Moral of the story, nothing works. The addict has to want it for themselves. I've tried ALL approaches mentioned and if you're snuggly to the porcupine, it emboldens them bc there are NO consequences. Alternatively, nagging or yelling (obviously) doesn't work either. An addict uses ANYTHING as an excuse or reason to use. Heck! Some don't even need that! lol, Great video though for those who have an addict who wants to be sober. Thank you. I genuinely like your channel. Long time viewer here.

I suffer from chronic pain. It was tempting to use alcohol to relieve pain and sleep. Part of my recovery is physical therapy. Yes, I still have pain but it's less intense and goes away faster than it used to. Thinking about dopamine vs serotonin is a great way to think of how I can keep getting better. Thank you.

This is incredibly useful to those of you listening out there. I have someone that has been doing meth for years and only recently I have been able to snuggle with their porcupine quills. I am not reactive, but stoic. I express love. I condone good behavior. Before this I did all the things you are not supposed to do as mentioned in this video and everything only got worse and worse. I am building trust and a relationship now. I am trying to build self-esteem in my loved one. Things are improving! Said person is making an honest effort. I can tell they are using less. There was even a week long stretch without meth.

I love this and agree with it 120 percent! I tried the anger and the ultimatums. Everybody walks away sad. What happens when you give an ultimatum and they choose the drugs? They feel like they don't have another shot and you're angry. It's a vicious cycle. This is healthier.

You might think about using substance use disorder (SUD) in place of Addiction. The word Addiction is not medical and carries a ton of stigma, especially if you're intending for these video's to be educational to those who have not directly dealt with a SUD's diagnosis. I am not trying to be rude or tell you what to do on your own channel, I just worry that using Addiction/ Addict and other stigmatizing terminology in educational setting might cause more harm than you may have intended. Thank you for you work.

As a subscriber, someone in recovery for 6+ years, a SMART Recovery Facilitator and Trainer, and someone who was diagnosed with ADHD 4 months ago I have a few comments.
    1. Those of us with that dopamine deficiency from ADHD tend to chase dopamine just to feel "normal". Which probably has a lot to do with why 50+% of us suffer from a use disorder. I still chase dopamine but in good ways. So would it be more accurate to say we don't want to chase the negative dopamine thoughts and activities?
    2. I LOVE your analogy Cheetos vs Salad. I think I might use that in my meetings. Brilliant.
    3. Also the CRAFT stuff. We really need to get that message out there as much as possible. I'm so happy that you fight that battle so often. You give us a great place to point to that helps explain that.

I have a question, but I work during your videos the next couple weeks. So hopefully if I post it I can get your insight... I've been working your tools and I've come to a brick wall with my husband. He refuses to discuss some of his past but those around his have figured out that's what is his biggest trigger and you have said they drink to forget it and then it just makes it worse and that also naming it takes away that fear. Is there a tool you use to help them state what they are trying to hide deep down in their thoughts?

Have you ever done a video where an addict becomes sober but substitutes the addiction for workaholism? My husband has become sober for 3months. This is the 3rd longest time but he's subbed it for work. He's addicted to work. He works 6days a week and sometimes he'll even work on his day off. He talks about works. Plans work. Talks to people from work. I can't even have a convo without him texting or taking a phone call.
I love that he's sober but gosh it's hard to appreciate when he is still unavailable physically and emotionally because now it's work. It's great. I talk to him asking for us to spend some time together. Honestly I'd be okay with watching a single episode of something on Netflix. But he doesn't want to instead he'll say, we can only spend time in sunday's and like I said, but he'll even plan his sundays solo taking extra work. But during the work week, He needs time to himself. Now that he's sober, I'd like to focus on healing the marriage but maybe its too soon for him. Or I dunno. It just sucks to be isolated all the time. All I got are my pets, art, guitar, and my family I call periodically when I feel alone.
But yeah, I'd like to know what your thoughts are on subbing addiction for work.

For people who have an addicted one. Try to get some laughter and lightness in your life. Watch old funny films, jokes, songs no matter how silly and stupid, rude and unpolitically and childish they are. Preferably with friends.
We Brits are famous for our sense of humour. We have to be, to cope with our weather.
So folks try and have a good old belly laugh. Costs nothing and does you the world of good.

When I clicked on this video, I thought it would help me but they didn’t turned out that I was trying to help someone else which we all know is impossible, so yeah, won’t be watching anymore videos but that’s OK cause I’ve already found my way out and it was nothing to do with serotonin or dopamine, at least, never was I looking at them I’m sure it was magnifying one of the other, and stomping on the other one.
