene Hackman, the disgruntled priest, Ernest Borgnite, the police officer, who loved his wife who was a former prostitute, the children whose parents never paid attention to them but gave them extravagant trips, the lonely middled aged man, the Jewish couple trying to go to Isreal to see their first grandson, and the young woman who, with her brother who died, tried to make it big as a singer. This was also Leslie Neilson's better performance, before he was cast into comedy. The story was well told and the ship flip scene was the best in movie at that time. The man falling on the big stained glass will always be iconic. Sometimes, movies being too technical, can destroy a simple story. But, in my opinion, with all technical and visual scenes, (which people nowadays are drawn to) and the cast wasn't believable. The script was bad and there was no real story line. Some movies should be left alone. This was one of them. The upside down ship movie logo was more creative, too.

The only thing thats really good from the 2006 is stuff like the capsizing scene with its CGI.
We barely get to spend any time with the characters before the wave hits and its just a action movie filled with unlikeable characters that we only spent 5 minutes with beforehand.
The 2005 was bad especially because of the terrible terrorist plot that replaces the iconic wave.
Even with that, the movie spends more time with the characters then the 2006 one but I am not even sure if that helps it at all especially since some of the ones in the 1972 version are flat out removed.
The 1972 movie outperforms both of the remakes with its plot and it overall makes us feel more attached to the characters.
It introduces the characters makes clear of their motivations and then floods the ship and really is just a classic.

1972 is indeed best,... but 2006 was still better than 2005, even though the only thing worth it in the film is the capsizing scene. 2005 doesn't even really have that. Oh, and lets also not forget that Steve Guttenberg's character follows the marks the first group left on the walls,... even though the flooding was following right behind the first group... so what happened to all the flooded areas?

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE 3 POSEIDON SHIPS
    DIFFERENCE #1: SHIP APPEARANCE
1972 - This ship resembles Titanic and Queen Mary.
2005 - Modern-looking cruise ship, especially at night it looks cool.
2006: Tbh, this is not a modern cruise ship. But still it looks decent.
    DIFFERENCE #2: HOW THEY CAPSIZE
    1972: Rogue Wave
    2005: Terrorist Attack/Bomb
    2006: Rogue Wave
    DIFFERENCE #3: EXPLOSIONS
1972: Often happen while escaping. Idk why..
2005: No explosions, only before capsizing and after escaping.
2006: Occured frequent explosions in engine room.
    DIFFERENCE #4: HOW THEY SINK
    1972: Didn't sink
2005: Sank by upside down motion
    2006: Flips over and sinks
    DIFFERENCE #5: AMOUNT OF VIEWS
1972: Deserved a lot of views
2005: Less views compared to 1972 and 2006
2006: Also deserved a lot of views
    MY SHIP THOUGHTS:
1972: Honestly, I like this version, my favorite. Decent looking ship on the inside, but old looking on the outside. Although people blame that it's low quality, I still like it.
    (7.5/10)
2005: Probably not my favorite. I love the ship design, however, this ship completely defied physics. When the bomb exploded, it caused the ship to flip upside down, but that's not enough force to do that. It doesn't make sense!
    (4/10)
2006: This ship is very cool! It really looks realistic, more like "hyper-realistic". The underwater scenes here are very eerie tho, I like the eerie vibes here.
    (9/10)

Wow! Very interesting. I've seen the 1972 and the TV re-make; haven't seen the movie remake but have seen portions. "The Poseidon Adventure" of 1972 is the one for me. I was 11 when I saw it in a theater and I lived it more than watched it and I now have shelves of ocean liner books! Actually none of the dramatizations are very close to the book though the book could have been difficult to put on film because a lot of its content is in the minds of the main characters. Too Paul Gallico never gave a date for the event but from what I've read in "The Poseidon Adventure" and from I know about the history of ocean liners, I would say that "The Poseidon Adventure" could have taken place as far back as 1964.
