SliceofOtaku My own theory is that Rose used her bubble to protect herself and the Crystal Gems while projecting her shield to block the attack from obliterating the Temple, as shown by the shape of the beach around the Temple. However, this backfired against the Crystal Gems.
In Ocean Gem, when Lapis' Steven Clone throws a pressurized water bubble at Steven, he blocks it with the shield and the *soundwave* produced is amplified and destroys the water clones. I believe that this may have happened - the Diamonds know whatever they throw at Rose can simply be shielded, so they send a powerful and lethal attack that when shielded off, would be amplified and spread throughout Earth, thereby corrupting All other Gems left on the planet.
I think it would be like those solar eclipse glasses. They would see is but not be affected by it. For example if you look at a solar eclipse without special glasses you can become permanent blind. But, with the glasses you won't. I think it was the rose bubble that protected the group.

Something I realized that in "The Return" Greg said that if it weren't for her shield maybe there would be no non-corrupted gems on earth, also adds that she could only save a couple of her closest friends. What I didn't realize at the time was that Greg meant this literally, Rose could only Save those closest to her in the form of location, imagine dealing with the guilt and pain knowing if maybe you had tried harder or made your shield just a little bit larger, you could have saved more of your friends from a twisted fate. No wonder Rose didn't like to talk about her past, and that's not even taking into account the whole "Rose shattered Pink Diamond" incident

Well yea I agree on this idea but we have to know that homeroom is VERY planned out. If White Diamond is the leader and played a huge part in creating homeworld then she must have known the diamonds could do this. White Diamond must have planned out Yellow, Blue, and Pink Diamond for homeworlds ruling. She made 4 diamonds to complete the song she had planned to make and to rule homeworld. For all we known the corruption song on earth was a first time thing. With Pink being shattered the song is incomplete and a cure is a possibility.

The Corruption Nuke was a final FU to Rose Quartz, and it seemed to have been pretty successful: if it corrupted all Gems still on Earth, well and good; if Rose's shield (which I think is actually her bubble) protected her and at best a few others, she would be forced to see her friends and allies turn into monstrous organic caricatures, with no way of helping them. In either case, Rose would be finally dealt with when the broken shards of her followers hatched into The Cluster to destroy her precious Earth, yet another piece of delicious irony from Yellow Diamond's viewpoint.
The Diamonds never intended to return to re-colonize this planet after the Corruption Nuke, because of the fear that this seductive, organic-rich world would inevitably tempt Gems into rebelling against the Order of the Diamonds; and The Cluster would have erased the last hope of any Gem with contrary thoughts.

My theory is that building Earth into a colony was pinks idea, but after learning about it's how firtile the Earth was for making gems, Yellow Diamond wanted to take it for her self. Being a very cold hearted gem I believe she may have experimented on troops that she shattered herself, figured out how to use them as gem weapons and found that the Earth would provide the best development for the cluster weapon.
There are 2 reasons I can think of for the existence of the cluster its self. 1 is that Yellow needs a weapon that's stronger than her to take out an opponent stronger than her. The only one that comes to mind would be White diamond. The other is that in the heart of the cluster is the shards of pink diamond fused in there as a way to hide Yellows crime or shattering Pink diamond

Maybe the corruption song takes a lot of energy / gem life force or has other severe consequences and that's why they only used it as a last resort after pink diamond was shattered? Would also explain why they didn't do anything to earth right after it happened but rather left it and came back after thousands of years.
I would have instantly fused with the other diamonds and shattered every last crystal gem left and cut earth into the shape of pink diamond cause death to all I guess
If was a diamond (y'know a competition one): I'll try to have pink diamond off world to homeworld during the rebellion, despite how powerful a diamond is. I wouldn't risk an important figure within the empire in the middle of a rebellion. I then would target and destroy human cities and villages or hold them hostages, to mess with rose quartz and possibly force human soldiers to surrender. I'll order my army to not bubble, but shatter every single rebel. Then send my best soldiers to go and try to shatter rose quartz and openly release this info to the public especially to the rebels. With pink diamond secured and the rebellion's figure and chain of command destroyed, I'll mow the rest down with my superior ships and numbers afterwards I will order to snuff out anymore gems. Then push humanity to extinction or slavery and finally create earth into the perfect colony it should have been. You know this doesn't seem kid friendly, then again this was a war.

What if the corruption song is basically a nuke, in that it irradiates the earth in a way? Maybe any gems coming out of the ground would come out corrupted or otherwise faulty, so the diamonds pulled back. This would mean the scouting missions were not only to check on the cluster, but to see if earth had cleared yet

If I was a diamond, I would be nicer. I WOULD still conquer enemies, but ONLY enemies. I would make allies, I wouldn't have slaves, and there would be equal opportunities for every gem. I would also support cross gem fusions, as well as not distance off colours.
Question: Since Steven is part human, and thus growing into his form instead of changing it as Amethyst did, would he be susceptible to the "diamond attack" like other gems or be seemingly immune as the humans of those extremely early years were?

