A lack of self-awareness leads many dog owners to overestimate the control they have over their dogs. About half the leash-free dogs I've encountered at my local nature preserve seemed poorly trained; they're reactive insecure aggressive animals that endanger people and wildlife. Several times an unleashed dog has guarded the forest path, lunging and barking aggressively at me - a small middle-aged lady. After each bad encounter, the sight of the next unleashed dogs headed toward me (well-behaved or not) trigger my adrenaline from the previous aggression, ruining my enjoyment of nature. Videos like this encourage the wrong people to unleash.

I have a large cane corso who is very well socialised. Kids run up and pet him without asking all the time and he never flinches.
He is never aggressive to dogs and will heel 90% of the time.
But I will only let him off his leash if there are zero people in the park. As soon as someone enters, he’s on his leach.
I know my dog, but I do not know other people.
Some people are intimidated by such a big dog, and we have to share our public spaces

I think you need to really drive home the disclaimer that the dog needs to be trained properly because many idiots will put their dogs and others' dogs at risk thinking "He did it, I can too" without realizing there's a whole bloody process to having a dog reliably walk off-leash.

I owned a relatively aggressive dog who was always leashed for our walks. Unleashed dogs frequently ran up to us and got snapped at. The owners would then have the audacity to get mad at me over it, even though I have control of my dog. The owner would be shouting "it's ok, they're friendly," while I was trying to explain that mine was not. I tried to prevent it, but I only have so much control in the situation when the unleashed dog is running around doing what it wants, which often includes being aggressive back to my dog.

I have a half blind rescue dog with a murky treatment history, who has been through two different trainers (both of which have said that he should never be off lead in public spaces - not that I would have considered it, anyway).
I have no problem with off lead dogs that are controlled walking by us, but fir me, you assume all liability if your dog comes up to mine and gets bit.

In Finland, the law actually says "under control". So, on leash from spring to fall (because of baby birds and such, no amount of control is 100% sure if the dog has a strong prey drive), off leash allowed at other times provided the dog is under your control. And of course you're responsible for any damage the dog does, on or off leash.

You should still leash your dog. No one cares how much control you think you have. It’s still a large animal and it just has to not listen once for someone to get hurt, or even for your dog to get hurt. This is dumb and irresponsible.

  • @kudzu_

Leash laws absolutely are important. Not everybody's dog is well trained, and even if it is, not everybody feels safe trusting you adequately trained your dog. People have been mauled, had their own leashed dogs attacked, and they shouldn't have to be anxious trying to enjoy the same area. Leash your dog in areas it is mandated, or claim your douchebag sticker. There are plenty of places your dog can run off leash.

Everybody's dog is well-trained and a saint until they're not.
The elderly neighbor of my childhood best friend never leashed her "well-trained" German Shephard, who'd chase after and jump on kids, and once killed some baby rabbits. Somebody was holding a box of rabbits and had placed the box down in order to unlock the door. The dog ran to the box and attacked it.
I hate it when people think that they can 100% tame any animal. Animals are animals, they have urges, they have needs, and people need to realize this and account for it instead of acting like their dog is a well-programmed robot or st.

Now that's because of neglect from the officer. You can't neglect the hundreds of thousands of other dogs in america just because police neglect and homeowners don't train properly. Also a police dog is trained to be aggressive if you are breaking the law or by command. I don't know for sure but I assume from what I've seen online. Police dogs are more dangerous because they are trained to attack whereas other dogs are trained to be family animals which also means they can bite. I'm training an assistance dog currently and he's bitten me TWICE, in 8 months he's bitten me TWICE and he's a puppy. While I completely agree with you should train dogs to be on and off a leash. The leash laws on there for the people that don’t. If (this is in most states not all) your dog does attack someone or another animal and it wasn’t on a leash you could be sued. While it’s great you can control your dog leash laws are there to protect the people from the others who don’t or can’t control their dog.

I used to take my cat on walks in a harness and he LOVED it. He would literally pull his harness out and bring it to me to go walking. I used to walk him on our neighborhood nature trail, until one day this woman with two massive dogs off leash passed us. After they attacked my cat she said “they’re usually fine I just didn’t expect to see a cat.” She literally was so far away from her dogs that she didn’t know what was going on and had to run over when she heard a commotion. Had I not picked my cat up (and in the process gotten bitten by him in his state of panic), these dogs could’ve bitten him in half. Their mouths were big enough to go over his whole body.
That’s the whole point of leash laws. You have no idea what to expect. Yeah, maybe you didn’t expect to see a cat, but you did, and now he’s traumatized and terrified of going outside. This woman still lets her dogs off leash. They also once attacked some dogs I was pet sitting. My dogs were on a leash, hers were not. Same woman, same dogs, same bs. And it’s irresponsible people like this that encourage this behavior that are partially responsible for this issue. It doesn’t matter how good your dog is- I don’t care if it’s a pit bull or a golden retriever, they are animals, and they are unpredictable. There's no negatives with having your dog on a leash vs off, what's really the point of having your dog offleash? Except for the fact that that your ego can't be stroked?
The world does not revolve around you. Just because you think it's okay and want to let your dog off leash doesn't mean other people won't fear for their safety or their children's safety when they see a huge brute of a dog without anything physically stopping them from running towards them. How about you think about how that makes other people feel? It's such a selfish, arrogant thing to do when all you have to do is put a leash on your dog lol.
As for the gun analogy; no it's more like waving a gun around a public place but saying 'ohh no don't worry I'm not stupid I won't shoot'.
      Donkey!

it’s not about getting a ticket genius it’s about the unpredictability of the mind of an animal no matter how well trained.

Its pretty predictable... A well trained dog does simply listen. If you doubt it use a shock collar just in case if you are that scared.

It's about being considerate of others. Not everyone knows who you are or what certification you have.
Not everyone is comfortable with off leash dogs and especially with larger dogs.

I truly enjoy this guy's videos, as I have an extremely powerful and muscular, yet so loving rescue / sadly once abused 85lb German Shepherd / Terrier mix. Which has some serious emotional issues!!
But after watching this guy training videos, she's beginning to calm down and becoming easier to control and the neighborhood doesn't fear her so much anymore.
I still fear taking her for walks in the neighborhood, as she simply exhibits far too much aggressive behavior.
She was on a choke chain her entire life (7 years), and now I took that torture device off when got her and I bought a Goat Trail body harness, which not only makes it far easier to control her, but better I'm not pulling on her neck for control.
Keep up the good work sir, most helpful, and appreciate the time you spend making these videos!!

Even with your help and training, most people cannot control their dogs off leash. I have Rottweilers and I keep them on leash no matter what for their protection from poorly behaved people and loose dogs.

Now tell the parents of other little girls like her that have been attacked by dogs off the leash. Love to hear how they respond to you encouraging people to break this law because there is very little consequence to them.

What are you gonna do if a random person on the street attacks you(which is more common then dog attacks) advocate for humans to be on leashes?
A trained dog is less likely then a normal human to assualt someone.
So that means your in more danger of being attacked by the person walking the dog then the dog itself that makes your anolagy absolutely stupid when your ignoring the actual higher threat and wanting to detain a trained dog which is more likely to protect then to attack then the owner itself?
Why isnt the owner on the leash instead?
Fun fact more children have been protected by dogs then children protected then the adult that resides in the house.
Another fun fact human adults are responsible on over thousands of times more of assualt on children then dogs.
Ask yourself who is the actual threat here?

@@coolguy2058 But we are not talking about humans v dogs here. We are just talking about dogs. So, I understand why you would like to side-track down this route, but I'm not going to let you. Look up 'Strawman argument'.
