If anyone was wondering about the Japanese text on the left, it roughly translates to "As refreshing as the morning sun, Dorothy Ashby - Queen of Jazz Harp" Edit: The first part should actually be the title of the song "Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise"
I was not surprised to read about Dorothy Ashby's interest in koto music and instrument. I see the interest is mutual and I would'nt be surprised her albums are uber-cool in Japan. And personally, I hope Takemitsu knew of her music, because I'm certain her would have loved it.
0:00 Django 5:21 Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise 8:48 Round Midnight 14:03 Blues For Mr. K 18:03 My Favourite Things 23:51 September In The Rain 28:03 misty 31:37 amor en paz
Hot stressful day, with loud neighbors doing loud auto engine stuff, stressful family arguing at each other & stomping on the floor right above me, but I knew just what to do; draw the drapes, turn on the fan, stretch out on my bed with my wonderful fur baby bulldog, sip on a glass of champagne (hey, it is a Friday late afternoon, after all), & tune into some Dorothy Ashby, ahhh~ Thank you so much, Marcel the Drunkard, for being part of this prescription!
One of my favourite albums of all time. There is also a companion album called "Aranjuez" that contain more tracks from the same sessions as "Django/Misty". As far as I know, these were the only recordings she made that featured her playing solo harp. They were recorded shortly before she passed away from cancer and were only released in Japan, which is why not a lot of people know about them. Some critics dismissed these late recordings as lackluster compared to her peak period "Hip Harp" "Afro Harpin" "Rubaiyat", but I think they form a magnificent coda to an illustrious career, and prove that she had lost none of her skill even at the end. It's just a shame that it's taken so long for people to finally acknowledge her talent.
wow.. i had no idea the story behind these recordings. Sad and very beautiful. thank you so much for providing context to one of my favorite albums of all time as well. Hope you're having a great day :)
I have never heard of Dorothy Ashby until today. I was listening to Alice Coltrane and in the comments someone mentioned Dorothy's name and I'm glad they did. This is beautiful
I feel like a fool - I consider myself knowledgeable in the jazz arena - do how come I've never heard of Dorthy Ashby? No reference to, or recommendation of? What the hell? Just per chance, happened to bump on to her name on UTube...what a find. She had it going on in a big way...can't wait to hear more of her, & I will!
So many great musicians out there, now and in the past. This one, Dorothy Ashby, did not achieve fame, yet I bet she knew she "had it". Her recordings reveal a great talent to those of us who never knew her or saw her play. This solo album is outstanding.
hank You so much for Dorothys celestial Jazz! - I am 70ty now and had 1 LPRecord, >Jazz on Harp< by D.A. in the very late 60ties! Unfortunately circumstances seperated me of it and it seems >I had "forgotten" that swing for decades! Don't know why! BUT: - A few years ago I only found little of her on youtube, but now ....! Wow! What an earfeast!
Giving credit where credit is due, Dorothy Ashby is as wonderful as she is underrepresented. Hard to think that this choice of harp is partially due to male musicians putting pressure on women not to play the same instruments as men. Imagine someone telling you which instruments you can or cannot play. Great job in spite of that oppressive trend.
Django is part of my life’s soundtrack. First time I heard it was on the Hot House Flowers Album by Wynton Marsalis. But wow, do I love Ms. Ashby’s version.!!! Like air.
Of all the harp players in the world, I like the sound played by Dorothy Ashby the most. I was moved when I heard Osamu Kitajima's Tenyo solo on his album The Source.CBS SONY 1987
I came here to look for something to sample to my Akai MPC during a cold, snowy night and instead I made a cup of tea and ended up listening to this whole album haha. I just love Jazz music, cheers! Thanks again I had never heard of Dorothy Ashby before and I just loved this album, thanks again. The joys of record digging and/or youtube, find some amazing artists you never would have found :)
Rachael London I'm Glad you've enjoyed it. If you like the harp sound implemented in jazz, you should definitely check some koto tracks if you haven't already. It's not quite a harp but it comes close. ;)
The Moving Finger was the first Dorothy Ashby song I'd heard. Her koto work on the Rubaiyat album was my introduction. But I had never heard this one! It's lovely.
wow never heard this album before either but i keep recognizing snippets from songs that have sampled it... now i know where all those songs found their melodies.. love it!
do nujabes & onra sample this album? what songs are you thinking of? django - hexsagon was the first one i recognized, then capture l'oiseau - ours samplus, both great reworks of dorthy's beautiful melodies
Thank you, Marcel. I had never encountered the artistry of Dorothy Ashby before. Thank you Facebook, for introducing me to Marcel, whom I am sure will expand my musical universe.
Found this gem on another channel with about 7 followers...though i was one of the lucky few that got to experience this magical music. Music is meant to be free, shared, and appreciated. No matter what you listen to. Every era has so many unqiue different artists to emerge from. Some are on the radio for the mainstream, and some are hidden somewhere in the depths of the vast infinite expanse called records shops and well, the internet is a good one too. LOVE ALL MUSIC AND YOU WILL LOVE ALL MANKIND
I am doing a master and sometimes when I am writing essays and pieces of research I lack inspiration! Thank you for your playlists that have been a new source of inspiration/concentration/pleasure to work to me :) they are fabulous! Cheers !

Once I cried At the thought I was foolish and proud And let you say goodbye. Then one day, From my infinite sadness, you came And brought me love again. Now I know That no matter whatever befalls, I'll never let you go. I will hold you close... Night and day... Because love Is the saddest thing When it goes away. I will hold you close... Another one of my favorites is Grant Green’s version on Idle Moments.
its hard to comprehend or compare such beautiful music, pushes the boundaries of what sounds a single human is capable of producing
hands down, the best of the popular genre harpists. nobody did jazz like dorothy, not on the harp.
I've just discovered this woman's wonderful music and I'm in love. Thanks for posting. Greetings from Mexico!
was listening to Afro harping all these years not realizing this existed, thanks for upload!
