I remember Vsauce3 talked about it in Could You Survive The Movie Mad Max episode (at 22:11) about shooting during the day then color grading it to look as if it was night.
Just saw Nope and I'm kicking myself for not seeing it in the theater. The day for night cinematography was completely authentic and immersive. It took me back to summer nights on my grandparents farm.
Christopher Nolan was once, in all praise of Hyote van Hyotema for his dedication to the work. He said Hyotema would carry large IMAX cameras on his shoulder to shoot the scene, so that he could get a better angle of the scenes. Both Cinematography, and VFX is top- notch in Nope. Please cover the work of Darren Aronofsky, Emmanuel lubzki .
I've seen so many terrible "we're pretending its night time" scenes (Sorry HotD and Raised by Wolves.) and Peele's was so good I genuinely didnt clock it. Damn. That is extremely impressive.
I didn't watch the video because I haven't seen NOPE yet, but I muted it and let it play because I love this extremely educational channel and I want to support it in any way I can. Keep up the insanely good work you're doing!
This was FASCINATING. I wish NOPE were still playing on an IMAX screen here in the PHX area so that I could go back and experience this knowing what I’ve learned here.
Nope has the best kind of VFX, cinematography, and directing, the kind so good and subtle you don't even notice it. Letting you get immersed in the world of the film. Also, in regards to writing, Nope is a masterclass in setup and payoff. Everything gets resolved in neat little packages, which is so satisfying.
i have to say nope was an absolute blast. i was able to watch it in imax and man this was an unforgettable experience to me, also because this was the first and only time they showed the movie in imax. my movie of the year so far and jordan peeles best as well :D also great video once again :)
Wow you can see the high quality craft with the clouds, the night and the monkey things. They combined some physical effect with the technology, experimenting and trying to bring the best results.. Then many other movies use only the easy way, like technology used to make the work faster, without a critical thinking behind. I think that movies from directors who do these things are the ones who will be remembered for a long time, whereas many others will last only few years before they'll be considered old.
I went to watch nope with my friend once it released in my country, which was about a month after the US release. Boy was it unique, it sure was a ride!!!
Starting the video with "Sunglasses at Night" playing in the background and following that later with day-for--night shots was great fun. Thanks for your videos.
Also, all these techniques were implemented in a very meta-aware plotline, with ample discussions as to the relation of media, exploitation and legacy. I found the layers of these very rich.
wow really? 😂 that was one of the main reasons why Peele's rise as a director has been so impressive (especially horror) because he came from that background.
Nope is probably the best african american film I watched. Seeing how much dedication went into making it makes me like it even more. Congrats! I hope his next film will amaze me even more.
have you guys done a video on scoring horror or types of horror sounds and best ways to use music to build tension and suspense and set up for jump scares and so on??? love all of your content i binge it everyday!
This movie was awesome! It’s good to see a filmmaker who is known for comedy also an amazing thriller director. This is a great way of filmmaking that we should all take note of
Absolutely successful! These tricks and illusions, which i was not aware of thanks Studio binders, were amazing 🙌 And yeah i didn't watch this movie I experienced it. Waiting for NOPE 2
Truly magical day-for-night techniques, but even with laser precision, the same shots you showed aren't perfectly aligned. But, that's the best we can do, since there literally no way for two cameras to be in the same spot at the same time...
btw. If anyone is curious, there's the documentary series Night on Earth on Netflix that shows just how far actual nighttime cinematography has gotten lately. There are shots there that make a moonlit night look like high noon. Though I guess those cameras kind of top out at 1080p so I think Peele went with the day for night approach he did just to keep the resolution as high as possible. And by faking it, Hoyte can stop down the lens for deep focus photography. Shooting with High ISO cameras and lenses at 0.7, you otherwise start to have trouble keeping things in focus. I remember filming a feature on a 7D with lenses that could go down to f1.2 and f1.8. The director really wanted shots with the shallowest depth of field possible and I often had to ask him which eye he wanted in focus, as the 50 mm and 85 mm had such razor thin depth of field that that question (borrowed from a story I heard on the making of material of the first TRON) was a valid concern. Now imagine actual nighttime shooting with sensors as big as 5 perf or even 15 perf 70mm film... Even if you could get a usable image at ISO 25600 and T2.8 lenses at night... most of the image would be so out of focus the minute you focus on something in the foreground that you can almost not recognize where it is filmed. So Day for Night continues to have its place in the filmmaking toolbox. :)
It was an amazing experience even in this smartphone device. So what it would have been in IMAX?!!! After a long time, this is a true immersive experience
I knew there was something completely different going on in the night scenes. While watching the movie I thought how the hell did they get so much rich detail into those night scenes. I suspected day for night was at play, but that infrared trick gave it that edge that I hadn't seen before.
Yeah I agree. Was tedious to watch. Not very scary, not very tense. Lulled you into a sense that it was going to be really interesting, and then was not at all. Characters were unrealistic and unengaging
Stunning visuals and sound and great performances. I couldn't help but feel a little underwhelmed by it anyway, maybe because I hoped that it'd scare the crap out of me, like Get Out and Us, and it was a very different kind of movie. I really tried to watch it with an open mind, but, yeah.. I should probably give it a second try in a year or two.
Another great video. I watched it in the cinema and I noticed how well shot the movie was, but to find out how the create the nightime scenes is unbelievable. It is a good film but not my favourite from Peele.
Can you Guys make 2 Videos on Camara Movement and the reason behind such as building a emotional tension, realease tension and Dramatic tension. Also, Motivational and Unmotivated Camara Movement.

Maaaaaaan I cant believe all the nights scenes werent even shot in night that completely floors me how convincing filmmaking has got in
Aw so they weren't? 🥺 It would've been more impressive if they were 😔

I mean it was clearly apparant that it was day for night shot. However it's the cleanest and the most effective one I've ever seen.

That night scene done in day light bit was mindblowing. This was one hell of a spectacle for me. Easily one of the best done by Jordan Peele.
One of the modern techniques that will push cinema!

This gives a whole new meaning to the film’s use of “Sunglasses at Night” 😎
it's a cool technique!

NOPE is not a movie dedicated to Syfy lovers, it's a movie dedicated to filmmakers, and why movie making is pure love.
filmmakers and film-lovers!
We all know that future movies will be using the same technique moving forward regarding their night scenes. Well done Nope cinematographer.
Saw this three times in IMAX. Well done Peele and Hoyte.
🔥🔥
One of the best movies this year fr
It's up there!
I feel as though Jordan Peele originally intended 'NOPE' to be called 'Don't Look Up', but Netflix beat him to the chase lol
haha the ads does look like it

I just discovered Key and Peele and was pleasantly surprised knowing Jordan directed Get Out and then Nope
He also did Us, and you definitely need to see Keanu as well

This is one of them films where the mystery is better than the payoff.
