I swear, listening to Alana eases my nerves. I’m so fed up with politics everywhere, so I come to this channel to hear her ramble on about books and anything else that pops into her mind, and it is a breath of fresh air these days.
@@YourFriendinFL aw 🥺 thank you!! This makes me happy! I’m glad ❤️ without getting preachy I give God the credit for that. Regardless of what’s going on He keeps me at peace and that’s what you see.
I've been anticipating your new video, and I just have to say that we, in terms of your faithful followers 😇 need new bookshelf tour. We need to see every book you own.. 😊😘
I'm reading Dr. Zivago and have mixed feelings about it. It may be the translation. Curious to see how you like it. The Books of Jacob is phenomenal! I suggest you take notes while reading it.
As usual you have a great set of books here! I love the idea of buying books as souvenirs and keeping the receipt! Im reading my first Japanese work of the year- No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai
The main thing I love about this channel is that All Fours and James aren't mentioned in a summary of books of interest for the year. Every other list on every platform is the same, more or less. On this channel I gain taste and perspective. I tried reading Kairos towards the end of the year and found it to be an example of creative self indulgence. However after listening to your description of the word "kairos" I have renewed interest and will go back to the library to check it out sometime this year.
As a Polish person (born and raised there) I appreciate when people try to learn how to properly pronounce our names, especially the ones with ton of consonants. But even more, as in your case, I appreciate that you don't butcher those names if you don't remember the pronunciation.
You are most impressive Miss Alana. That's some list. Tokarczuk is amazing. I know people don't like Flights, but man... if you get into it, if you catch what she's doing, it's so good. Just remember in Polish "CZ" is pronounced like "CH" in English. So, Tokarchuk. I can't wait for these reviews. I really want to read Is Mother Dead? but I won't have time. Thanks for the video. It's very exciting. I love Meditations. He has such a good quote on treating employees. He is all about respect; bad behaviour always catches up with all of us.
@@martasoltys9091 thank you Marty! I’ll be coming to you for my Polish pronunciations! I really want to read all of Olga’s books. Meditations is so good!
10:40 currently reading Doctor Zhivago and it’s unexpectedly smooth and I’m enjoying it. The hard part about the book is the historical background but so far so good.
I have also been s lowing down my book buying ALOT over the past year. I really want to know and reread the books that I already have on my shelf. I definitely bought way more than this in 2024, but hopefully will pull back in 2025. This video has inspired me to keep track for 2025.
I swear your vids are like fresh air. That's odd for me to say since I'm still new to book community stuff. Your content and presentation is fantastic. Now I'm actually getting into buying books because I truly want to develop my own library. It's just gonna be two bookshelves, but that's a lot for me. I usually just check books out from the library and refrain from purchasing. But I really want my own shelves now. I like your take on human mentality and how it's covered and portrayed in literature. I have great interests in character development in stories. Like actually seeing a character change through their reaction to the simulation, events and circumstances. It's like people watching while understanding why they do what they do....
@alanaestelle2076 I started off just reading to be reading, mostly at work. Since I work overnight I get plenty of opportunity to read. I also never really had a place to store books, but now I do. I use to just visit the library and borrow, borrow, borrow. But now I can buy, keep and trade.
18:55 I read Post Traumatic. Good good book. I consumed the audio book when it came out a few years ago. I would reread it. The title is the book’s theme.
I bought so much stuff that I'm happy to have, but I don't even know where to begin. Got a nice set of Cormac McCarthy's Border Trilogy, but I just gave that to my brother for now. I'm still stuck on A Song of Ice and Fire's final book. It's amazing, but it kind of burned me out trying to burn through the series. I just gotta finish that and read something completely different. I'm set for a while. Only a 1 or 2 books I'd want to track down in 2025.
