January 2009 Diego files a report on his Guatemalan birth family. He was adopted from Guatemala in 1999. We went back in 2003, 2005 this trip in 2009, 2015 and 2022 .
We have met his birth mother and his Guatemalan siblings Juan, Julia and Josefa. The 2009 trip was the first time we met relatives from his birth father's side. His birth mother is very careful about not allowing us to meet his birth father. Meeting his paternal relatives was unplanned.
On our 2005 trip we heard from Diego's Guatemalan brother Juan that his father had kicked Julia in the stomach and had killed her. We didn't realize there was more to the story until 2010.
While i don't doubt that Julia's father kicked her, we're almost certain what killed her was an untreated medical condition that Diego too suffered from when he turned 12. We discovered this the hard way.
At the time of this report all those struggles were part of the future unknown.
