  • Hello I’m Sophie. Welcome to the beginning of my sewing journey, come along with me through all the mistakes and seam ripping! And hopefully feel some solidarity that there are others bumbling their way through this hobby.

Inspired by Emma (2020) and Bridgerton, as I’m sure many others have been, I have started sewing Regency clothes. As I am quite new to historical costuming this is my first time making something from this period.
I made short stays in the last video, and while they turned out great, they do not look good under regency clothes because of my larger bust. So I’ve decided to start again from scratch. This video is about constructing Regency era stays using the Redthreaded pattern. I am using the size 18 pattern as well as the plus size materials kit from Redthreaded. I had to make adjustments to the pattern pieces to accommodate a more plus size figure.
Disclaimer I am very much an amateur
sewist and make many mistakes and use questionable at best techniques

Oh how I wanted one of these! It's a real dream, but I won't be able to fulfill it, my sick back hurts too much, my spine doesn't match anymore with seams or projects on the sewing machine.
    Beautiful piece, I loved it!

I made a mock up last year and had some of the same issues/questions! My stays didn’t fit quite right in the hips, so I had to adjust the pattern gores in the front since they were much too big and add 2 gores in the back to get it to lace up with the same amount of gap from the top to bottom. I find that hand stitching the gores instead of machine stitching gives me better control of the fiddly bits. I machined my mock up for speed but I love handstitching!

To answer your eyelet questions. Eyelets are one piece grommets are 2 piece. They are much stronger that way. They do come in standard sizes. I like 00 size for corsets.

Honestly BLESS YOU for making this video! You and I both got caught in the same spots - including the drawstring - and I've found the directions ultra deceiving, even as an intermediate-level seamstress. I've honestly learned more from other people's videos (including yours) than Redthreaded's directions.. so thank you for posting this! It helped me finish my short stays!

Something about reading sewing instructions will always just be so confusing for me, it’s so much easier to see someone make it. I’m glad it helped ☺️

I found your video very helpful. I feel ready to tackle a corset. I was trying to decide between the Redthreaded 1860's pattern with gored corset pattern or the Victorian overbust. Your gores turned out so nice that I think I'll be going with the gored pattern and supply kit. I hope you make more videos soon.

As someone with a similar silhouette I did the same. Tried short stays but they didn't work for me so made long stays. At least I knew what size bust gore's I needed from the short stays to put in the long stays.
My next evolution is long stays with split front busk just to make getting into them easier by myself.