You can’t go wrong with Marcus Aurelius. Never read Fosse but if I do I’ll start with the one you held up cause it looks super-super short. Wish you hadn’t mentioned TikTok cause I foolishly allowed it on my device and now not only do I hate but I can’t get it off. I know Congress is about to get rid of it but even if they do have a feeling it will keep coming back like cancer. Be well.⚛❤
If you like Nordic literature, I would love to know what you think of Tarjei Vesaas. The Birds is amazing and I don't see it talked that much. There are interviews with Vesaas on YT but only in Norwegian. And ditto to the other comment about a book shelf tour. Thanks for making interesting videos!
Oh, no, the temptation to buy all these books is strong.. I must persevere, the tbr is too long already🙈 Thank you! Especially appreciate that a lot of these books are under the radar
Alana, I found my old, beat up, tattered, dog eared copy of Zhivago and decided to give it a re-read. Letting the book set the pace is a wise choice as it is with most Russian writers. Looking forward to your review. Also, since you like stories involving insanity and who gets to decide who is and who is not insane have you read Ken Kesey's, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest? Well done....Mark.
Committed sounds so interesting! I purchased many books last year and hope to read them this year. I’ll probably stick to purchasing in person. Blackwell’s knows my credit card info too well 😂
I thought it was just me but I also purchase books that all share similar themes. This year I seem to really be focused on reading books with biblical themes like paradise lost and Dante’s inferno. I’ve also been buying books that have a coastal, water setting and books set in Louisiana fishing towns lol
Hi @KJ, Louisiana fishing? Are you talking about Queen Sugar by Natalie Baszile? It's a very well written little story about a single young black lady who tries to start a cane farm in Louisiana, the fishing comes in later with her brother as I recall, pretty good modern novel. Natalie says Oprah made a mini series out of it but I don't own a TV so can't say about that. Enjoy!
Vacation mementos... when I go on vacation, the memento I bring back is a Christmas ornament that is symbolic of where I've been. Once a year when decorating the tree, I get to recall all of the places I've been. For example, I have a banjo ornament (4 inches) from the visit to West Virginia. A Sasquatch ornament from Idaho. A totem pole from Washington state. An eyeball ornament from Salem Witch Museum. A Santa riding a whale from a Boston Whale Watch. An alligator in a Santa hat from a Gator Farm in Florida. A canoe ornament (4 inches) from the visit to the Adirondacks. Santa in a bathing suit, flamingos and palm tree from California. A lizard under a cactus from Arizona, A panda ornament (2 inches) from the visit to San Diego zoo.... etc etc etc
Have to say I am starting to want a Fitzcarraldo Edition of something myself. Though perhaps I should be careful; as they're clearly habit-forming. This year I am also trying to just read what I already have. I may get a book or two or three... but my main goal is to make a serious push on my physical TBR.
I recently bought 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in this Strange World by Elif Shafak, Amatka by Karin Tidbeck and Hunting by Stars by Cherie Demaline. The last one is part of the Marrow Thieves universe and want to continue reading.
So many books I have to check out now! I planned to acquire less books in 2025, but somehow I've already ended up with four. Oops. To be fair, three of them were free! 😆
Ah you're into Norwegian have you read any Knut Hamsun or for someone still alive Karl Knausgaard? (Just making sure you can't possibly run out of things to read 😆😸). Hi Alana, sounds like a good haul! I hope that Rainald Goetz is good, do keep your people posted. I'm retired now, but I spent a good (scratch that-terrible!) chunk of my career as a housing officer in the Self Mutilation Prevention Unit of a maximum security men's prison and I can definitely say that a pretty fair number of the psychs who worked there were crazy as bed bugs! I bet you'll love Boris Pasternak. The problem with heavy duty dyslexia is that you can only read books you can find recorded in audio. It doesn't look like Rombo ever has been, too bad it sounds very cool. Bluets sounds interesting also, ever read Thomas Cahill’s ‘Sailing the Wine Dark Sea' ? Well written little work about the Greeks, but people have made much of the lack of the word “blue”💙 in antiquity, very entertaining read. Thomas Cahill never wrote anything bad. ‘How the Irish Saved Civilization’ was really good too.
