    Well said Michael. We are still waiting for Universal Canada to give us the go ahead up here re: Revolver pre-orders. Your musical backgound serves you well here and your examination of Taxman and Revolver is in sync with my own thoughts. Finally, thanks for the over the top gracious shout out. I'll return the favor in my next "old timey" upload. I am really grateful. I was telling Sue I noticed another sub surge over on my channel and it is clearly members of your "tribe" making their way towards me - I am happy n' proud to be a member of that select group of Michael Noland "tribal members" as well. Michael I listened to it yesterday and honestly it was like in "The Wizard of Oz" going from black & white to color. This new technology is incredible and the possibilities are endless, not just all of the early Beatles but everything from all things early Rock & Roll. Just based on Taxman it seems to me we are witnessing the Big Bang of re-visiting the entire universe of old school recordings. My mind is blown.

      Yes! And he added so much to the sound of the albums. For instance, in Revolver George added not only vocals, also indian instruments, backwards guitars, he influence a lot on John and Paul in their way of use indian elements in their songs. For me this is inmeasurable. The india factor is much more than the 4 or 5 songs of george with indian style throughout the beatles career.

    Mike, I accidentally found a vintage Beatles Revolver in Mono, 1st pressing on the Parlophone (UK) label in my local vintage vinyl store, paid a pretty penny for it ($120) and I friggin’ love the pure fidelity of it. I don’t mind paying the price for a first pressing, getting to hear it as they originally recorded and mixed it for the first audience…
    Anyway, I’ve heard the 2012 and 2014 mono reissues, and the original sounds superior…

    Hi Michael. Amazing channel! I dug out my 1966 OG UK stereo pressing of Revolver: I listened to Taxman and then listened to the 2022 remix. You’re right: the sizzle and stereo impact of Paul’s lead guitar riffs is missing from the remix. It’s very bass heavy and centric. Their vocals hover over the instrumentation. Some of the excitement is lost in this 2022 remix. We all know the band didn’t take the stereo mixes seriously. But the modernization “remix” of the Beatles albums continues to confuse me: Who is the intended audience for these reissues? How many more Beatles remixes can be made? 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @67Pepper
      @67Pepper 2 года назад +4

      All of the remasters Giles has been involved with were bass heavy. I generally like the balance of the music being distributed better over 2 channels, rather than a hard left, hard right panning but the over blown bass frequencies kill the rythm and pace of the music.

    • @Rockstaralan
      @Rockstaralan 2 года назад +8

      Okay, no disrespect. But like many others, you seem to have the terms "mix" and "master"/"remaster" confused. In other words, what you're referring to happens to be the 2009 REMASTER of the original stereo mix that has existed since 1966, not "the 2009 mix". There never was a remix done in '09. As we do know, however, not only were stereo remixes done for the 1987 CD releases "Help!" and "Rubber Soul", but those particular remixes were also, unfortunately, carried over to the 2009 CD remasters of same. But the actual stereo MIX of "Revolver" itself has remained completely untouched or unaltered since it originally appeared - that is, of course up to now. Hope that helps to clarify things. Otherwise, I couldn't agree more that this new mix of "Taxman" absolutely SMOKES the original in every way we expected and hoped it would. And lest I state the obvious, I too am looking immensely forward to hearing the rest of this when it finally drops toward the end of next month!

    Its funny how we hear things differently. There are some anomolies with this new remix.
    Im guessing due to the demixing AI.
    The guitar solo is rather chewed up from the separation of the tamborine.
    Cymbals are phasey sounding with a swoosh in the trails. Compare the og stereo side by side.
    They took out the guitar hum at the first taking away a bit of the character from the songs beginning. Georges voice is quiter now. May be centered but it isnt as clear at all imo.
    The entire overall remix sounds narrowed in a way that feels piled up now more so and doesnt breath. Went too far with the narrowing imo.
    The remix has its pluses, but too many minuses imo. At least on this track anyway.
    What is your general opinion of the demixing process?

    I think rubber soul is the strongest record of theirs because it’s the most introspective up to that point. The Beatles are kind of unique because they did everything completely backwards. Most bands start these days start out a little more progressive and then they wind up going pop. The Beatles started out as a pop band but then went super progressive. Also they started out writing songs for everybody else pretty much just playing the stuff that people wanted to hear all the songs about love and everything else but then later on they started writing stuff for themselves. Most bands start writing for themselves and then try to write for their fans. I just think there’s something incredible about the Beatles in the sense that they were able to take all these different sounds that everyone was familiar with and put their own spin on it and take it to a whole other place. but I think what makes the Beatles stand out the most is what they were actually saying. A lot of their songs although push the envelope at the time they still packaged themselves in a very accessible way but the things they were saying in their lyrics were completely next level and still quite compelling. I don’t think there will ever be another band like them because I just don’t think the conditions are right for another one to arise. I love your channel and I envy you for being around when all the stuff was fresh and new. I will tell you this I have always liked Led Zeppelin but you make me really want to dive deep into their stuff like I have the Beatles. I also heard you say you love queen and I really do think they’re probably one of the best bands ever! Keep doing what you’re doing we love your insight and are proud to be part of the tribe!

    Hey Michael - i've been REALLY looking forward to your comments on "Taxman" !! I knew you were going to review it. I'm also an audio engineer, & have very strong feelings about The Beatles original mono & stereo mixes. Unfortunately the original stereo mix of "Revolver" is not great - i'd much rather the mono. In fact, the best sounding original stereo album (before Pepper) is "Beatles For Sale" IMO.
    Now, back to "Taxman". This is an improvement on the original stereo, but it's not really great either. But then again, they did not have a lot to work with - even with new source separation software. It's a rockin' song, & on the mono it does rock. The thing to note here is John Lennon did not play anything on this song, so we only have George's guitar all the way thru. We do have Paul playing the solos & the little lead licks that come in 2 thirds of the way thru, but if John had played guitar, we could've had a great stereo mix like "Day Tripper" or "I Feel Fine" - with guitars panned left & right all the way thru.
    My main problem with this new mix is George's rhythm guitar. They should've put a delay on it & panned that left. That way we get the effect of 2 guitars. And that would've given the song more PUNCH ! With that, all of Paul's guitar parts could stay in the centre.