I have a new theory about the cluster. So as we know gems form in the ground and then pop out with a body sized hole left behind. And we know there is a giant hole in what would be russia. And we know the diamonds are incredibly powerful. My theory is that the cluster is a attempt by the diamonds to make a new/bring back pink diamond. The reason I think this is because when a strong gem (for example jasper) pops out of the ground they leave a large and deep hole. So when a diamond pops out if the ground they probably leave behind a pretty big hole, like the one in russia. And before anyone says " but peridot said the cluster hatching would destroy the world" think about this. How did peridot get that answer. As far as we know this is the first cluster. How do we know peridot just estimated that answer based on probability. But there is problem with this. We don't know the full extent of gem technology. We don't how advanced it is or how most of it works.
Homeworld should have used the corruption sing well the rebellion was small. Or maybe the Corruption was a test to see what would happen and if they can study the effects. Awesome video

If I were the diamonds, I'd send a team of gems specifically with the order to collect and study the various corrupted gems. Peridot once said that they "don't have anything like this on home world", so you'd think that along side the fusion experiments, learning more about the science behind gem corruption would be very useful. This kills two birds with one stone when you can confirm the identities of which gems have been shattered or corrupted, meaning you could possibly deduce who's still alive by learning which gems are missing.
It's pretty apparent the gems find the corruption to be gross/horrific/twisted. It's possible the tactical advantage of using it after Pink Diamond was killed would be as a terrorizing attack, a sort of a final nuking of the rebellion, or a revenge against Pink Diamond's supposed killer. Basically if they consider being corrupted as worse than being shattered, and with no diamond left who actually wanted to colonize the planet where Pink died, it would be a pretty brutal finale to a failed campaign. That would also explain why they wouldn't use it earlier in the rebellion despite the fact that it could totally destroy the rebellion, it's too twisted for standard warfare, ie mustard gas

You have inspired me to update my theory.
For a while I have had the theory that corruption was not the intent of the Diamond Attack. What if the Diamonds were planning an attack that was a fusion of all four Diamonds? Peridot was very surprised to find any Crystal Gems still on Earth, and even had to ask if humans were still the dominant species (or at least if they had been replaced by "Stevens"). Until "The Trial" I suspected that Rose shatered Pink to prevent an annihilating Diamond Fusion attack, but the remaining Diamonds attempted it anyhow, and the result was corruption instead of annihilation. However, if Rose didn't shatter Pink, that would not have been her motive.
This leads me to a lesson from Earth history. Back during the Cold War, the US and the USSR had an understanding called MAD or Mutually Assured Destruction. We wouldn't nuke them, because they would nuke us back and visa versa. Joseph Stalin, however, did consider making a nuclear strike against the US. A member of the KGB learned of his plan, and poisoned the leader to prevent the attack. (He was later discovered and executed)
What if a homeworld gem discovered that the Diamonds were going to use an annihilation attack, did not want that massive loss of life, and shattered Pink Diamond to try to stop it?!

I agree with everything but i also think that since Steven was so close to fixing a corrupted gem that rose quarts was also so close but unable to, and rose is part of PD court, so what if PD, + WD, BD, and YD make a fusion that can cure the corruption? Just a thought

Since the song is missing a diamond, I think it was a song to completely shatter a gem but without one diamond, being pink diamond, it cannot shatter a gem, but only corrupt, as garnet explained to Steven, "corruption is like a tear of the mind" we could sort of also explain it as the mind being shattered instead of the entire gem, just my thought
if i was a dimond i would have used corruption as soon as i heard of the rebbelion and if i was in the present day and was in the judge hall i would have realized steven wasnt rose quartz

I don't think the light/song attack was meant to corrupt, but that was the result anyway. And when the Earth was scanned for gems, the gemstones was still there. It didn't show they was corrupted. The Diamonds just left Earth as a loss, with the contingency plan of destroying them later with the cluster.

I like to believe that the diamonds only didn't use the "Corruption Song/Light" because they believed, like most other n our history, that the war would be over quickly But as morale declined and mores hems shattered, they realized how hopeless the war was...
I think if I were a Diamond, I'd have looked into the question of how to colonize without destroying the planet. Didn't Peridot mention something like that in Message Received? If I as a Diamond can figure out how to deal with the issues that would spark a Rebellion before said Rebellion starts, then would any of these complications arise?

