Many U.S. singers could learn that just singing the words and the beautiful melody, with respect and passion, is all that is needed to bring pride and sometimes tears to the eyes of those listening. Every difficult (and ugly) song to sing, but he was more than up to it. (I like how clearly he sang "free" as "fray" so the note could be held (aaay as opposed to eeee); that good vocal training on top of a naturally good voice.

I've never understood WHY anthems are sung before events. I can remember when even at the movies we all had to stand and sing the national anthem before the show would begin. No one has ever explained to me the reason... maybe because no one knows... it's just a custom. In any case, the US national anthem is a BRUTE of a song to sing unaccompanied - very few can sing it well. It's beyond me why it was chosen when the average person can't even sing it.
