I signed a painting I did for my dad last year and immediately felt silly and like a fraud. Imposter syndrome rearing it’s ugly head.😩 I appreciate your message very much and I hope I’ll have the courage to start signing all of my paintings soon.
First time to get this info. Thank you for sharing this. Always something I’ve questioned and have used some of your suggestions. Will add the rest to my decision making.
Becky, I’m just beginning to learn watercolor. At this point I’m copying other artist paintings. I liked my first painting so much that I framed it and placed it in the kitchen. If I copy another artist picture, should I sign it as my own?
Good question. The only way it is okay to sign work that is someone else’s is to make some changes that are significant enough to make it a different painting. I have allowed my students to sign their names to the paintings they do following my demos. Not all teachers allow that. If someone copied one of my pieces that was not a demo and signed their name I would not consider that acceptable at all.
Thank you- I always appreciate your content! I had never thought to use tape to make my signature as straight as possible. I do always sign my paintings, and I date them (just the year), it’s been suggested that I shouldn’t date them too- what are your thoughts about that? It was suggested that I don’t date it because I sell prints and some thought I shouldn’t be selling prints from several years ago . Just wondering your thoughts.
Thank you for your kind words! I personally feel that dating them can put some people off. I have never done any research on the matter though. I do know people who sign and date the back in graphite. If you expect to gain world fame that is a good idea. I don’t bother with that either.
@@thewatercolorclassroom-bec7040 thank you- I appreciate your thoughts. I have started putting the dates on the back of the originals - not with my signatures as often. 😂we just never know about the world fame😉😂!
Do you think it's important to sign your paintings even if you just paint for fun?
