Short answer is because of the money: by year 3/4 these guys are up for a massive pay day 200 million so you gotta know what you got and you gotta know quick. Also if the QB is being benched for years while his class is making all that money they'll ask for a trade.

    @adamdudley664 4 дня назад +13

There's a lot of factors, but the big ones are:
-Fan expectations and media hype, it used to be normal for rookie qbs to sit for 2-3 years until the veteran starter got too old or moved on, nowadays rookies are seen as the IMMEDIATE solution, rather than a contingency for the future. Fans expect any high draft picks to come in and have immediate impacts, instead of letting them learn.
-Offenses are a lot simpler now, so rookie qbs more often than not don't learn how to actually read a defense. Instead the coordinator will design plays that allow for the qbs progressions to be the exact same no matter what the coverage.
-Rookie qbs that are expected to do well are usually dropped into HORRIBLE situations, because the team they are drafted by had to be bad to get the pick in the first place, players like Bryce and maybe even Caleb in Chicago this season, have to fight for their lives to get the media off their backs, not everyone is a generational talent like Lamar or Mahomes, people need to stop expecting the same from EVERY highly picked QB in the first/second rounds.

Your second point is the case for Bryce, except it's never gonna work. He's literally that. He played in Alabama surround by top tier talent where he didn't have to learn anything. All he had to do was play. The team was set up to win at least 9 games whether Bryce was on the field or not. His style of play was so intriguing at the college level that most non-objective people didn't realize, this dude was reacting to defenses after the snap. Not reading them before the snap. No one realized just how bad his footwork is. So impressed with how he'd improvise and create on the fly, no one realized how weak his arm is. No one realized he's never been accurate over 15 air yards. In fact, Tua and Mack Jones have better deep ball numbers than Bryce in Alabama. It's not so much that Bryce needs developing. He's just not a good QB for the NFL and no matter the team, it's gonna take a while for him to be a competent backup. Carolina didn't ruin him. Alabama did.

I don’t have the knowledge or capability to analyze players on any kind of a deep level, and I understand that I’m basing all this just off the eye test. But that said, Bryce Young was SO DAMN GOOD at Alabama. Like he was insane. He could hit every pass, make accurate throws on the run, make plays with his legs… he absolutely passed the eye test in college. And I get that the NFL is a totally different game but it just doesn’t make sense to me how he could be so good in the SEC, and then so bad in the NFL. I gotta imagine that there’s more factors at play other than that his skills just somehow didn’t translate to the NFL… I dunno. It seems to me like there’s gotta be other factors at play

Everyone wants to win the Super Bowl NOW! They forget that the majority of the greatest quarterbacks were able to sit behind someone! Love sat behind Rodgers, and Rodgers sat behind Farve! Brady sat behind Bledsoe. Hell, Mahomes sat behind ALEX SMITH!
Also, the NFL is negating its realization that coming to the NFL is a step ABOVE college football! Nowadays, the NFL views college football like an athlete factory. The immediate impact of the Mahomes, Burrow, Lamar, and now Purdy or Stroud, have set the standard for rooky QBs to unrealistic levels: win now, right off the gate, because that's what QBs do. And as we have to sign you to 55+ mil/y in 3 years time, we gotta find out right away if you're worth it. Either you are, or you're dumped to the journeymen-backups circuit. Young QBs are aware of this, and embrace it. Some make it, and many struggle. Bryce Young being the worst, as he showed even less than Zach Wilson ever did.

Then came those 2 seasons with Joe Judge and Garrett as an OC at first before moving onto another OC, which was a major disaster before Daboll got there. They didn’t put a team around him nor was there a competitive team. Bad OL and not many great weapons outside of Saquon.
It didn’t help his development what so ever. Nowadays it’s about stability. Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, they still have the same coach. Mahomes more so cuz he has an offensive HC. Lafluer and Love, he’s gonna be there for a while. So stability and environment matter but also GM stability as well.

No . Jones is not a good QB. He can move, which is his only saving point. Choosing him over Barkley is horrible for him. Hopefully Nabers can help save his career. Mitch Trubisky is another one #2 overall but was just a mediocre QB.

Unless he packs on some serious muscle he just has no buisness on that field. His whole deal coming out was he was polished, pro ready, anticipated throws bla bla all the things rookies usually dont have. None of it matters cuz hes to limited in size and strength.

U had 8 opt outs. 👁👁 It’s also was 4 Top players out: Edelman, White, Gunner, Burkhead!

Sam Darnold; Geno Smith; Jarred Goff; Kirk Cousins; Baker Mayfield; Justin Fields; Malik Willis; Tua Tagaviola Were completely written off as busts at one point in time in their career, but have shown flashes within the past 2 seasons as being damn good. It just shows how coordinators and lack of surrounding players can ruin a QB’s confidence or give a false perception that they can’t play in the NFL. Bryce Young in SF, K.C. Or L.A.(Rams) would look totally different. Remember when Sam Darnold was quoted as saying “I’m seeing 👻 Ghost’s on the field” when he was not looking too good with the Jets? Now he’s an MVP candidate and undefeated.

I'm convinced everybody who says Peyton Manning had a bad rookie year, wasn't watching football around that time. The Colts were absolute misery offensively before Peyton, and although Peyton threw 28 picks, it was OBVIOUS this dude was an actual legit quarterback. They actually had an offense with him behind center. People were very, very happy with his rookie year in Indy. I understand 28 picks is a lot today, but back then, if you were slinging it, as long as you had a lot of good, people put up with more bad.

Imo what it comes down to is being able to balance internal vs external culture. Some teams are good at ignoring external pressure and some are not.
Remember when the 49ers kept Garappalo despite the media saying all summer that they couldn't? Pepperidge farms remembers. They kepy him and were contenders that year depsite an unexpected QB injury.
Packers same deal, Patriots all the time when Brady was still there. Gruden with the Raiders suffered from incredibly bad luck with Ruggs and also with Khalil leaving, but overall teams that dobthings their own way rather than always worrying about ESPN, tend to do better than those that don't.

  • @micahorr2077

People forget at the end of 2022, the panthers were playing good football. At 7-10, we were running the ball at will, in turn sam darnold was able to have some easy throws. Defense was playing well, because the offense was effecient, time comsuming. So the defense was able to rest, and play rested. Steve wilks did a great job and should have been the panthers next head coach. We let mccaffrey go, dj moore, draft picks. Terrible culture from the owner down. Bryce came into a terrible situation, granted he didnt play well. But he came into a bad situation because the ownership destroyed the the team, ans culture that was developed that wilks was building in 2022. Those players were playing for him.

This is entirely about money I think. Owners and GM's taking "MVP" a little too literally and now average qbs are getting market resetting contracts based on "potential". The Giants kind of did the develop and wait and see thing with Daniel Jones and it's kind of blown up in their face since his contract year. Prior to the changing in rookie contracts, a first round pick was still getting paid a competitive wage for top performers at their position regularly. You don't get better paying an extra 45 million a year to a guy you already had and teams just don't see the time to develop a guy any more. I'm not sure what the easy fix would be because some of those things have been important to other positions.