      You know tiger, your suggestion regarding George’s guitar is excellent!
      I mentioned in the video his guitar ‘on the right’ , but I meant to bring out that it ‘travels’ the stereo spectrum!

    I'm glad someone else caught the disappearance of that bass rumble in the intro -- I noticed it right away and agree it's preferable in the older version. I also miss some of the clarity to the guitars when they were off in the right ear by themselves.
    However, I will say the drums are *much* clearer in this mix. I imagine that will be the case for the rest of the album's new mix, as the old Revolver stereo mix had a strangely processed drum sound throughout. I didn't mind that sound, but I bet the songs will come even more alive with brighter drums.

    I’ve listened about a half dozen times, and largely agree with your observations. Where I disagree: I miss the loudness of the tambourine and cowbell. But I can live with that.
    Regarding your graphic that Paul should have stuck with his Rick: there’s no doubt, Rickenbacker basses are magnificent. They are also heavy as hell. I own a Hofner; it’s the lightest of any of my other string instruments, not including my ukuleles. Which would you rather wear for most of a 2 ½ hour show?

  • @artnanne

    Wow, hold your horses! “Paul recorded the solo backwards “? This is the first mentioning I have ever heard of that. I know George transcribed and recorded the solo for “I’m only sleeping” backwards (which you can clearly hear) but the solo on “Taxman” was surely recorded “straight”. It’s not that hard to play once you’ve learnt it. I think there may be a mixup of the two solos?

  • @andercert70
    @andercert70 2 года назад +3

    It's really odd. Clearly the tambourine and cowbell are too loud in the original stereo mix. But I found them too quiet in the new mix. I'm so used to hearing them prominently that I wanted just a bit more of them. I do love that one's in the left and the other is in the right because almost everything seems to be centered. I certainly would NOT put bass and guitar hard left and right, but I'd probably have separated them a bit more in the stereo field. (Sidenote: Have you seen the drawings of the stereo field for the mixes on his Press to Play album? They're really fun).
    There is a low tone at the outset of the original mix, I'd certainly would think it's the bass guitar ringing, and was probably on the track with the cough. As you say, we'd all probably choose to take it out if we were doing the mix, but I have to agree I like it better with it there, probably from listening to it for 40 years that way.
    Just to nitpick... Unless what I've read on it is wrong, I'm pretty sure they still only had 8 tracks on Abbey Road. :P
    Nice breakdown of the new mix. Thanks.

Up until I think Abbey Road, stereo versions were done later by a very artificial mix which is why they sound like crap. Beatles 62-66 She Loves You is mono and is the worst sounding song on the newest release which sounds great otherwise. That's a snarly overdriven snaky animal, that solo. Interesting how George's interest in Indian music rubbed off on the versatile and keen eared musician Paul McCartney. I would love to know if he winged it in one take or if it was pre composed. Something about it sounds immediate and spontaneous - it's so damn inspired - yet off the top of my head I think it must be just about the most complex guitar solo the Beatles had recorded up to this time.
    Another snippet that makes me think how the Eastern music thing affected Paul is his vocal antics at the end of I Want To Tell You. It is pure India. Interestingly, Paul used this same Classical Indian vocal phrasing during a 1966 live version of If I Needed Someone during the "ahhhh..." harmonies in George's guitar solo. He seemed really fond of it.
    The thing about comparing some of the albums stereo and mono mixes: The Beatles were amazing at creating texture. It's why even some of their earliest songs sound so DENSE - like there's more going on than there really is - more than four instruments. Very full sounding. Ticket To Ride is pure texture. We are not galvanised by instrumental virtuosity when we hear it - we are dreamily immersed in gorgeous texture. The problem with a lot of the stereo mixes is that, instead of a beautiful oil painting kind of experience, where everything blends in beautiful cohesive layers of sound, we have vocals and cowbells and tambourines suddenly jumping out at us from odd places in the room. It's a jarring experience and it's distracting. George Martin himself recommended listening to the mono version of Pepper rather than the stereo. "It has finer brush strokes."
    In my mind it's like taking the Mona Lisa and going "how can we make this better - more three dimensional. Hmmm....I know...let's cut around the outline of the woman and bring it forward a few inches from the background. Do the same with the trees. There we go." FAIL. Instead of a composition of great harmony and balance and beauty, well, you've messed it all up. That's what happens when you don't mix tracks with a discerning ear. I was taping and mixing my stuff on an old Fostex 244 four track cassette recorder back in the late '80s when I could buy a Moog Rogue or WEM Copycat for forty quid, but primitive (by todays standard) recording gear cost an arm and a leg. It takes great care and even a measure of happy accidental luck to get things to sound good when you're bouncing tracks on a four track machine. The engineers back in the 60's did what they thought was right in creating such an extreme stereo image. I get the impression that the stereo imaging was done in a rush and kind of an afterthought. Stereo hi fi was not in every household, mono was still the industry standard. It was maybe even thought of as a gimmick?? It's true potential far from realised. I guess nobody took the time to check it through headphones either. Sheez - listening to early Beatles albums through headphones is NOT a great musical experience.
    Anyway, we can all look forward to new remixes of the Beatles wonderful catalogue. Mono and stereo. As long as it's done with ears that know.