maybe rhodonite's use of the word "decimated" is important? to decimate is technically to ravage a city and a population until only 10% of it (deci) remains, or something like that. maybe the gist is they knew there was a crystal gem population but not that it would be able to mount an attack before the cluster popped
what if the two sticks "Pink Diamond" was holding in Garnetts flasback are tools used to corrupt gems just like how a stabilzer is used to disrupt a gems physical form. Maybe thats why Rose needed to "shatter" her.
Consider this. The Corruption Light might be the same as a Nuke. Perhaps there was a period of time after the Song was used where the Earth was considered unviable for Gem life due to either possible corrupting influence still about, or the sheer number of Corrupted Gems that might still be considered a threat. Perhaps there was an understanding that Corruption from these Gems might have been contagious? We saw what happened to Jasper, even though that was from her fusing with a corrupted Gem. I mean, a lot of the larger Corrupted Gems would wipe out lesser Gems, it's only due to the Crystal Gems working as a unit that they generally can take care of these pour souls.
Also, we have yet to see what White Diamond's role was in all of this. Until I've seen the third Diamond and gauged her personality, I'll wait and see before placing any bets on things one way or another

Now that I think about my general behavior is like Yellow Diamond, so nothing would have changed.
Except attempting to shatter Peridot, I'd be calmer. Mellow Diamond.
If I were a past diamond, I would have the thought that pink could hold her own planet(s). After she would be "shattered" I would suggest a thorough search on earth for understanding of the shattering. If there is no true purpose, then I would summon the corruption card after evacuating all the loyal gems. I would make one final search to be sure. After the "song" I would send a few troops back to finish off any survivors

These are good questions. One possibility is that, at that moment in time the Homeworld Gems were fleeing from something that they feared that could only be stopped by the attack. I have suspicions that there's something about the Earth that poses a unique problem for gem kind. I don't know what exactly but it would explain the Diamond's scorched earth retreat without returning. In Message Received Peridot said, "The organic ecosystem creates resources unique to this world, we can't sacrifice all that potential just for one geo-weapon!", implying that the Earth is not like other gem-controlled worlds. Perhaps the Diamond's learned that that uniqueness presents a much bigger threat than an opportunity.
Another possibility hinges on the question, just why does Yellow diamond want a planet sized weapon? The only reason to sacrifice the Earth's resources in favor of it (which based on the total count of Gem colonies and the comments about Homeworld's dwindling resources constitutes a huge economic sacrifice) is that they thought they needed it to attack or defend against something comparable in power. The Manhattan Project was ruinously costly. The US was borrowing up to it's eyeballs to fund the war and it wouldn't have diverted that much funding to develop nuclear weapons but for the fear that somebody else was on the verge of having that weapon too. What served that role in the Diamond's motivation to waste the Earth to get the Cluster? What did they know about that was big enough? The theory here is that some immanent threat existed beyond the Crystal Gem rebellion and that's why they fled in panic and never returned.
Another possibility is that there's something gone horribly wrong with the Gem Empire. Behind the bluster it's hollow and that the reason they didn't return to earth is that they didn't have the strength. Something's drained it away. They don't have the forces. They have some new extremely advanced tech and some very powerful agents like Jasper and Aquamarine and enough Rubies for a squad, and they use them to pretend they're the same irresistible force they were in the past, but it's a shell.
Ask yourself, "Where were was the audience for the Trial of the Millennia of the traitor Rose Quartz?" Why weren't hundreds of loyal Homeworld Elite's in attendance, scowling at the traitor and murmuring for justice? Homeworld is talking but it isn't acting like a huge empire.
First, homeworld gems most probably consider humans as harmless animals, making "decimated" correct as it refers only to gemkind (aside from the whole Rose shied thing they didn't know about.It's quite possible that there are reasons, like needing to gather all diamond in one place, or Homeworld's culture that make Diamonds avoid using corruption, unless all else fails. In my opinion it goes like that: Earth - good planet for colony -> Pink's colonization -> Rose's rebellion -> Pink's death -> Cluster in crust
-> Rose's rebellion gains upper hand on Earth's surface -> corruption beam. Some things to remember is that I'm pretty much sure that Gems never had to deal with rebellion before, so they didn't know how to react in the beginning. Also, I belive that Diamonds orginally planned to keep Cluster a secret and keep on fighting, if only to put Rose on trail. as a means to show what happens to Gems that try to defy them. Instead, something foced them to retreat. Maybe some major victory on Rose's side. Though it's worth noticing that gems don't seem to need much resources to sustain themself, don't seem to grow old, but are dealing with a shortage. That begs a question: "What is draining Homeworld resources?". This has many possible explanations, but seems to boil down to one problem: their numbers are dropping and they can't keep up with creating new gems. With is worth another theory of it's own.

When did they establish that Gem Corruption was inflicted by a song? I thought Centipeedle said it was a flash of light.
If I was a diamond fighting the Crystal Gems I would focus on making new technology that would seek out and destroy gems like those scanners in the episode off colours. But manely try to make scanners that would specificity find Rose Quartz.
I'm stuck on the idea now that yellow diamond already knew Earth had insufficient minerals for "proper" gem subordinates, so when pink demanded a planet of her own, yellow let her have Earth, knowing she would never desire it herself (and no harm done if she didn't successfully conquer it). Thus when pink was shattered, it was more of a revenge war on the crystal gems with no intent to salvage earth, and the corruption song and eventual cluster were made to make life for the rebel gems as inconvenient as possible.
