Next up is another Keali'i Reichel favorite, Maunaleo. Keali`i wrote this song for his mother Lei. He compares her to the majestic Mauanleo mountain on the north shore of Maui and how they both guard, comfort, nourish and love the people in their care.

Aloha, beautiful Hawaii. I am not a rich person but have always saved to travel to Maui, my "go to" place, every 3 years or so. No matter what life brought me, I always knew Maui, and its people, were waiting for me. I am devastated. My prayers go out to all who call that paradise home. I feel as though a part of my soul has been ripped away. God bless until we meet again. Pomaikia'i.

I have a dear friend and her young daughter who live in Lahaina. They are safe from the fires, but the school where she teaches (located not far from the landmark Banyan Tree) was destroyed. This beautiful song and dance bring peace and calm to the soul. I know that she loves the music of the islands, and I will share this with her.
A song of resilience and connection. May the spirit of Maui guide her people during this difficult time.

I lived in Hawaii for three years and was so impressed with the spirit of Hawaii. I also loved Israel Kamakawiwo’ole Facing Future Album. There’s just something about the voices and language and emotions that pulled at my heart.
This brings back wonderful memories of a visit to the Big Island years ago. When she picked me up, my dear friend who lives there recommended I immediately tune my rental car's radio to the local All Hawaiian Music All the Time radio station and never turn it off as I drove around the island. I loved it.
My heart goes out to the residents of these irreplaceable islands for their losses. Not only people, flora and fauna, but so many museums and their treasures were lost in these fires.
But I also learned how resilient and accepting they are of what Life and Nature bring. However we ALL must vow to do FAR better in our relationship with our one and only home planet and how we treat Her. Mother Nature always bats last and She Never Loses.
I first heard this song 15 years ago and feel in love! I simply adore hearing Keali’i sing this song. ❤️

My wife and I were fortunate to visit Maui in 2001. We stayed in Wailea but drove around and fell in love with Maui and the people. Keali'i is an excellent singer and musician, as seen in this wonderful video. All of the musicians are wonderful and played so well. I love watching Hawaiian dance and Hula interpretations of this wonderful place. Heal soon, beautiful Maui.

We lived in Hawai’i for 18 years, it was our home. We had an extended Ohana, with calabash cousins, uncles, aunties and friends on nearly every island. Unfortunately, we were priced out of paradise and moved to the mainland. But, as kama’aina, we love Hawai’i and and try to visit when we can. We greave the loss of life and hope the “uhane o Lahaina” (the soul, or spirit of Lahaina) brings healing and renewal. Citing the motto of my alma mater, “Maluna a‘e o na lahui a pau ke ola ke kanaka.” Above all nations is humanity. 🫶🏽🤙🏽
