I think this championship fundamentally broke Carl. He had another shot at it in the final race in 2016, and after he got wrecked at Homestead he was done. In Cup he finished 3rd in 2005 and 2nd in both 2008 and 2011. In Nationwide he finshed 3rd in 2005, 2nd in 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2010, and won the championship in 2007. He also finished top 5 in points 4 other times in the top 3 series. I think coming so close so many times is what led him to retire early, with 2011 being the tipping point, and the 2016 crash being the last staw (obviously). It's a shame, I think if he had won in 2011 we'd still see him out there today. Definitely a generational talent, and a Hall of Fame career (72 wins in the top 3 series in just 15 years), but I'd love to see him on track again.
Poor Carl guy deserved so many championships but that's what a fake points system gets you I don't blame him for leaving because it's just become a joke at this point.
As the years go by I'm more and more thankful and happy that we had Allen Bestwick calling this race. Anyone else would have absolutely ruined it.
Mike Joy would’ve been great too
That's a big no for me.
@@Cruz55360I love Allen

Where there's smoke there's fire and Tony was giving it to Carl
I remember this well.
I was at that race an what a race it was an Tony smoke got it done that night wheelman
Carl may not have won any championships (he should have won at least one) but he isnt a sore looser about it.

Could have won in 2016 if it wasn't for another of his bad blocks.
@@darrellpowers6840 It was actually 2016. But yeah he had serious chances to win the 2005, 2008, 2010, 2011, and 2016 championships.
